The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity by Carsten Peter Thiede. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 256 pages. Publisher: Palgrave ... morefor St. Martin’s Press; 2001) Carsten Peter Thiede’s bestseller. Eyewitness to Jesus” written with journalist Matthew d’Ancona, established him as one of the leading figures on the history and texts of the first century. Now in this controversial new book, Thiede focuses on what are perhaps the most enigmatic ancient documents ever found; the Dead Sea Scrolls. Drawing upon his own pioneering methods in restoring the scrolls, Thiede reveals that the Essene Library represented by the scrolls demonstrates that the first Christians were essentially a Jewish movement, not a radically new and fundamentally different religion. This perspective clearly has major implications. It affects both how we view the scrolls and it changes how we consider the history of first-century Christianity. Unraveling the complete history of the scrolls since their discovery in 1947. Thiede places them in the context of what has previously been unknown about the Essene community at Qumram. His identification of scroll fragments from Mark’s Gospel and Paul’s first letter to Timothy indicates that such Jewish-Christian writings were written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Moreover. It also suggests that the Essene community viewed the early Christians as fellow Jews, whose provocative ideas about the true Messiah they wanted to scrutinize. Eye-opening and stimulating, The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity” reveals for the first time the fruits of much painstaking and original research. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Since their discoveries in 1947. The Dead Sea Scrolls have been a source of constant controversy. Scholars still argue over the meaning of the fragmentary texts; especially what they say ab

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Peoples of the Past: Babylonians ... moreby H.W.F. Saggs. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 192 pages. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press; 1995) ISBN: 0806127651. Babylon stands with Athens and Rome as a cultural ancestor of western civilization. It was founded by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Who settled in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers before the fourth millennium B.C. Some of the earliest experiments in agriculture and irrigation, the invention of writing, the birth of mathematics and the development of urban life all began there. Biblical associations are also numerous, from Nineveh to the Tower of Babel and the Flood. In"Babylonians" H. W. F. Saggs describes the ebb and flow in the successive fortunes of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites, and Babylonians who flourished in this region. Using evidence from pottery, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, early architecture and metallurgy, he illuminates the myths, religion, languages, trade, politics, and warfare, as well as the legacy, of the Babylonians and their predecessors. During the twentieth century. Collaboration by archaeologists from many nations has greatly increased the range of archaeological evidence, while work by linguists has gradually unlocked the secrets of the thousands of clay tablets recovered from the area. Today the historical record for some periods of ancient Mesopotamia is substantially better than for some centuries of Europe in the Christian era. Gaps and uncertainties remain, but Babylonians conveys a rich and fascinating picture of the development of this remarkable civilization from before the beginning of the third millennium B.C. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Lot of 11 Vintage Glass Ancient Greek Art Slides Archaeological Statuary Pottery
Up for your consideration is a lot of 11 film in glass photographic educational slides of Ancient Greek Art. The lot consists of Ancient Greek Sculpture(Pediment Temple of Zeus) Ancient terracotta pottery(Amphora and Lethykos) and ancient architectural elements(Metope) Three of the slides are images of the East and West Pediments( the triangular upper part of the front of a building in classical style) of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. They were carved in Parian marble sometime between 470 and 460 BC. They are some of the most important examples of ancient Greek art to have survived for us today. The pediments are housed at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia in Greece and the statue of Apollo from the west pediment of the Temple of Zeus was depicted on the obverse of the Greek 1000 drachmas banknote of 1987-2001. Two of the slides are images ... morepainted on a lethykos of the"Warrior Departing" A vase attributed to the the Achilles Painter(ca. 470-425 BC) The lekythos was used for anointing dead bodies of unmarried men and many lekythoi are found in tombs. The images on lekythoi were often depictions of daily activities or rituals. Because they are so often used in funerary situations, they may also depict funerary rites, a scene of loss, or a sense of departure as a form of funerary art. Two more slides of lethykoi are of"Death with Dead Warrior" and"Sleep with Dead Warrior" attributed to the Sabouroff painter from the same era. The Achilles painter also has a slide of an Amphora painting that depicts"Oedipus and the Sphinx" An amphora is a type of container that was used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products. Both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. There is another Amphora slide by the Kleophrades painter of"Maenad" There is also a slide which feature a metope(architectural element) from an ancient Greek temple in Paestum, it depicts Herakles punishing the Kerkopes. The final slide is unlabeled and appears to be of a lethykos fragment wh

Up for your consideration is a lot of 13 film in glass photographic educational slides of Ancient Greek Art. The lot has iconic examples of Ancient Greek Pottery as well as an illustration of the Theater of Dionysus. The pottery features famous artwork( Marsyas Painter. Kadmos Painter, Meidias Painter, Heimarmene Painter) done on various Greek vessels(amphora, lekythos, hydria, oinochoe, pyxis) An impressive collection! An amphora is a type of container that was used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products. Both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. The lekythos was used for anointing dead bodies of unmarried men and many lekythoi are found in tombs. The images on lekythoi were often depictions of daily activities or rituals. The hydria. Primarily a pot for fetching water, derives its name from the Greek word for ... morewater. The term oinochoe(pl. oinochoai; Greek oinos- wine and cheo- I pour) is appropriate to this shape and illustrations of it in use. And appears to have been used in antiquity. It is a single-handled vessel, usually taller than it is wide. A pyxis(πυξίς. Plural pyxides) is a shape of vessel from the classical world, usually a cylindrical box with a separate lid. Originally mostly used by women to hold cosmetics, trinkets or jewellery, surviving pyxides are mostly Greek pottery, but especially in later periods may be in wood, metal, ivory, or other materials. RARE Antique Greek Revival Staffordshire Pottery Cruet, Davenport Banks & Co
For your consideration. A stunning Staffordshire pottery cruet/ ewer in the Greek Revival style. The piece was made by Davenport Banks and Co Etruria(Hanley, Staffordshire) and dates from the early to mid 19th century, produced during the height of the Greek Revival period. European artists and architects were heavily influenced by Greek and Roman art and culture thanks to several significant archeological finds in the 18th and 19th century(i.e. Pompeii and Herculaneum) The cruet is decorated with Greek figures on both sides. The image of the young male feeding the eagle is a copy of Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen's Ganymede and the Eagle. In Greek mythology, Ganymede was a prince whom the god Zeus, in the form of an eagle, carried off to Mount Olympus to serve as cupbearer to the gods because he was so beautiful. The reverse is decorated ... morewith a woman in a toga. The piece is shaped and colored(black and terra-cotta) to mimic Greek Attic pottery. Olbia and other Greek colonies along the north coast of the Black Sea in the 5th century B.C. The site of the Greek colony covers the area of fifty hectares and its fortifications form an isosceles triangle about a mile long and half a mile wide. The first evidence of Greek settlement at the site comes from Berezan Island where pottery has been found dating from the late 7th century.
