On offer is this lovely looking three stone set Byzantine silver ring. Dating to the 8th- 10th century AD. The stones are two tiny amethysts flanking a large central garnet. The garnet was popular with the Germanic tribes to the north and west of Byzantium. This included the Anglo Saxons, Visigoths and Merovingian Kingdoms. It is likely this ring would have been worn by a pagan due to the lack of Christian symbols(that was inscribed on most Byzantine jewellery of this period) This ring is slightly distorted in shape due to burial, but it looks fine to wear and has no damage. The bezel is a thick rounded shape that measures. 12mm X 10mm with a little lip decoration. This ring gives us a nice motif of an early Christian cross. The design on the bezel is a well executed"Trefoiled" Cross. The term"trefoil" refers to the three circles at the end of each ... morearm of the Cross. This is a pattern that was added to the Cross to represent the Holy Trinity. This is a nicely executed and noticeable Cross. This design was done expertly and is nicely framed by four pairs of light rays. I believe that this design was done on a much older ring which is most probably from the Roman Era.
