Estate Sale find. Vintage Hand Made in Sweden Small Hand Axe Hatchet approx. 10 1/2" long and still in great condition. This has a hardwood handle(looks like Oak) that has been hand carved with finger grips. And a little checkering on the back side of the handle. I do not know what the black tape was all about, I took it off to make sure that the handle was not cracked, or split, and it was not. And the elderly gentleman that I purchased it from said it was his fathers, and he did not know anything about it, other than he had it a long time stored with some camping stuff. Antique Primitive Axe Hatchet Hammer Wood Handle Hand Cast Forged Iron
Description PRIMITIVE HATCHET HAMMER Offered for bids is a primitive antique hatchet/axe with hammer end and nail puller. Part of an estate with antique farm tools. Head appears to be hand wrought cast iron. Approximately 6" long and 2 1/4" wide at widest point of blade. Nice shape with rounded nail pulling cutout at base of blade end. The hammer end is not perfectly round. Instead it is made up of eight flattened sections. Hatchet has its original wood handle which is gently curved for a comfortable grip and is approximately 11 1/8" long. There is no maker's mark. Unsure of age, I estimate this is from the early 1900's. A Very Nice Primitive Carpentry Tool CONDITION: There are visible signs of wear. Including light surface corrosion. Hammer end has indentations, nicks and gouges. One side of blade has an V shaped cut ... moreinto surface. Head is loose and wobbles, though is still attached to blade. There are four nails driven into head end of handle(please see image) I don't know if this is what is keeping the head on or not. Blade has an edge, but there are small nicks and it is dull. Handle has a chip at bottom and some chipping/rough spots near head. Handle is still intact, functional and solid. There are scattered spots of paint on handle as well as some on blade. There are two holes on one side of handle. These are"clean" and look to be intentionally made, but do not go all the way through to the other side. I don't know what their purpose is. I have been asked many many times to sell just a handle, so what Im throwing up here is a fully finished, fully custom all hand made hardwood handle that will need to be cut to fit Your axe head, or hatchet head or hammer head or what ever you may want to mount on her, you could use this for many different things, beer tap handle?This handle is approx 13 inches long and just a really nice piece that should make for an awesome addition to what ever you are going to mount on her.What I did was made the whole handle just like my regular customs but have left the top part uncut so you can shape it to fit what ever size the eye is you are working with, Ive left plenty of meat for you to work with, and if you notice I left the top edge square so you will have a good point to start from and be able to lay down some reference ... morelines( much easier to work with something square than round when you are first starting off and trying to make sure everything lines up well)The handle is made out of one piece of solid really beautiful Gunstock Quality Black Walnut that has some nice grain.I sanded the handle silky smooth and used several coats of boiled linseed oil for the final finish, so after you carve the shape for the head to fit you will only have to oil the raw wood in order to make it blend with the rest of the already finished wood on the rest of the handle.I also added some inlaid exotic Wenge wood plugs for added detail.Make sure to measure the eye of what ever head you want to mount and make sure it will work with this piece. Section of wood handle remains in center hole. This is a RARE and INITIALED Double-Bit Axe from an early settler-family to the Denver region. This massive axe head has a pleasing. Brown patina and a somewhat smooth face. It clearly has not been sharpened too-much over its lifetime. The form/shape of this double-bit is extraordinary. It is exceedingly well proportioned and equally balanced with a proper handle. As can be seen from the photographs. An easily-removed section of the former handle is still lodged in the axe-head opening. Examining the blade carefully. ... moreOne sees the cap-letters that appear to be: A V C.the"V C are a bit easier to identify, but look closely. In the 19th century, blacksmiths typically pounded their initials into the flat-area of a double-bit, but MANY of those artifacts were QUICKLY snapped up and put into collections. This one is still available. So whoever AVC was, today we recognize his master-craftsmanship! Axe has a brown patina. Surface region maintains a few minor dimples. African Congo Songye Axe with Hand Forged Blade and Copper Plated Handle
These axes were carried by the Songye tribal people of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa circa 1880 to 1920. These were quite capable of being used for personal defense. However the primary use was not as a weapon but as status symbols of standing, prestige, occupation or affiliation. This is an excellent example with a hand forged axe head and copper cladded wooden handle with very intricate hand tooling. The steel shows rust and light pitting commensurate with age. The copper cladding has a nice even patina. This makes a great display or collector piece due to it's compact size and light weight. The handle is solid with no cracks or chips and the head is secured to it tightly. The stamp is good and it's marked 3 2 on the reverse.
