A beautifully detailed and inscribed ancient Egyptian steatite scarab beetle amulet. Dating to the 19th- 20th Dynasty, between 1350- 1090 BC. This fascinating piece is accompanied by a long and detailed provenance. The insect carved from a piece of steatite. The oval body cleanly incised, of lentoid form with a dotted border. The base inscribed with an entwined uraeus. Pierced longitudinally for attachment to a necklace or collar in antiquity. The scarab( kheper) beetle was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt because the insect was a symbol of both rebirth and the sun god Ra. Ancient Egyptians were highly superstitious. Ancient Egyptian Seated Bastet Sekhmet Faience Amulet 1075 - 664 BC Lion Goddess
You are bidding on a relatively large faience amulet of Bastet/ Sekhmet. Dating back to the 3rd Intermediate Period, c. 1075- 664 BC. Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess of war and destruction was fervently idolized by sects of ancient Egyptians to prevent her furry while Bastet was equally revered but was more of a protector than vigilante. The two were hard to distinguish between and certain aspects of each were often blended. I would assert that this particular amulet represents Bastet because the sistrum she holds was a sacred instrument in ancient Egypt and often used by celebrants of Bastet during dances and religious ceremonies. The goddess depicted in this amulet is seated on an open work throne decorated with the figure of Nehebka. A serpent protection God, at the base of the back of the throne an incised'ankh' sign, she is ... moreholding an intact Sesheshet Sistrum in her hand.
