CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Jar/Vase. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Zhou Dynasty. Spring and Autumn Period(770 to 476 B.C. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 140 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) at bowl; 94 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at top lip. Height: 98 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. As well there is an assortment of tiny scuffs and abrasions which one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. Considering that the typical such specimen is recovered shattered into shards, this specimen is truly in remarkable condition. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative

Huge Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Pottery Lokopala Guardian Figure - 900 A.D.
A spectacular. Large and imposing, ancient Chinese Tang dynasty terracotta figure of a heavenly guardian(Lokapala) dating to around 900 AD. The powerful warrior is depicted with great authority. The left hand resting on hip and the right held out in front, likely holding a spear or other implement in antiquity, now long since perished. ANCIENT ANTIQUE ISLAMIC POTTERY FROM SYRIA MIDDLE EASTERN CERAMICS
Raqqa Revisited: Ceramics of Ayyubid Syria" By Marilyn Jenkins-Madina. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. DISCUSSION: The city of Raqqa. Situated on the Euphrates River in present-day Syria, had its first Islamic flowering in the late 8th century, when it was the residence of the legendary Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid. Raqqa experienced a resurgence during the late 12th and early 13th centuries, but was destroyed in 1265. Little is mentioned about Raqqa in Muslim sources after its medieval renaissance, but interest in the city was kindled in the West at the end of the 19th century, when curiosity about the Islamic world was inspired by travel to the Middle East and by the vast travel literature that came out of the region. Interest was also fueled by the translation into French and English of the Arabic ... moreliterary classic The Thousand and One Nights, in which Harun al-Rashid was a central character. As this collection of stories was becoming a best seller in the West. Ceramic objects were being brought out from Raqqa that dealers and auction houses were connecting to this very caliph, and a buying spree for the ware ensued. Among the wealthy collectors who developed a passion for these objects were two important donors to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Louisine and Horace Havemeyer, and eventually a large number of ceramic objects from their collection were given to the Museum, helping to make the Metropolitan’s holdings of this ware the world’s most important. This volume explores the ceramic objects unearthed in Raqqa in the first quarter of the 20th century; Museum Curator Emerita of Islamic Art Marilyn Jenkins-Madina describes the dramatic journey of these ceramics from their discovery in Raqqa to the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5”x11.5” 260 pages, 308 illustrations(119 in full color) dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. Clean, new condition. QUESTIONS about this item? Ancient Roman Pottery Bowl II-Earthenware-Roman Empire-100-200 AD!
ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS Artifacts. Antiques& Fine Collectables Ancient Roman Empire Pottery Earthenware Bowl II Roman Empire c. 100- 200 AD Original. Authentic, and Extremely RARE! This ancient Earthenware Bowl dates to the Roman Empire and is from my personal collection. It is a museum quality example of an ancient Roman terracotta bowl that would have been used in daily life or to hold offerings to the Gods or as ritual tomb object that would hold offerings to the Gods. This 100% original and authentic bowl dates to the Roman Empire circa 100-200 AD and was unearthened in Northern Italy. I purchased it in the late 1960s from a museum that had decommissioned it. This unglazed earthenware bowl measures approximately 3.0" in diameter x 2.5" tall(76 mm x 63 mm) and weighs just 3.2 oz. or 92 grams. The bowl has a footed base that ... morecan be best seen in photo# 6. This is a unique piece of ancient pottery that you can add to your collection. It is truely Museum quality and is Extremely RARE! It would also make a super Gift! Condition: This fired earthenware bowl is in excellent condition for its age. It is solid with no cracks or repairs. It does have one small chip on the side of the bowl that you can see best in photo# 3. It still has the original earthen deposits encrusted on its inside and outside-as would be expected for an item that was buried for 2.000 years. This natural process does not affect the solid integrity or beauty of the ancient bowl, in fact, they help to date this artifact as an authentic piece of fine pottery that is very, very old! I have examined this piece under 10x magnification and it shows no signs of modern tool marks-only human hands worked the clay to make this ancient bowl. I also examined it under Black Light and found no signs of modern repairs. This bowl has not been Oxford Thermoluminescenece(TL) tested to determine its exact age. As that testing cost over $1,200-several times the value of this bowl. But I assure you this ancient bowl is 100% authentic and original and will
Lot ancient Roman artifacts pottery and a glass shard and part of oillamp
Roman terra pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort.
