Rare Ancient Roman Era Silver Zoomorphic Finger Ring Circa: 2nd Century
Genuine and original conserved European Roman Era(2nd Century AD) S ilver Alloy Zoomorphic Ring. The bezel of this rare example is formed from a trio of silver alloy strands cast as snakes, two serpent heads are observed with scale decoration seen. The ring has received light cleaning however. Most of the original silver oxide patina remains to the reverse of the bezel and frame. The zoomorphic bezel details are complete with the two snake heads remaining intact. Surface striation or scratch marks are observed and are in keeping with the age of the ring: UK size T. The"bezel" or face of the ring ... morewas originally engraved with a classic starburst design. In hand, it is possible to see the"Shadow" of the original starburst, or"Stellata Cross" engraving. The starburst design was co-opted by the Christians some time in the third to fourth century, metamorphosing into the"Stellata Cross" It's oftentimes difficult to distinguish between the pagan(or non-religious) starburst which was a popular Roman motif for centuries, and the"Stellata Cross" which became even more popular with post-Constantine Christian Rome. The starburst/cross is difficult to discern in these digital images, but in hand it is fairly easy to discern, especially at oblique angles. The ring as one can see was heavily worn. In addition to the fact that the bezel has been worn almost smooth. The sides and back portions of the band have been worn very thin as well. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner:perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations.
