It has very thick and flared blades. The socket has a raised ring or ridge around it and underneath both blades are three raised lines cast into the bronze. This is quite an unusual type acquired from a large private collection. It weighs 611 grams and measures 16 cm across. This piece is a must for any ancient weapon collection. Superb Prehistoric European Bronze Age Palstave Axe - 1200 BC
An exceptionally well preserved European prehistoric Bronze Age palstave axe. Dating to 1200- 1000 BC. An artefact of powerful elegance; with curved blade edges. Deep flanges and the body decorated with subtle ribs. A wooden handle would originally have been inserted into the flanges, held in place by a cord threaded through the integral loop. It is extremely rare to find an example such as this so well preserved, particularly the outer edges of the blade and the loop, which are most often broken off. In looking at this piece. We should not see just a functional object, but an artefact of particular ritual and religious significance. The fact that it has survived in this exceptional condition is not down to chance, rather it was carefully and intentionally buried, either for safekeeping or more likely as an offering. Metal was hard to obtain ... morein the Bronze Age, only those of relative wealth could afford it, even fewer could afford to discard it in this way. What this artefact represents is the actions and hopes of a real individual living over three thousand years ago. They held this tool in their hands. A very nice early example of a Bronze Age. Date- 1900- 1700BC. A Bronze Age copper alloy developed flat axe. Possibly from the Bandon type(Schmidt and Burgess, 1981, 65-7) The axe has a broad head. Tapering to a narrown butt. The axe is very worn so some features may no longer be visible. There are possibly traces of a flange along the wings of the axe. The axe has a mid-light green patina. 5lb 10 oz of solid bronze this axe is stamped 1872 and features a multi purpose form. The head is 9 1/2" front to back, the axe blade is aprox 3 1/2" it has never been sharpened. This axe does have very minor wear in the form of light scratches and light pits these hardly detract i expect this to be an older item it could be worse honestly. When i found it at a estate sale it was so dirty i didnt even know it was bronze, a few hours of brass cleaner and towel polishing it later i had it clean and it has been on my wall since. This is a fantastic Vintage Sculpture! It is a very heavy metal. Not sure exactly but the base looks and feels to be cast iron or steel and has a coating on it like bronze and the axe looks like it is made of steel. It is of a log/tree stump with an axe in it, the stump measures 6 1/4" tall x 3 1/2" round and the axe measures 5 3/4" tall making this a total of 12" tall. This can be used as a door stop as well. It is in good condition and very unusual, I could not find any makers/artists marks on it. This came from my great aunt's estate. She was a woman of wealth& high stature in her community.
