Eyes, clypeus and side plates are accurately represented. Front and hind legs are ladder scored. The base is inscribed with a cartouche that attempts to reproduce the name of the pharaoh Sheshi. The text before and after calls him, Son of Re' and concludes, asking he may'live forever. The scarab was bought as authentic but certain aspects don't appear"correct" it is accurately carved as a New Kingdom scarab. But, the base is inscribed and designed as a Second Intermediate/Hyksos scarab, referencing the pharaoh Sheshi! I had thought it might be a later'commemorative. Ancient Egyptian"Sema Tawy Motif" Scarab and a Primitive Wadjet Eye and Bes Amulet_ 100% Genuine I have a steatite scarab with some of the blue/green glaze remaing on the face. The rounded back of the scarab has some smoothing of details due to wind and sand erosion. The flat base has the early style of the Sema Tawy unification of Upper and Lower Egypt motif showing the intertwining of a lotus plant and a papyrus plant. This motif was popular at the end of the Middle Kingdom Period ca. 1900 BC. There is a small hole on ne of the plants that occured when the craftsman was doing his engraving. The thorax and wing case of the scarab are cleanly incised, the reverse bears the symbol of Horus and feather of ma'at, a favoured Phoenician theme. magnificent pair of ancient scarab beetles New Kingdom c1550-1070 BC The image of the scarab beetle is prominent in the royal funerary decoration of the New Kingdom(about 1550-1070 BC) After laying its eggs in a ball of dung. The scarab beetle rolls the ball before it wherever it goes. When the young beetles hatch they appear, apparently miraculously, from the dung. Thus to the ancient Egyptians the scarab beetle was a symbol of rebirth and represents the god Khepri, who was thought to push the sun disc through the morning sky, as a scarab beetle pushes its ball of dung. The scarab beetle was also an important amulet. It first appeared during the Old Kingdom(about 2613-2160 BC) And was often used as a seal, mounted on a ring, with an inscription on the flat underside. A beautifully detailed and inscribed ancient Egyptian steatite scarab beetle amulet. Dating to the 19th- 20th Dynasty, between 1350- 1090 BC. This fascinating piece is accompanied by a long and detailed provenance. The insect carved from a piece of steatite. The oval body cleanly incised, of lentoid form with a dotted border. The base inscribed with an entwined uraeus. Pierced longitudinally for attachment to a necklace or collar in antiquity. The scarab( kheper) beetle was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt because the insect was a symbol of both rebirth and the sun god Ra. Ancient Egyptians were highly superstitious.
