Purchased for $90 from an Auction in the early 1950's. Ancient Egyptian Bes Amulet Faience 20th Dynasty circa 1200 BC From a Petrie Excavation The first Edwards Professor. William Flinders Petrie conducted many important excavations. And in 1913 he sold his collections of Egyptian antiquities to University College, transforming the museum into one of the leading collections outside Egypt. Petrie excavated dozens of major sites in the course of his career, including the Roman Period cemeteries at Hawara, famous for the beautiful mummy portraits in classical Roman style; Amarna, the city of king Akhenaten, known as the first king to believe in one God; and the first true pyramid, at Meydum, where he uncovered some of the earliest evidence for mummification. These prayer amulets came out of a big old estate in Philadelphia. That is all I know about them. I open one and it has scroll with writing inside. The other I do not know how to open. I would think it also has something inside. I cannot read the one I opened but I think the writing would be a prayer. I cannot read the language. I was told they are made from a low grade silver.
