A wonderful and rare pair of ancient Chinese Northern Zhou. Polychrome terracotta figures, dating to approximately 557- 581 A.D. The flat-backed warriors shown standing tall with legs set apart. They both wear close fitting helmets and clutch oblong shields to their chests, their left hands pierced, perhaps to hold spears or other implements in antiquity. Here is a collection of seven pieces of Cliff Dweller pottery shards. Which is part of my great–grandmother’s extensive Native American collection. The largest is a piece from a jug or bowl and measures 3 ½” by approximately 5” She wrote on it“Pottery– Cliff Dwellers. Very old, from W.G.P. The second largest piece measures 2” by 3 ¼” and is numbered 17. It looks to be the portion where a handle was attached. Two others of the same color are also numbered on the back#18 and#19. I believe these to be all from the same item. The last red one has a design on both sides. And is numbered#29. The last two are grey in color with black paint and measure 1” by 3 ½” and 1 ¼” by 2” respectively. These pieces are all authentically old and were obtained legally. But we weren’t able to find anything exactly as complicated as this 25.5 cm tall by 28 cm wide(10 x 11 ½ inches) pot. The large elephant head handle has a rider and there are ten dancing figures around the body. You will see around the rim three loops, which were used to tie a cover over the opening. We found similar examples of ancient Khmer Brown Pottery that was used to store lime. We were only able to find one pot that had an elephant head handle like this one; however, it did not have any of the complicated designs or figural appliqués that are on this pot. I believe the Khmer Pottery pot in this auction is ancient and important. I found examples of this type of pottery going back to the 15 th century Angkor Wat period. It remarkable that there are no damages or restorations to this pot. There is wear to the dark. Almost black, glaze that reveals the redware pottery, but that's it. If you do any research on the internet looking for ancient Khmer pottery. You will find that examples can sell for high prices. I can only imagine what this rare pot is truly worth. A very rare ancient Chinese terracotta figure of a dwarf. Dating to the Tang Dynasty, approximately 618- 907 A.D. The short. Stocky figure wearing tunic, with peaked head-dress, remnants of red pigment in places. His face with a strained grimace, his right hand held at his chest. In reference to this figure. Schloss writes: These dwarfs. Not more than three feet tall, were punished by nature and frequently misused and mistreated by the ruling society. Most of them were brought to the palaces of China from all parts of Asia. Some were given to the rulers as tribute. Some were sold by unscrupulous merchants as slaves. Emperor Wu Ti(502-550) was fond of dwarfs and employed them in his palace as servants or entertainers. They used black lead-based glazes in geometric and floral designs. This beautiful example has a deep black band with band of floral designs and central band in tondo. Roman pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the ... morefirst excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. Authentic ANCIENT Precolumbian effigy shoe Pot - Guatemala - pottery, ceramics
this is really is a large and nicely made pot with few non-detracting ancient edge loss This is the information that came with the pot: Mayan native. Pre-Columbian-era polychrome ceramic ceremonial shoe pot. Originally purchased in Guatemala City, Guatemala. This pot was located in Lake Amatitlan by divers. It, along with others, some of which can be found in Guatemalan museums, had been cast in by the Mayans for ceremonial purposes. Diameter 8 38 inches. Height 5 14 inches. Bowl has swirls. Circles, and raised ridges made from outside by a stick and the potter's fingers. It also has a raised, pinched decoration surrounding the pot's midsection. This vessel has a handle at the top. This type of pot is extremely rare. I have only seen two or three in person or in pictures or in museums. Painted brown. No repainting. There are also ... moreparts of the pot where one can see it lay on its side in the water and became more darkly colored because of the limestone deposits from the silt or mud. This pot is estimated to be from 550-900 CE(AD) The Late Mayan Classic Period. Item in almost perfect condition since it was underwater. Ceramic is"thicker. There are no cracks. There is one small place of ancient damage to the rim. There are no missing pieces or gaps. See pictures. Dennis Hembrough has evaluated this piece and is a surface collector in Illinois and has collected for more than 50 years. He is a member of the Illinois Archeological Society.
