Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. In his“Meditations” a series of notes to himself, he formulated his pantheist Stoic bel

Mounted onto plaque or shadow box upon request(additional shipping charges apply) ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire Provinicial Judaea(present-day Israel- Palestine) 1st Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Outside Diameter: 53 x 48 millimeters. Inside Diameter: 44 x 39 millimeters. Band Width: 5 millimeters. Band Thickness: 5 millimeters. Weight: 23.34 grams. CONDITION: Good. Intact of sound integrity. Moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. NOTES: Can be worn as a pendant. We will include the contemporary copper/bronze tone chain shown 60 centimeters(24 inches) in length. Other chains available on request; ... moresilver and gold plate; sterling. Though very simple, primitive Roman bronze bracelet constructed of stock which leans toward square, circa first century AD. It would fit a woman of very slight build, and with that caveat, is completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely disfigured by corrosion, this particular piece happened to come to rest in reasonably gentle soil conditions. The consequence is that though you can see clear evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground, nonetheless to casual examination it is quite pleasant, with the rich, warm glow of ancient bronze. Of course in these photo enlargements. Or to close scrutiny, these blemishes are quite distinct. The entire bracelet bears witness to the fact that it spent

Paleolithic items of adornment have been unearthed that date back 75.000-100,000 years. It is theorized that jewelry originated as a purely functional item used to fasten animal hides together allowing ... morethem to be worn as clothing. Findings suggest that jewelry making became more prevalent over 40.000 years ago as mankind migrated from Africa and the Middle East into continental Europe. Early necklaces and bracelets were made from readily available materials such as bone, teeth, shells and stone strung together using twine from animal sinew or catgut. The forging of copper some 7.000 years ago allowed metal to be utilized as a material to craft jewelry. The smelting of copper and tin to make the alloy bronze heralded the advent of the Bronze Age some 5.000-6,000 years ago. It is conceivable that metal workers used their knowledge of metallurgy to craft items of adornment as well as tools and weapons. Jewelry has served(and continues to serve) three basic roles. As an ornament it attracts attention and could be used as a testament to hunting prowess or more general attributes. As an amulet holding supernatural power it protected the wearer against physical harm. Warded off evil and healed ailments. As society evolved it also became a symbol of wealth or social standing. Rings were extremely popular among the Romans. Their faith in the curative and protective powers attribute

Ancient Bronze Roman Judaea Israel Palestine Bracelet Display Plaque 100AD
Genuine Ancient Roman Bronze Bracelet Circa 100 A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Roman Bronze Arm Bracelet. Mounted into Glass-Fronted Display Plaque. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire Provincial Judaea(present-day Israel/Palestine) 1st Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Outside Diameter: 40* 38 millimeters. Inside Diameter: 37 1/2* 35 millimeters. Weight: 2.04 grams. Plaque Size: 190* 140 millimeters(8* 6 USA inches) ARTIFACT CONDITION: Good. Intact of sound integrity. Moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A well preserved. Though very simple Roman bronze bracelet circa 1st century A.D. Clearly worn by a child of Ancient Rome(children being considerably smaller than contemporary populations) it would surely fit non-one except for an infant today. However with that caveat, ... moreis completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered completely intact. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) However most small metal artifacts such as this suffer extensive disfigurement due to heavy porosity, or corrosion. Although this specimen possesses obvious and unmistakable signs of burial, the piece is not heavily corroded or disfigured to this extent. The bracelet does not exhibit the workmanship which would be characteristic of high-end jewelry. Rather this is a specimen as one might expect to find on a child of a common Roman citizen or soldier. It is a wonderful example of early Roman jewelry, and of unimpaired integrity. The bracelet possesses a very nice tone to it. Is quite handsome, and makes a very distinctive and uncommon piece of ancient jewelry. The Romans were very fond of jewelry and other personal adornments. Typical jewelry included bracelets worn both on the forearm as well as upper arm, rings, brooches, pendants, earrings, hair pins, as well as decorative buckles and fibulae. Inasmuch as the bracelet is too small to be worn as a bracelet, and

Paleolithic items of adornment have been unearthed that date back 75.000-100,000 years. It is theorized that jewelry originated as a purely functional item used to fasten animal hides together allowing them to be worn as clothing. And not the setting, we can dismount the gemstone and offer you the gemstone without the setting. Just let us know, and yes, we’ll discount the price by the cost of the setting. DETAIL: Ancient Mediterranean cultures(Greek. Roman, Persian, Celt) believed that a garnet could give ... moreits wearer guidance in the night, allowing them to see when others could not. Garnet was also worn for protection when traveling, as garnet was believed to warn the wearer of approaching danger. The ancient Greeks believed it guarded children from drowning, and it was also thought to be a potent antidote against poisons. Often mistaken for alexandrite, and even more rare than alexandrite, here’s an exceptionally uncommon blue garnet of intense hue whose color undergoes a dramatic change to purple when moved from fluorescent(or natural) light to incandescent light. Both color modes. Whether blue or purple, are very rich, saturated hues…not at all pale or washed out. The color under fluorescent light can range from blue to blue-green, but under incandescent light the color is always an intense, dark purple. These fabulous color-change blue color change garnets have only been found in a few places in the world in very limited quantity. Once such find was late in the nineteenth century in Russia, and we managed to secure a small supply of these quite uncommon gemstones during a recent visit to Russia. Like alexandrite and likewise rare Siberian demantoid garnet, the gems

Ancient Roman Glass Iridescent Squat Bottle / Flask -150 A.D.
A beautiful and charming ancient Roman glass bottle. Dating to the 2nd Century A.D. Constructed from translucent. Thick walled glass with flat, circular base, gently tapering body and wide, everted and ridged mouth. This bottle exhibits a pontil mark. Or glass-blowing scar, left behind when the piece was removed from the glass-blowing rod by the vitrearius. Or glassworker. The elegant shape of the vessel, unusual upturned base demonstrates the advanced glass-blowing skills achieved in the Late Roman Empire. The term'iridescence' is derived. In part, from the Greek rainbow goddess, Iris, messenger of the Gods. This stunning play of colours exhibited by some pieces of ancient glass is caused by minerals in the surrounding earth, forming tiny, flakey layers which build up on the surface of the glass and in turn cause the differential ... morerefraction of light, producing a magnificent rainbow of colours for the viewer. Height: 1 inches. Condition: Excellent condition. Unrestored. Age related encrustation. Provenance: Ex English private collection. You are bidding on the exact item pictured. Provided with a Certificate of Authenticity and Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. In Roman mythology. Felicitas(meaning"good luck" or"fortune" was the goddess or personification of good luck and success. The word felicitas. luck" is also the source of the word and name felicity. She played an important role in Rome's state religion during the empire. And was frequently portrayed on coins. She became a prominent ... moresymbol of the wealth and prosperity of the Roman Empire. Felicitas was unknown before the mid-2nd century BC. When a temple was dedicated to her in the Velabrum in the Campus Martius by Lucius Licinius Lucullus. Using booty from his 151–150 BC campaign in Spain. The temple was destroyed by a fire during the reign of Claudius and was never rebuilt. Another temple in Rome was planned by Julius Caesar and was erected after his death by Marcus Aemilius Lepidus on the site of the Curia Hostilia. Which had been restored by Lucius Cornelius Sulla but demolished by Caesar in 44 BC. This temple no longer existed by the time of Hadrian. And its site probably lies under the church of Santi Martina e Luca. Julia Maesa( 7 May ca. 165 AD–ca. 3 August 224) was a Roman citizen and daughter of Julius Bassianus. Priest of the sun god Heliogabalus. The patron god of Emesa(modern Homs) in the Roman province of Syria. Grandmother of both the Roman emperors Elagabalus and Alexander Severus. She figured prominently in the ascension of each to the title at the age of fourteen. Like her younger sister Julia Domna. She was among the most important women to exercise power behind the throne in th

Because this deity was assigned to each human when he was conceived or he was taken under his protection(Varro) or he has created us himself or has been created together with us(Apuleius) It's clear. That the Romans tried to integrate the Genius into their mythology. His parents should have been Jupiter and Gaea, who has born him, after Jupiter has created ... morehim when he was asleep. Others suggest that he was a son of the gods and the father of men. In any case all suggest that the Genii- there are many of them! take a middle position between the gods and men. As soon as a human being was born one or two Genii were assigned to him, a white good one and a black bad one. The good one gives him all of his good thoughts, the bad one the contrary. Which ever is the stronger one he is the one who forms the character of the man. Genii always appear at males. Within women there were the Junones. The Genii stayed with their person until his death when they gave him to the gods. According to others each man has only one Genius. The Genius handed down his man to the court and blamed him if he was lying or praised him when he kept the truth. According to the Genius the judgement was given to him because the Genius knew all of his secret thoughts. Even families, cities and countries had these guardian spirits. The Genius of Rome had a golden statue in the VIII regio. Everyone gave honour to his own Genius. Especially at his birthday when he gave offerings to him but only flowers, wine and incense, because it was not allowed to kill any a
LRG AE26 Ancient Roman Coin HERENNIA ETRUSCILLA with AN XII reverse Bull & Lion
Originally I thought this coin was Caligula's sister because I could see the text"USCILLA AVG" quite clearly on the front. Then. Upon further research I realized it was Herennia Etruscilla. My apologies if I got your hopes up in the Caligula auction description from yesterday. Still, this is a nice heavy and thick coin of Herennia with a dark patina and nice details remaining. I found a couple potential matches to compare it to on wildwinds: similar hair style) http:www.wildwinds.com/coins/bigpic.cgi?img=coins/ric/herennia_etruscilla/viminacium_AE28_SGI_4220v.jpg&ruler=.ric/herennia_etruscilla/i.html Herennia Etruscilla AE 28 of Viminacium. GALLIENUS 267AD Milan mint Rare Ancient Silver Roman Coin SALUS HEALTH Serpent
Item: i24553 Authentic Ancient Coin of: Gallienus- Roman Emperor: 253-268 A.D. Silver Antoninianus 22mm(2.72 grams) Milan mint 267-268 A.D. Reference: RIC 399[j] Cohen 937. IMP GALLIENVS P AVG. Radiate& cuirassed bust right SALVS AVGG. Salus standing right feeding snake held in her arms. You are bidding on the exact item pictured. Provided with a Certificate of Authenticity and Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. Salus(Health) a Goddess of the Romans. The same that was worshipped under the name of Hygiea by the Greeks, who feigned her to be the daughter of Asclepius and of Minerva. On a denarius of the Acilia family appears the head of the goddess and on the reverse a female standing with a serpent in her hand. The types of this divinity on imperial coins most frequently present to view a woman clothed in the stola; sometimes she is sitting. ... moreAt others standing; in others in a recumbent posture, with a serpent either on her right or her left arm in a quiescent state, rising in folds or entwined round an altar before her, and receiving food from a patera, which she holds in her extended hand. It is in this form(which was doubtless that of her statues and with these symbols) that she is exhibited on most coins on the imperial series from Galba to Maximianus. She had a celebrated temple at Rome, painted, it was said, by Q. Fabius, who thence was surnamed Pictor(the painter) There appears to be some affinity between this personification of Salus, when offering food in a patella to a serpent, and the Lanuvian virgin represented in the same act on coins bearing the head of Juno Sospita. The opinion also has the probability on the face of it, which refers the serpent on coins, where mention is made of Salus Augusti, or Augustorum, to Aesculapius and his daughter Hygaeia(or Salus) as deities of Health. Certain it is that when those sanitary divinities, and especially when Dea Salus, occur on coins of Emperors, they indicate that those princes were labouring at the time under some diseases; on which acco

He is a winged divine horse. Usually white in color. He was sired by Poseidon. In his role as horse-god, and foaled by the Gorgon Medusa. He was the brother of Chrysaor. Born at a single birthing when his mother was decapitated by Perseus. Greco-Roman poets write about his ascent to heaven after his birth ... moreand his obeisance to Zeus. King of the gods, who instructed him to bring lightning and thunder from Olympus. Friend of the Muses, Pegasus is the creator of Hippocrene. The fountain on Mt. Helicon. He was captured by the Greek hero Bellerophon near the fountain Peirene with the help of Athena and Poseidon. Pegasus allows the hero to ride him to defeat a monster. The Chimera, before realizing many other exploits. His rider, however, falls off his back trying to reach Mount Olympus. Zeus transformed him into the constellation Pegasus and placed him in the sky. Hypotheses have been proposed regarding its relationship with the Muses. The gods Athena. Poseidon. Zeus. Apollo. And the hero Perseus. The symbolism of Pegasus varies with time. Symbol of wisdom and especially of fame from the Middle Ages until the Renaissance. He became one symbol of the poetry and the creator of sources in which the poets come to draw inspiration, particularly in the 19th century. Pegasus is the subject of a very rich iconography, especially through the ancient Greek pottery and paintings and sculptures of the Renaissance. Believed by the ancient Greeks and Romans to be the divine personification of the World Ocean. An enormous river encircling the world. Strictly speaking. Oceanus was the ocean- stream at the Equator in which floated the habitable hemisphere(οἰκουμένη. Oikoumene) In Greek mythology. This world-ocean was personified as ... morea Titan. A son of Ouranos and Gaea. In Hellenistic and Roman mosaics. This Titan was often depicted as having the upper body of a muscular man with a long beard and horns(often represented as the claws of a crab) and the lower body of a serpent(cf. Typhon) On a fragmentary archaic vessel of circa 580 BC(British Museum 1971.11-1.1) Among the gods arriving at the wedding of Peleus and the sea-nymph Thetis. Is a fish-tailed Oceanus, with a fish in one hand and a serpent in the other, gifts of bounty and prophecy. In Roman mosaics, such as that from Bardo( illustration below) he might carry a steering-oar and cradle a ship. Some scholars believe that Oceanus originally represented all bodies of salt water. Including the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The two largest bodies known to the ancient Greeks. However, as geography became more accurate, Oceanus came to represent the stranger, more unknown waters of the Atlantic Ocean(also called the" Ocean Sea" While the newcomer of a later generation, Poseidon. It is frequently carried by Virtus. Particularly on early representations. It is also sometimes carried by Mars. Or Roma. Or the Emperor. Giving them the aura of courage. In Roman statuary. The weapon is cradled in the bearer's left arm or on Trajan's column, ... morefor example, it is stuck into the left side of the officer's chest band. Existing examples on statuary show that the Parazonium's scabbard shape is a direct copy of the few existing Greek Parazoniums on display at various Greek museums. The weapon's hilt, grip, pommel are not copies of the Greek style. The pommel cap is either an eagle's head or a bi-lobed pommel. The details of the hand grip on the statues are no longer clear after 2,000 years. The guard, contrary to some reports are authentic and are a rather theatrical"S" shape with inset detail. The Roman Parazonium blade tended to be leaf shape and approximately 15"19" long. The use of the Roman parazonium tended to be somewhat theatrical in the sense that it was a mark of rank and it was used to rally the troops. It appears the normal procedure was for the officer to exchange his parazonium for a Gladius or a Spatha if he was directly threatened during a battle. Virtus. Valour. The Roman personification of Valour was represented helmeted with spear and sword and standing with right foot on helmet. There was a golden statue of her at Rome which was melted by Alaric. Women of ancient Rome were more inclined to wear multiple rings of varied materials and designs on their hands without the constraints of social classes. Roman Glass Roman jewelry has been described as an amalgamation of Eastern and Etruscan jewelry styles. Combining the use of colored stones favored in the East with manipulated goldwork typical of Etruscan jewelry. The Romans greatly favored the use of stone and glass in their jewelry, and expanded the Hellenistic tradition by foc
