The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. This beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing female figure is depicted wearing a headband, earrings and a necklace with multiple pendants. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. The famous mural artist Diego Rivera began his collection of Mexican pottery with small Colima figures- the collection later grew into a national treasure which was eventually housed in the Rivera Museum in Mexico City. This piece is very unusual due to its size and weight. This item will be double boxed for shipping) I will pick up the cost of Insurance FREE) History Translated from the Nahuatl language. Colima’s name derives from a combination of colli meaning ancestors or gods. And maitl. Meaning domain. For 25 centuries the region has nurtured a succession of cultures. Because of its remote location and lack of elaborate artifacts or monumental public works this western Mexican state did not attract interest from archeologists ... moreor researchers until recently. Today Colima is renowned for its multitude of ancient shaft tombs and extraordinary dog ceramics. Despite stylistic conventions. Colima dogs accurately depict innumerable distinctive canine behaviors. The postures, gestures and expressions reveal careful observation, attention to detail and masterful technique rather than any attempt at mass production. Realistic forms predominate, but dogs are also portrayed in elaborate burial dioramas or mysteriously perched on the shoulders of priests or warriors. The most recognizable motif is a pair of dancing or fighting dogs. Most Colima dogs are sleek and smooth but one member of this pair often exhibits deeply incised concentric lines on the face and body. Delineated ribs and vertebrae, and a raised tail to symbolize hairlessness. This mutation occurs regularly in all mammals and zoologist Glover Allen surmised that it first appeared in the Mesoamerican dog population 3500 years ago. By the time of European arrival. Hairless dogs were prevalent throughout Mexico, Central America, the Southwestern U.S, the Caribbean and northern coastal regions Ecuador and Peru. Hairless dogs and the custom of ritual

ANTIQUE COLIMA RECLINTARIO C.300 BC - 300 AD
The reclintario is one of the most interesting works of art left by the Colima of western Mexico. It is a mythical combination of beasts. Variously described as half bird and half dog or a divine bird with human attributes. It is sculpture, vessel and furniture accessory, serving as a back rest for persons of high status. Filled with water, it provided cooling through evaporation. While providing relief from the heat in any circumstance, it would have been particularly useful when giving audience or passing judgement. The use would have the advantage of comfort as well as the appearance of ease, reinforcing his superiority over his confronter. Of polished red terra cotta, characteristic for Colima ceramics, with angled filler spout and human leg supports. A rare large example, well sculpted with good finish and color. Here is a RPPC real photo postal mailing card. It is a 1907 Colima Mexico and Bennington New Hampshire cancelled divided back postal mailing card. It shows what must have been the job superintendent office and him posed on horseback with U.S. Cavalry saddlebags. It was written by A. R. Ross to his sister Miss Effie Ross of Bennington. he talks about working on the railway construction project. Here is some history of the century long project. The railroad to Colima By the turn of the 19th century there was keen interest in completing a line between Colima and Guadalajara. Manzanillo was already linked to Colima. By the Mexican National Constitution Company, but this line terminated in Colima. In 1898 the franchise for this line was given to the Central Railroad, which quickly began construction. After reaching Tuxpan, 192 km later, however, ... morethey ran out of money and(1901) work had to be suspended. Their construction contract was revoked, and the concession given to an offshoot of the same company, called"Central Railroad to the Pacific" which finished the line in time for its December 12th, 1908, inauguration by President Diaz. The line had taken longer than expected to finish, partly owing to a tragic accident in 1906 when a landslide overwhelmed a tunnel which was under construction, killing 17 workers Caption is" back print describing the above" Shipping is $3.29 with double layers of cardboard protection. Origin:Mexico Circa: 400 AD to 600AD Dimensions: 9" long x 4 1/2" wide x 4 high Condition: Superb. With the usual very minor losses. No repairs. Dogs were revered and respected in ancient Mexico's Indian culture. The"Colima Dog. a distant relative of the Mexican Hairless and the Chihuahua, may have been a pet, or it may have been fattened for eating- or both! Among the early colonial immigrants, a Jesuit Priest, Sahagún, examined and wrote of the things concerning the"new" lands of America. Regarding these dogs of Colima, which are generally portrayed as quite fat, even grotesquely so, but many of which have happy faces, he says, The dogs of this land have four names, called: Chichi, Itzcuintli, Xochiocoyotl, Tetlamin; and also tehuizotl… They raise other dogs that they call Xoloitzcuintli with no hair at ... moreall… There are other dogs that are called tlalchichi, short and round, that are very good to eat" It is believed that the hairless dogs. The Xoloitzcuintli, represented the god Xolotl, who had the task of guiding the dead on their journey to"Mictlan, that is, the Spirit World. The Aztecs believed that in order for the souls of the dead to reach"Mictlan" they had to cross the black river"Apanoayan" as well as overcoming other obstacles, and these hairless Xoloitzcuintlis had the task of guiding their human masters across this river, along with helping them overcome all the other difficulties on the journey. It is said that these red-colored dogs became the chosen guide because for a black dog to the perform the task, it was found to be difficult to distinguishing its black shape on a black river, in the murky underworld. When a white dog was approached as a substitute, that dog refused because it didn't want its coat soiled by the dark waters. The red dog then stepped up to the task and performed it well. Erotic Precolumbian sculpture; Colima, Mexico, female nude, pre-columbian art
2.000 year old gingerbread woman(1) Very rare example of erotic Precolumbian art. This is a Colima gingerbread woman. West Mexico, 1,800-2,200 years old. Terracotta sculpture- in a style similar to other Colima. Classic period(200 B.C. 200 A.D. flat, standing, nude females(which can be seen on the internet by searching for"Precolumbian Colima sculpture" except that this one has a huge mons and buttocks. Other features include: otherwise flat profile; small breasts; pouty. Open lips; stylized. Minimalist face; ear rings; hair in 2 buns on top of head; thick neck; broad shoulders; truncated hands and feet; and orange clay color slightly mottled from uneven heat in firing and/or age(particularly visible on the back) Comparables sell for about $4.000 at Christie's Auction House. 2) Dimensions. 6 inches high(about 16 centimeters) ... more3) Condition. Mint. Pristine, museum quality. 4) Provenance. I bought this sculpture in 1967 from a source I trusted who I met in the home of my friend Kurt Stavenhagen in Mexico City when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas. Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring the Maya ruins at Chichen Itza in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life Magazines and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. 5) Shipping. No charge for a U.S. address. $10 off if you purchase more than one listing and I can ship more than one item in one package. There is ONE $10 discount. Even if you purchase

Vintage Colima Terracotta Art Pottery Standing Warrior Man Figurine Sculpture
Welcome you are viewing a great terracotta from Colima Mexico. Is a Standing Warrior Man using a strange suit. It looks like, it's from West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE- 300 CE. but I believe this beauty was made 10 or 12 years ago using the same technique as 1000. Years ago. This Colima figurine sculpture is in the form of a Warrior in defend pose? The surfaces shows this culture's signature duotone. Red and brown slip decoration, that was meticulously.
