A few production blemishes(warts, dimples, pimples and pits) typical of hand-crafted porcelain of the late Ming/early Qing Dynasties. DETAIL: A very beautiful. Massively sized, hand painted“famille rose” style porcelain teapot so wonderfully characteristic of the very popular export Qing Dynasty porcelain china. The particular style was extremely popular both in England as well as the USA during the 1800’s. This huge piece(it would make about fifteen or twenty cups) is a wonderful example of this very famous produce. It features two splendid depictions of daily life in nineteenth century China. The overall condition of the pot is very good. However it came do us with an impact chip in the side of the bowl, upper, near the head of one standing figure, with cracks radiating both upward and downward from there. Our conservator repaired the chip. And then stabilized and strengthened the damage(including the cracks) from the inside of the bowl. This particular piece measures about 19cm high by 10.7cm wide or 7.5” high by 4 3/8” wide at its largest points. The body of the piece displays a ribbed pattern which was the result of a cord-impressions when the piece was made. The piece is largely a dark gray in color. Roman pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the ... morefirst excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. It is repaired with some crude in-painting at the neck and some other areas of small losses. There are various chips and wear to the slip decoration. Below is pasted a description from a more elaborate example from a London auction in 2006. This piece came from Oriental Antique and Art out of Canoga Park. The use of unglazed painted decoration has its roots in an ancient pre-Islamic Central Asian tradition. Of which there are some important surviving examples, the most famous being the so-called Merv Vase, which was discovered in 1960 in a Buddhist monastery in south-eastern Gyaur-Kala. The decoration can be compared to that found on architecture from Gujerat through the Swat Valley to the Hindu Kush and Central Asia(Kalter, J. Jade and bronze ranging in date from 3400 BCE in the Neolithic Period through the Eastern Han Dynasty in 220 CE. The objects are both decorative and utilitarian, reflecting advances in technology and ideological shifts in ancient China. The ancient Chinese belief that earthly goods must accompany the deceased into the afterlife sustained the production of many ceramic and bronze containers to hold food, grains and wine. The exhibition features a variety of such containers, including a painted pottery jar from the Neolithic Period and a pair ... moreof bronze tripod vessels from the Late Shang-Early Western Zhou Dynasty. A number of purely decorative pieces are included in this exhibit, including the figure of a crouching feline made of bronze with gilding, and gold and turquoise inlays. Jade carvings, particularly those of pig-dragons, were popular in the Neolithic period. Often associated with burial rights as religious amulets, pig-dragons were sometimes placed on top of burial mounds and altars, as well as within burial mounds. The artwork included in this exhibition reflects drastic changes in human history from the stone age to the bronze age and the effects of new forms of technology developed by the Chinese, says Barry Stern, director of Hillwood Art Museum. Up for bid this awesome ancient corrugated southwestern Fremont Indian coil form pottery gathering storage utilitarian pot.Measuring aprox. 4 1/2 inches tall and 6 1/4 inches wide with a 4 1/2 inch mouth opening, I believe this one was for gathering, because of the piece on the side as shown in photos would have been for some type of handle, some of it is broken off and the other one on the other side is gone but you can see where it once was attached, It does have issues as shown and has been repaired but appears to be very solid repair.It has some fantastic unworn detail, of corrugated coils, almost a ruffle pattern, it is outstanding! It was made by the Fremont Indians, which resided from 750 A.D. to 1300 A.D. when they like the Anasazi Indians just up and left in what appeard, to be a hurry! these people were scattered groups of hunters ... moreand farmers, the Fremont's had unique traits that would distinguish them from other groups in unique ways, they had a particular way of making baskets using a one-Rod-and bundle basketry construction style it was very unique and different from the Anasazi group, Second they had a unique"Fremont" moccasin style constructed from the hock of deer or mountain sheep, they were very different from Anasazi, and the last and most major artifact category trait that made them different is the thin gray, coil pottery, which is most often used to identify archaeological sites as Fremont. The pottery is not very different from that made by other southwestern groups, nor are it's vessel forms and designs distinct- what distinguishes Fremont pottery from other ceramic types is the material from which it is constructed, variations in temper, the granular rock or sand added to wet clay to insure even drying and to prevent cracking,have been used to identify Fremont types.it is a very thin pottery and different from others which are much thicker, and they are also known for there coil and corrugated or pinched style, this one along with most are found in caves.
