Antique Hand Axe / Trade Axe Original Hickory Haft Very Early Hand Axe
Here is a very interesting antique hand axe. Or hatchet, obviously blacksmith made and decorated or marked with diagonal lines hammered into each side of the axw head. The head measured from the haft hole is approx. 4.25" in lengthwith the face of the head measuring approx. 2.5" The overall length of the haft is 17" The haft is made, I believe, of hickory, and has a slightly backwards curve that enhances balance. The haft has been with the axe head a very long time, long enough for the wood to have shrunk and left the head slightly loose at the head. Several iron wedges have been hammered into the head of the haft over the years to tighten the fit, and a later attempt to tighten the fit involved a nail which is visible extending out the lower haft hole. There are four small tacks around the base of the haft which at one time ... moremay have held a leather cover in place or they may have been merely ornamental. Whatever their purpose, they have been there for a very long time. The axe head is similiar in form to one illustrated by Neumann on page 25. Row 3, third from left( Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution ISBN:0-9605666-8-6) Which would bolster the possibility that this axe head, and possibly even the haft, dates from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries. I found several pieces that are tools or spear points made from petrified wood and the axe is the largest petrified wood artifact I found. This antique hand axe has been examined by two different blacksmiths who specialize in recreating 18 century items and has been determined to most likely be English in origin. They also said that it was made with a hammer poll that was period removed to make the axe a more effective weapon. The metal has moderate to light pitting consistent with it's age and usage and the handle though not the original has age to it with some cracks running from the butt toward the head, see pics. In over 21 years of buying and examining period antique weapons I have not seen a better example of an axe being used as a weapon. Please look at the pictures and ask all questions before bidding. ANTIQUE VTG PROSPECTING COAL SILVER GOLD MINERS MINING ROCK HAND TOOL PICK AXE
What a wonderful piece of Americana this is. It is a very old prospectors pick that would have been used in a coal. Gold or silver mine. I think the handle is original and has a very nice grain. The handle had a piece of tape around it when I got it and that explains the lighter ring around the handle. There is no damage where the tape was though. One tip of the pick is vertical and the other is horizontal. It is a 2 pound head(stamped, see pic 4) This item is so good and so tight I would not be afraid to use it right now but of course that would be highly irresponsible as historic items like this deserve preservation. Pick is 29" long.

French and Indian wars is a huge passion of mine as a kid I was( I still am) very interested and passionate about this war and love Sir William Johnson. When I started to collect I wanted to find anything to do with him. I bought this Axe from my Friend collector and antiques dealer Bill Guthman and he told me this came from the collection of Sir William Johnson museum house NY Mohawk Valley.and it was before that found a lake George! He gave me no papers or prof but he was able to buy this collections when museums had to sell things to buy other things and I bought many items from him and trusted him very much. Quite beautiful hatchet fantastic patina and wear. see the pics! 2 markings I can't read the armorer's maker mark.one letter looks like a R and a Rune ... morelike marking P.very interesting! 7 1/5" long from poll to leading edge leading edge to heel is 5" 3lb I'd guess 18th c antiques and history are my passion.
