The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Coptic Byzantine Large Textile Fragment with Angels, Cherubs, Saints
This is a large. Important Coptic or Byzantine textile measuring 30 inches X 17 inches(76.2 cm X 43.2 cm) at its widest points. it is composed of linen and wool with the wool colored mostly crimson but also straw yellow. This is clearly the fragment of a very large tunic or robe and consists of one full clavicle and one large roundel. At the end of each clavicle is the image of probably an angel. Five medallions within the roundel also have angels or cherubs. There are three haloed saints, or perhaps the Holy Family(Jesus, Mary, Joseph) depicted four times with two of the four larger than the other two. It may be that these twelve represent the twelve disciples. There is a horse, or perhaps a saint on a horse in the middle of the clavicle beside the hemmed section for the neck opening. The linen is textured as well, as seen in the pictures. ... moreThere are other depictions in the clavicle and roundel that are difficult to discern. Please see the pictures for further information and detail. This is one of the most detailed pieces of Coptic textile I have ever seen. This comes from the collections of a great aunt who recently died at 106 years of age who started her collections in the early 1930s and I will send a letter supplying this provenance if requested. It was professionally restored, cleaned and conserved in London as can be seen on their website: It is housed in an acid-free box. On an acid-free roller, surrounded by acid-free paper and so forth.

Antique Metal & Leather Cross w/ Ancient Egyptian Glyphs-Coptic Or Gnostic?
Large Metal Cross w/ Egyptian Glyphs! I bought this Antique Cross many years ago at an antique store. Has been boxed up since! It has metal wrapped around leather, at its base. With Egyptian type hieroglyphs on the front and back of this cross. It is known as a"wearable" cross for the"highest person" of the Church in which it originates. It could also be a"handheld" type large cross, from the Church in which it originates. Its on its original chain, which is large, and can be worn around the neck. The cross measures 17" long x 6" wide. The chain is 1/2" thick, and is 16" long. I know this item to be at least 90+ years of age, but believe it is much older. ETHIOPIAN Coptic BIBLE Manuscript ANTIQUE Handwritten GE'EZ Vellum OCCULT Rare
You are bidding on a true piece of Biblical history! Presenting a handwritten Coptic Ethiopian Bible w/ great aging throughout! Written in the Ethiopic(Ge'ez) script. A Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these"Bibles" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of an older age within, with original vellum animal skin pages, faded, browned, and aged, as shown, bound in a thread binding through the centers. We could loosely guess this one originated sometime c late 1700s- early 1900s, ... morewith wear to the vellum as an indicator; the browning and charring perhaps added at a later date. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces. Written in red/black. As shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the savior. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example. And some staining, which is normal for these rare gems; this one undoubtedly hundreds of years old. There are roughly 25 leaves/50 pages in this, as shown. Obtained in an online auction direct from Ethiopia. Bible measures 5" x 3.5. A True treasure. These have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and this particular copy has a true feeling of history and culture, especially with the aging, charring and stain to the vellum, and is extremely rare and unique. Best of luck! Posted with the

You will never see another leaf like this one! This Coptic leaf has an extremely RARE and unique Christian symbol that dramatically shows Christ hanging on the Cross. After examining thousands of Coptic pages over thirty years of interesting research. I have only seen a few. The word is STAUROC or"stauros" meaning"cross, but is intentionally shortened to STPC, and then the two inner letters of the word(T and P) are superimposed on top of each other to create the figure or illustration of the head of Christ hanging on the cross(see the 1st scanned image, 3rd line from the top, center) This is a rare illuminated Coptic Christian Bible manuscript leaf. The date that ... morethis manuscript was written by the scribe is estimated to be the 17th century or early 18th century. On thick paper. With some discoloration, especially around the edges of the page, due to age and liturgical use over the centuries. Total size of the page is about 6 3/4 in. x 9 1/4 in. The Coptic text in its distinctive and beautiful large uncial letters is found on both sides of the leaf. There are several instances of red rubrication in letters and words. As well as diacritical and punctuation marks. T he following sacred words seen on this particular leaf: The word is STAUROC or"stauros" meaning"cross. but is intentionally shortened to STPC, with the two inner letters of the word(T and P) then placed on top of each other, which forms the figure or illustration of the head of Christ on the cross(see the 1st scanned image. 3rd line from the top, center) This leaf also has several instances of NominaSacra or"Sacred Names" which abbreviations can be identified by having a horizontal line above and a red dot the line: the important phrase"The Holy Spirit" see the 2nd scanned image. The Congo Collection - Rare Century-old Ethiopian Silver Coptic Christian Icon
Coptic Christian Icon- Ethiopia This is an extremely rare and well-fashioned Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Icon which I brought out of Ethiopia several years ago. Over the last few years the government has all but halted the transport of authentic Ethiopian Orthodox Church icons out of the country. Additionally. The painting and craftsmanship of this particular piece makes it highly, highly collectible. This is one of the nicest Tewahedo Orthodox Icons I have ever seen and will make a fantastic addition to one's collection. Here are the specifications of this icon: Weight: 170.3 Grams. Measurements: Height- 4.875 inches Width Closed- 3.625 inches Width Open- 5.24 inches. Composition: This icon was tested twice for precious metals composition; once in Ethiopia via an acid test and once in the U.S. via a handheld XRF Analysis Gun. In Ethiopia. ... moreThis icon was tested at one of the larger"Werk Bets" Gold Houses) in Piazza- Addis Ababa. They concluded that the piece was a silver alloy consisting of 35-50% silver. However I had an XRF analysis done more recently in Miami- February 2013- and that revealed a variety of different readings ranging from 55-88% silver. It was the assayers opinion that the icon was a silver alloy. This particular icon was fashioned extremely well. And was also important enough to be repaired- most likely very close to its production, yet before painting. There are several metal patches welded on the reverse side of the icon. Each of these icons usually tells a story. Unfortunately I do not know enough of the Ge'ez(Ethiopian) alphabet to decipher which saints have been portrayed. The colors used. The position of the eyes, the halos and positioning of the individuals often have hidden and secret religious meanings which have special implications for Coptic Christian Ethiopian Orthodox practitioners. The painting and level of artistry of this spectacular relic is phenomenal and adds to its overall value. The outside of this icon has been gently cleaned of the residue from many deca
