Ancient Egyptian Glass Mosaic Inlay Ptolemaic / Early Roman Period - 100 BC
An attractive and decorative ancient Egyptian glass inlay. Dating to the Ptolemaic to early Roman period 100 B.C. 100 A.D. A wonderful glass inlay. Depicting the scales of a fish in motion, coloured in beautiful polychrome red, yellow and brown, with the dorsal fin a distinctive dark blue. Tiles of this form have been found exclusively in Egypt. And are widely renowned as being of the highest quality, building on a glass making industry that was already centuries old. The technique involved a series of various coloured glass strips and canes being carefully moulded into their required shapes before the construction was then placed into a kiln, whereupon the individual elements were fused with the backing glass to become one subject. This technique was a painstakingly labour intensive process requiring a high level of skill and knowledge. ... moreIt flourished over only a brief period of time before the mastery was lost. It survives only in these vibrant artefacts; beautiful vestiges of an art form that was as well regarded in its own time as it is in the modern day. Height: 2 5/8 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. private collection. Please note; this is a genuine ancient Egyptian glass inlay. Ancient Roman Solid Silver Ring with Orange Glass Inlay– Very Large 400-500 AD Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. This very impressive ancient Roman silver ring boasts a timelessly elegant design. Is fully intact and is of excellent condition. Its band is broad, bears an impeccable symmetrical form and is incredibly smooth all around, making for a very comfortable fit when worn today. On each side of its bezel are a set of three decorative silver knobs. Its deep, cup-type bezel holds securely within itself the most beautiful orange glass inlay. The Romans used glass extensively to imitate precious stones such as emerald, sardonyx, and amethyst, since glass was much easier to carve. This shade of orange would have been used to imitate the likes of a precious amber gemstone. Because amber both contains plant& animal life. It was thought to be a vessel of eternal youth. Historically, amber is tied to preservation. Roman ladies of the court played with amber, holding it in their hands and stroking it, as contact with amber was thought to guarantee a youthful look. Amber amulets and rings were worn to enhance fertility and served as a magnet to attract joy t

This large and magnificent ancient Roman silver alloy ring bears a broad and smooth hoop which expands and opens up into two parts at its shoulders. And is soldered firm to the back of its bezel(this craftsmanship can be viewed very well on the inside, at the back of the bezel) As additional reinforcement, the ancient craftsman has added a flat piece of linear etched silver alloy strip attaching the side of the bezel to the shoulders of the hoop. Its deep, square shaped shield-type bezel forms a secure frame for its rich, royal blue glass inlay. The Romans greatly favoured the use of stone and glass in their jewellery. And expanded the Hellenistic tradition by focusing on the visual effects multi-coloured bits of stone and glass could achieve in their own right. The Romans used glass extensively to imitate precious stones such as emerald, sardonyx, and amethyst, since glass was much easier to carve. Here, this deep red inlay was made to represent the likes of a precious ruby or garnet gemstone. A layer of white patina is retained on its surface. Anc

Ancient Roman Large Silver Alloy Ring Green Glass Inlay 100-300 AD
Ancient Roman Large Silver Alloy Ring Green Glass Inlay 100-300 AD Apart from gold and other precious metals. This large and handsome ancient Roman silver alloy ring has a broad and smooth all over hoop. Which opens up into two parts at the shoulders, and soldered firm to the back of its bezel. As additional reinforcement, the ancient craftsman has added a flat, arrow-tipped piece of silver alloy strip, attaching the side of the bezel to the shoulders of the hoop. Its square shaped. Shield-type bezel is turned in slightly at the uppermost tip, forming a secure frame for its rich, dark green glass inlay. This ring is of excellent condition, is fully intact and is just as bold and eye-catching an adornment when worn today, as it was then. A dark, natural patina is retained in areas, testament to its age and authenticity. The Romans greatly favoured the use of stone and glass in their jewellery and used it extensively to imitate precious stones such as emerald. Sardonyx, and amethyst, since glass was much easier to carve. In this case this beautiful deep green hue was chosen to represent the likes of a precious emerald gemstone. The emerald has been a gem of fascinat
