Mitchiner ACW- Gobl- This coins is a part of an enigmatic series of anonymous square and round bronzes depicting various animals- coins with a bull, lion, rabbit, scopion, duck, peacock and monkey(and possibly some other animals are known) The Kashmir Smast caves are a series of natural limestone caves, artificially expanded from the Kushan to the Shahi periods, situated in the Babozai mountains in the Mardan Valley in Northern Pakistan. According to recent scholarship based on a rare series of bronze coins and artifacts found in the region, the caves and their adjacent valley probably comprised a sovereign kingdom in Gandhara which maintained at least partial independence for almost 500 years, from c. 4th century AD to the 9th century AD. For most of its history, it was ruled by White Hun(or Hephthalite) ... moregovernors or princes. Scholars contend that the bronze currency found in the region were issued by local semi-independent governors, or Tegins, in the Kashmir Smast valley, paying allegiance to the greater Hunnic Tegins of Gandhara and Bactria. The feudal and tribal nature of the ancient Central Asian states allowed for substantial independence to be exercised by local governors. It is worth noting that all the new varieties found in this area are small bronze pieces, varying in weight between 0.5 and 1.1 g. referred to as the Kashmir Smast standard) They are occasionally small versions of more common drachms circulating in the region, or feature entirely new portraits/ images with some or no resemblance to commonly circulating coins of the period. Given the fact that these pieces have not been found elsewhere in Hunnic domains, we can infer that they were not considered acceptable currency outside of the Kashmir Smast region. However, imitating the coins of the contemporary rulers of Gandhara, and employing certain of their dynastic symbols and portraits, alongside a totally new set of portraits, names/ titles, and symbols, may indicate that while they we

Notes: Long concave silver bar. 43mm long, 8mm wide, struck with a 6-armed Gandharan symbol on each end. 11.46 grams. Rajgor 540-545 var. These fascinating large coins. Equal to about 3 karshapanas, are the most likely candidates to be the very first Indian coins ever struck. During the 6th century BC Gandhara was a subject of the Persian Empire(as known from an inscription dating to the times of Darius, ca.520-518 BC) The Persians are likely to have introduced the native Gandharans to the idea of a struck coinage. The earliest Gandharan coins- shatamanas(=100 manas, the meaning is unknown, also known as"bent bars" were probably based on a Persian siglos standard, ... moresince the average weight of these shatamanas equals to the weight of 2 Persian sigloi. From Gandhara, the idea of struck, or punchmarked, coinage spread south and soon the punchmarked coins were produced in many other regions of northern and central Indai. This theory concerning the first coins in India is quite widespread. Though it is not accepted by everyone(some people prefer an idea of independent invention of coinage, and are against the idea of the foreign introduction) These shatamanas were issued over a long period of time. Though it is uncertain when their production ended(Chandragupta Maurya conquered Gandhara around 300 BC, and the production of the independent Gandharana coinage did not continue pass that point) The good silver shatamanas were replaced by the short debased issues and then by silver plated and copper bars(which are much more common and retail for about 100$ each) The early good silver shatamans are very rare- although a few hoards of these coins were unearthed in the last century, very few coins reached the numismatic market. A Main Library Find ~!~ Twelve years have now passed since we were called to do an estate that had been closed up for seventeen years! This type of call usually gets us excited as they are a treasure trove. Located here in Florida. There was no electricity or running water so we rigged our own lighting and in we went. If you have ever seen the Adams Family you will have some idea as to what we were greeted with! Then the attorney handling the liquidation gave us some background. The home had belonged to an alleged powerful Voodoo Priestess/JooJoo Exorcist. Grand daughter of a Marie Laveau, and favored daughter of a Marie Glapion. This did not have much impact on us other than to cause an uneasy feeling when in the house and we ... moredeclined to spend the night while inventorying. Deciding to stay in a hotel to return during daylight. Our research has shown that this woman was what she claimed and was indeed descended from a long line of well known Vodoun family originating in New Orleans in the early 1800's. We were pretty unnerved by this until we discovered they were also devout Catholics! Although I have to admit this was unlike any Catholic home we have ever been in and some of the items found inside were a little more than unnerving. There was no feeling of dread or unwelcome in the home. However there was quite a bit of contraband and other items we can or will not sell here. This is one of a few pieces from this estate we will be listing this week. So check our other listings. We will. Upon the new guardian's request, issue a named Letter of Authenticity with each piece from this estate, complying with the terms set forth to us by the estate's attorney. This is one of eleven such relics found prominently displayed in antique museum cabinets throughout the Main Library. The image of the pensive bodhisattva is traditionally considered to represent Prince Siddhartha during his first meditation on lifes suffering. He sits with his right foot resting on his left knee, his head and torso slightly inclined, the index finger of his raised right hand touching his brow. The complex composition of the pensive bodhisattva became popular in Gandharan art in the third and fourth centuries. It subsequently spread throughout Asia, undergoing stylistic and iconographic developments in the process and culminating in the seventh century in a number of sculptures of the same iconographic type in Korea and Japan. The present work, with its natural movement and grace and peaceful smile illuminating ... moreits whole expression, is one of the finest examples known. This sculpture is a rare and classic work of the Gandharan period. Created to be seen from the front it embodies the stylistic characteristics of the first Buddhist school of art to represent the Buddha in human form. The influence of the Greco-Roman aesthetic is very evident in the naturalistic treatment of the garment and hairstyle and the realism of the facial expression. Previously Listed@ $7.200.00! $719.00 Opening Bid Three Day Auction Good Luck! ~!~ ~ Voodoo Priestess Estate ~ 11 1/4" Polychrome Schist Guan Yin Head Gandhara Muslim Desecrated Buddhist Relic. Circa 300A.D. A Main Library Find ~!~ Twelve years have now passed since we were called to do an estate that had been closed up for seventeen years! The Voodoo Estate! This type of call usually gets us excited as they are a treasure trove. Located here in Florida. There was no electricity or running water so we rigged our own lighting and in we went. If you have ever seen the Adams Family you will have some idea as to what we were greeted with! Then the attorney handling the liquidation gave us some background. The home had belonged to an alleged powerful Voodoo Priestess/JooJoo Exorcist. Grand daughter of a Marie Laveau, and favored daughter ... moreof a Marie Glapion. This did not have much impact on us other than to cause an uneasy feeling when in the house and we declined to spend the night while inventorying. Deciding to stay in a hotel to return during daylight. Our research has shown that this woman was what she claimed and was indeed descended from a long line of well known Vodoun family originating in New Orleans in the early 1800's. We were pretty unnerved by this until we discovered they were also devout Catholics! Although I have to admit this was unlike any Catholic home we have ever been in and some of the items found inside were a little more than unnerving. There was no feeling of dread or unwelcome in the home. However there was quite a bit of contraband and other items we can or will not sell here. This is one of a few pieces from this estate we will be listing this week. So check our other listings. We will. Upon the new guardian's request, issue a named Letter of Authenticity with each piece from this estate, complying with the terms set forth to us by the estate's attorney.
