Rare 1933 cover to German Warka Archaeological Expedition for Iraq antiquities
Correspondence sent by airmail 9 March 1933 to H. Lenzen of the Warka Expedition in care of the German Legation in Baghdad. Iraq, from from Ar. Haller at the Metropole Hotel in Beyrouth, Lebanon. No contents. German scientific teams had discovered the Mask of Warka. Described as the"first accurate depiction of a human face, at the site in the early 1900s. Following a hiatus owing to World War II, German research at Uruk resumed under Lenzen, the recipient of this envelope, in 1947. The spellbinding story of the Warka Vase found by the Lenzen team of Germans is told below courtesy of the Dieselpunk web site. Posted by Larry Amyett Jr. of Mesquite, Texas. It was the second day of January in 1934 and an expedition of German Assyriologists was in the middle of their sixth excavation at the site of the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk located ... morein the southern region of modern Iraq. History was made on that winter’s day when they discovered one of the greatest of all archeological finds: the Warka Vase. Logged into the recordings of the expedition as W14873. The Warka Vase is made of alabaster and stands roughly three feet tall with evidence of damage and repairs made millennia ago. The importance of the Warka Vase cannot be overstated for it’s one of the earliest surviving works of narrative relief sculpture, dating back to between 3200–3000 BCE. Disaster struck in April 2003 when looting occurred during the Invasion of Iraq. Some by mobs and some by Bath Party members as well as by museum staff, due to the US forces failing to secure the historical sites of Iraq including the National Museum keeping the vase. The looters smashed the display case holding the vase, forcibly snapped the vase off its base leaving just the foot of the vase behind. On June 12. 2003, after a declaration of an amnesty for the looters, the vase was returned by three unidentified men in their late twenties driving a red Toyota. Holland, to highlight a museum show they had of historical artworks and artifacts from ancient China. The text is in the DUTCH language, but nevertheless, the catalog is pretty straightforward. It consists, as did the original show) of items from the Han, T’ang, and related dynasties which seem to have been excavated in the 1950s, and exhibited in the West here for the first time. The variety of items is quite astonishing, ranging from ceramic and pottery items, to coins, metalwork, weapons, sculpture, wood and even fabric items. Ceremonial pieces, as well as everyday items on display. There were 220 pieces in the exhibition, and they are all illustrated here with black and white photographs. There is also a write-up ... morefor each item, giving it’s historical details, its use, where& when it was discovered and so on, and though my Dutch is pretty rusty, it’s pretty easy to figure out! A great book for anyone interested in Chinese art and culture, or history. There are also 12 full colour, full-page plates, including the famous jade-suit of armour that has been widely displayed. Also a written introduction to the whole catalogue by the editors/ curators. The book is 106 pages long, and is a softcover. It was published by the Museum in Amsterdam in 1975, and is a large format book, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It is in pretty good condition– some normal shelf-wear, but no writing, no stains or soiling, a clean cover and tight spine. Top bidder should add $9.90 postage within North America. This is the first edition of a 2 volume book with dissertations on the first three books of the Bible printed in 1766 in London. They belonged the James Esdaile. Jun. and are signed by him 1798. The pages are all in good condition except for foxing on the first few pages in vol. 2. They are not torn. the calf covers are rubbed and the front covers are separated. Iacobi Mazochii Romanae acad. bibliopolae, 1521. Rare early Post Incunable on Roman antiquities. With gorgeous Roman typeface typography and illustrations. T he first printed repertory of Roman inscriptions. Epigrammata Antiquae Urbis(April 1521) Contains some 3,000 inscriptions, mostly of epitaphs. This work includes inscriptions ranging from Roman Republican times to the age of Justinian I and is illustrated with somewhat stylized woodcuts showing some of the buildings and monuments of Rome, such as the Pantheon, the Arch of Constantine,and the Pyramid of Cestius. Typographically Mazzocchi's work is of interest for his very early use of a large-format ... moreupper-case roman typeface for title-pages, headings and other prominent lines. This is present in the Epigrammata but existed at least as early as 1513. Early printers in roman type generally set titles and headings in the same size and style as the text. And it was mainly German-speaking printers such as Froben who developed the use of display-sized fonts from about 1516 onwards, so that Mazzocchi's type may well have been the first of its kind. And there is no doubt- this fragment displays some of that fine use as well as some stunning woodcuts. Finely bound into a small folio. 11.75" x 8.25" featuring recent red half calf over grained cloth; the spine with five raised bands with gilt deco. Light external wear. Very well preserved, the interior pages remain(for the most part) in good shape, although there are a handful with excessive staining, as shown. There are also a few other small repairs, chips and losses throughout, with the final leaf laid down and with various paper strip repairs. Which displays some fine hand colored initials as well. This bowl is decorated in colourful hues of orange. Red, brown, and cream. The outer panel is decorated with peppers/capsicum which surround the bowl. There are 3 tiny chips on the inner rim which can be seen in the photo. The colours associated with the“Nazca Culture” are earth based, as can be seen in this beautiful bowl. This figure dates to approx 350 BC. Ceramic figurines and vessels in this shape of human form are representative of the Jama Coaque culture. It developed around the San Isidoro sector in the North of the Manabi province in Ecuador. It is well preserved with growth deposits however there are some losses. Ie. the thumb on the right hand. Ear and nose rings half remaining. However, the large necklace with a half moon pendent is still intact. Much of the colour is preserved on this figure, which is rare. Jama Coaque ceramic figures are usually bulky as in this case, and usually have round faces with wide fronts and noses and big eyes. Much emphasis is placed on ... morepersonal appearance as they feature deliberate cranial deformations, sophisticated dress and head-dress, and a wide variety of ornaments including nose ornaments and ear spools. In this example the Shawman appears to be seated on a stool with one of the stool legs missing in the back. Measures 6.5" in height.
