Ethiopia: African Ethiopian Traditional Coptic wood tabot with 8 icons.
A very intricate Ethiopian wood tabot made out of a single block of wood with icon squares cut out from the sides that has been delicately hand carved and painted. With different icons on each of the four sides revealing different Christian religious scenes. The wood on the exterior is also beautifully carved and with a Coptic Cross on top. A very unique piece! Dimensions of the tabot are 23 x 7 x 7 centimeters. This is an created and authentic piece of work from Ethiopia- the oldest continuous Christian State in the world dating back to the 4th century AD. This icon was created by a coptic priest and artist that is evidenced by the enduring beauty of this piece. The temporal dimensions and form represented by the imagery originate from ancient ritual traditions of transcribing words and inspired images from God. These icons are conceived ... moreand created from the outside in with a kind of meditative devotional reverence that involves carving repetitive patterns. And beautiful detail in wood, and then painting images on the inside that tell stories of the life of Jesus, along with the unique Saints and Angels of the Ethiopian Orthodox religion. The stories conveyed by the iconic images originate back to the 4th Century among the ancient Christian peoples of the Ethiopian Highlands. The methods of creating these iconic messages continue to be handed down to this day as a way of conveying the mysteries of faith and offer their devotional message of Christ's way of life to those that accept their message. This is a wonderful icon of authentic religious art from Ethiopia that has one front panel door that are both hinged in the traditional manner with string and icons painted on the inside of the door and the center panel. These iconic painted scenes are derived from traditional Ethiopian Orthodox Biblical teachings with unusally large iconic double cherubs similar to the famous. The written inscription in Ge'ez is the ancient language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church

History of the Ethiopian Coptic Cross European missionaries brought Christianity to many parts of Africa. In parallel with colonialism. But this was not the case with Ethiopia. The kingdom was probably the second country(after Armenia) to embrace the Christian faith, when St. Frumentius of Tyre converted King Ezana during the 4th century. There is evidence that Christianity thrived in the country even in the 1st century and for most of the country's history since, the state religion has been Orthodox Christianity. There was a brief ... moreexperiment with Catholicism in the 17th century when Emperor Susenyos allowed himself to be persuaded by Jesuit missionaries from Portugal- possibly a political move to help secure Portuguese and Spanish military assistance. If that was his cunning plan. It backfired. Not only did the European soldiers fail to arrive, but the demands of Rome were just too unpalatable for the Ethiopians. Centuries of culture were threatened and many Ethiopians revolted with great loss of life. The emperor relented, expelled the missionaries, and in 1632 the state religion reverted to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that rather than the familiar European Latin Cross, the Ethiopian Cross has a distinctive'African' appearance. These are often named after the Northern Ethiopian regions and towns they are found in; for example Lalibela. Axum and Gondar. Ethiopian crosses are invariably made from elaborate lattice work. Hand crosses usually include a square at the base, which represents the Ark of the Covenant and both the Ark and the Cross bear the Shekinah. Geometric patterns are common in Ethiopian art and there is order and meaning in the intertwined latt

Egyptian Coptic Byzantine Important Massive Textile fragment Saints Angels
This is a large. Important Coptic or Byzantine textile measuring 30 inches X 17 inches(76.2 cm X 43.2 cm) at its widest points. it is composed of linen and wool with the wool colored mostly crimson but also straw yellow. This is clearly the fragment of a very large tunic or robe and consists of one full clavicle and one large roundel. At the end of each clavicle is the image of probably an angel. Five medallions within the roundel also have angels or cherubs. There are three haloed saints, or perhaps the Holy Family(Jesus, Mary, Joseph) depicted four times with two of the four larger than the other two. It may be that these twelve represent the twelve disciples. There is a horse, or perhaps a saint on a horse in the middle of the clavicle beside the hemmed section for the neck opening. The linen is textured as well, as seen in the pictures. ... moreThere are other depictions in the clavicle and roundel that are difficult to discern. Please see the pictures for further information and detail. This is one of the most detailed pieces of Coptic textile I have ever seen. It was professionally restored, cleaned and conserved in London as can be seen on their website: It is housed in an acid-free box. On an acid-free roller, surrounded by acid-free paper and so forth.

ETHIOPIAN Coptic BIBLE Manuscript ANTIQUE Handwritten GE'EZ Vellum OCCULT Icons
You are bidding on a true piece of Biblical history! Presenting a handwritten Coptic Ethiopian Bible w/ great aging throughout! Written in the Ethiopic(Ge'ez) script. A Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these"Bibles" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of an older age within, with original vellum animal skin pages, faded, browned, and aged, as shown, bound in hand sewn and attached wooden boards, wrapped in newer but quite attractive stamped cross and celtic style leather ... morewraps. We could loosely guess this one originated sometime c1700- late 1800s, with wear to the vellum as an indicator; the wraps probably added in the 1900s. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces. Written in red/black. As shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the savior. The Bible also includes 4 gorgeously painted native hand painted icons, probably also painted over the leaves in the 1900s. This example is bound in square wooden boards. Leather wrapped; the covers tied through with twine. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, and some staining, which is normal for these rare gems; this one undoubtedly hundreds of years old. There are roughly 27 leaves/54 pages in this, with the four icons, as shown. Obtained in an online auction direct from Ethiopia. Bible measures 3.75" x 2.75" x 1.25" thick. A True treasure. These have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and this particular copy has a true feeling of history and culture, especially with the aging and stained vellum, and is extremely rare and unique. Best of luck! Posted with the

17th century Christian Egyptian Coptic Bible Manuscript Book of 388 pages
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE BN First of all. I guarantee that whoever purchases this volume will be completely and 100% satisfied with it. This is a beautiful COPTIC Lectionary or Qatamarus Manuscript. Consisting of 194 leaves or 388 pages. This manuscript has_ ADD total number] large initial letters(see the 12 scanned images for a very small number of them) Also. Notice that sometimes a large initial letter is turned into something else: for example, the letter"A" or"Alpha" is turned into a bird-monster(see the 8th scanned image, 1st from the bottom) and an"O" is turned into a human face(see the 11th scanned image, 2nd from the top) AFTER the last page of handwritten text. There is a blank sheet, and holding it up to the light, one sees a most unusual watermark in the paper, consisting of a row of ... morethree horizontal crescent moons that have a human profile face in the moon; very unusual. This manuscript is written in the Bohairic Coptic dialect. With some Christian Arabic words. Dated to the 17th century by Dr. Marian Robertson Wilson. Who also identified the daily readings, as being made from Psalms, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, and many other New Testament quotations. The page size is about 9 in. x 13 in. And because they are so large, it is sometime difficult to scan images in the inner gutter edge(see the 4th and 6th scanned images) The reason that there are some drops of wax on some pages is because it was used in liturgy in a Coptic church. Using lighted candles. Based on the Coptic numbering of the pages. There appear to be two leaves missing from the front and one leaf missing from the back of the book, but it is still an amazing book. This big manuscript book contains over a thousand instances of the Nomina Sacra or Sacred Names(which are used for such terms as God. Lord, Jesus, Christ, Savior, Father, Son, Holy, Spirit, Cross, Heaven, and even Jerusalem) and you can tell it is a Nomina Sacra because it has a horizontal line above with a red dot on or above th

Fragment of a Bohairic Coptic Prayer Book Manuscript, Arabic headings ca. 1500
Large Fragment of a Bohairic Coptic Prayer Book With Arabic Headings[Manuscript on Paper] ca. 1500. Binding: Hardcover(Vellum) Size: 8 3/4" x 6 3/4" Undated. Ca 15th-16th century manuscript on laid paper(judging from the use of Arabic headings but with no parallel text, it is much more likely to be earlier than this than later) rebound in modern vellum(possibly reclaimed vellum) 10 leaves, apparently continuous and the first leaf with an architectural border with the Greek phrase"with God" possibly representing the beginning of the book. The Coptic is in an unusual hand that is difficult to place with any precision, but it is likely Egypt and the book came with a note that stated that it was from the Wadi Natrun Monasteries. In any case, a very attractively written manuscript with rubrication and initial flourishes.
