A rare. Striking and attractive Bronze Age bronze socketed bag axe, dating to around 900 B.C. This piece is in beautiful condition, and stands as one of the best preserved examples of its type. The axe is of a form prevalent between 1000- 800 B.C. across Europe. With curved blade edge, oval socket and loop. In antiquity, a wooden handle would have inserted into the bag-shaped socketed end and would have been held in place by a cord which would have been threaded through the metal loop. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of early Europe for human habitation. They could also be used in battle and for religious purposes. As dedications. Indeed, these axes are often found in hoards throughout central Europe, where they are believed to have served a votive function. They were often deposited in rivers, springs and bogs, ... morelikely because of connections with a watery underworld. A beautiful and rare ancient British bronze flat axe of early form. Dating to around 2300- 2000 B.C. This Bronze Age axe is of striking form. With subtly curved blade edges tapering into a long neck. Its style suggests it dates to the Mount Pleasant phase of the early Bronze Age. It was during this period that metalworking grew from its early stages into a widespread industry, initially using copper and gold but with bronze working appearing at the end. Interestingly, this bronze piece displays the form of older British axes cast in pure copper, and may therefore be a particularly early example of ancient alloying techniques. The distinctive form is complemented by an attractive deep green patina. This axe would have been forged by an itinerant craftsman. Who would have travelled long distances across the forests and farmland of ancient Britain ... moreto sell these most treasured of items. An ancient Chinese bronze halberd blade or ge(戈) Dating to the Han Dynasty, 206 B.C. 220 A.D. The ge is considered the most characteristic weapon of ancient China. Having been wielded by warriors during the early Dynasties of Shang, Zhou and Han. Its use in war was restricted to only this most ancient period of Chinese civilization, as such its distinctive form has come to be seen as symbolic of this golden age. Examples from the Han period are amongst the very latest examples, as such this piece represents the final flourish of an iconic Chinese weapon type. The brutal power of this weapon is clear. The blade of typical'bird head' shape, the rectangular reverse and tang pierced for attachment to the wooden haft, now long since perished. The blade was designed as one component of a type of halberd known as a ji(戟) A composite weapon ... moremade from a double mounting of the ge with a mao(spear) set above it on a single pole. This is a bronze axe head with its original verdigris finish. It dates from the Eastern Bronze Age circa 965 B. C. and has a tubular ribbed socket. The axe measures 5 3/4 inches in height and displays a museum or collection accession number painted on one side in flat black paint. It was originally auctioned by Sotheby's Auction House. Cylindrical socket and rounded projection at the back. Indentations and remnants of the original wraps can be seen on the shaft, an extremely rare occurrence. Blunt ended axes such as this weapon were designed to cause depressed fractures and deep lacerations to the head.
