A rare. Heavy Viking Iron helmet, dating to the 8th- 10th Century A.D. The hemispherical dome reinforced with two iron sections. Further reinforced at the top and brim by two thick iron bands, riveted into place numerous times. This piece appears to have been restored in ancient times, the outside of the helmet being reinforced with sheets of iron and riveted in place along the bands and dome. All covered with an ancient patina, suggesting that the helmet was reused in ancient times. Losses are visible both on the interior and exterior of the helmet, with associated patch-repairs. This type of helmet. In use from the Migration period onwards, is often referred to as a"Bandhelm" on account of the two thick bands that support the dome and brim. ANCIENT VIKING WHITE GLASS BEADS C.866-1067A.D.
For many years. We supplied art galleries with ancient and ethnographic jewelry and components. At that time, we had perhaps the world's largest stock. Now we are clearing out our stock and have prepared this listing of what we have to offer. Most of these were purchased in the 1960-80's and have been off the market for years. These are some of the rarest beads on the market anywhere. Many are available in multiple units. These seem to be unique to the English settlements(Danelaw) They are hand wound. Fairly uniform about 5.1 mm(2/10" and vary more in thickness than diameter. They have a good rich color with a little encrustation from burial. Over 1 1/2" total. 15 beads. BD70

Ancient Viking Ring C.866-1067A.D. Size 9 (19.2mm)
Vikings occupied about half of what is today. England, from 866-1067. They farmed and ran small industries working in wood, iron stone and glass. With a history of conquest and plunder, jewelry was an important part of their culture and this ring was produced in the English settlement of York which they called Jorvik.
