Here is a wonderful. Early foundry made(very faint makers mark that I cannot make out) Indian Trade ax. Used by mountain men and others as a trade idem with western Indians tribes. Head is about 3 5/8" x 8" pitted. Dates to the mid-1700s. Heads like this were sold and traded for at Bents Fort and other sites and carried into the Rockies for trade. No markings. The bit has been given a wicked sharp edge good enough to slice paper or whatever else you see fit to chop! The handle is a seasoned vintage Ash. It's been naturally coloured and treated with Teak Oil and Beeswax for a silky smooth and sure grip, fixed with a wooden and a steel wedge. The sheath is a thick tooling hide leather with rivets and brushed popper. Coloured and treated to aid waterproofing, and can be looped onto a belt. Vintage Large Hand Made Axe Head with Lion Stamp, Welded, from Wales
Here is a vintage. Large, hand made Axe Head with a Lion Stamped on it. The lion is holding an axe. It has been welded together from what appears to be several different pieces and the weld seams can be seen in the photos. That is typical. The cutting edge seems to be steel and the rest is iron. I bought it at a town fair in a small village in Wales. The round stamp of the lion is the size of a quarter. It weighs 3 1/4 pounds and is a little over 8" in length. The person I bought it from did not know its origin except that it was old. I could have guessed that. I really know nothing about it. If anyone has any information on the stamp I would appreciate knowing about it. I prefer Paypal. Thanks for looking.
