Rare Ancient Greek Marble/Alabaster Bowl. C.500 BC or Earlier Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Ancient Greek Marble/Alabaster Bowl. C.500 BC or Earlier This is a superb ancient Hellenistic marble bowl. Likely made in classical Greece or one of it’s colonies around the Mediterranean. Sometime before around 400 B.C. 6" wide by 3" tall and weighing 556 gr(just over 1lb) It is in a mastoid(or mammatus) shape. Named for its resemblance to a breast. For marble. It is also a very thin walled vessel a t less than 1cm thick. There is an obvious repair to the rim where a section has been broken and re-stuck. And the piece has also been very professionally restored from 5 large pieces. There are some mineral deposits to the surface, and 8 small to very small chips around the rim. The photos have all been taken with the same lighting. But ... morefrom different angles, which shows the translucent nature and structure of the material. Please here for an assessment of this piece: This does say to take the bowl to the British Museum for verification– but the Antiques Roadshow is in my area on 27 th June. And I will take it there instead if it has not been sold by then. Please see other examples of ancient marble/alabaster bowls here: Although these are identified as Bactrian. The daughter of Macedonian king Philip II of Macedon, by his Thessalian wife or concubine, Nicesipolis, from Pherae.History links her to three of the most powerful men in Macedon: daughter of King Philip II, half sister of Alexander the Great and wife of Cassander. Thessalonike was born around 352 or 345 BC. To commemorate the birth of his daughter. Which fell on the same day as the armies of Macedon and Thessalian league won the significant battle of Crocus Field in Thessaly ... moreover the Phocians, King Philip is said to have proclaimed, Let her be called victory in Thessaly" In the Greek language her name is made up of two words Thessaly and nike, that translates into'Thessalian Victory' Her mother did not live long after her birth and upon her death Thessalonike appears to have been brought up by her stepmother Olympias. In memory of her close friend, Nicesipolis, the queen took Thessalonike to be raised as her own daughter. Thessalonike was, by far, the youngest child in the care of Olympias. Her interaction with her older brother Alexander would have been minimal, as he was under the tutelage of Aristotle in"The Gardens Of Midas" when she was born, and at the age of six or seven when he left on his Persian expedition. She was only nineteen when Alexander, king of the then most known world, died. Thus favored, she spent her childhood in the queen’s quarters, to whose fortunes she attached herself when the latter returned to Macedon in 317 BC, and with whom she took refuge, along with the rest of the royal family, in the fortress of Pydna, on the advance of Cassander in 315 BC. The fall of Pydna and the execution of her stepmoth

VINTAGE ANCIENT GREEK MEDAL COIN SOLID SILVER ARETHUSA SICILY DOLPHINS & CHARIOT
VINTAGE BEAUTIFUL ANCIENT GREEK COIN SOLID SILVER. ARETHUSA FROM SICILY. COIN MEASURES: 37MM ACROSS& WEIGHT 18.15 GRAMS. COIN IS A COPY. GOOD CONDITION. SEE PHOTO. Arethusa is the nymph of a spring of the same name at Syracuse on the island of Sicily. Her spring is located on the small island of Ortygia. Just off the coast and connected to the rest of the city by a causeway in antiquity; it is now built into an enclosed pool with high sides, and in the pool papyrus is planted, and white ducks are kept. Before it was enclosed it must have poured almost directly into the Sea; even now the beach is just a short distance over the wall. Arethusa's legend is Greek. As the colony at Syracuse was founded by emigrants from Corinth, Greece in about 734 BCE. In the tale Arethusa was a nymph of Elis(located in the western Peloponnese) and a friend ... moreof. And like Her a virgin huntress who couldn't care less about men. She was extraordinarily beautiful but considered it rather a nuisance; She much preferred the wild woods. One hot day, Arethusa stopped to bathe in the River Alpheus, but as She was so doing the God of the river saw Her and became enamoured of Her. She refused His overtures; and when He wouldn't take no for an answer She fled. He chased Her for some time, but when She eventually tired and feared He would catch Her, She prayed to Artemis to save Her. Artemis did just that: She carried Her off in a mist all the way to Sicily, where She became the spring of Arethusa. Alpheus, however, was not so easily foiled, and it is said that He journeyed under the sea to Her new spring, where His waters mingled with Hers. It was professed in ancient times that a flower or cup dropped into the Alpheus River in Greece would flow under the ocean and eventually pop up in the spring of Arethusa all that distance away. The River Alpheus does at one point flow into the ground, perhaps explaining the connection the Greeks believed it had with Arethusa's distant spring. At any rate Arethusa's spring on Ortygia was

Wealth of the Ancient World Hunt Brothers Fab Pix Etruscan Roman Greek Hellenic
Wealth of the Ancient World. The Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt Collections. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 329 pages. Publisher: Kimbell Art Museum in association with Summa Publications; 1984) This book offers an unparalleled opportunity to examine the art. Attitudes and aspirations of classical antiquity- an age far removed from that of our own, but one that still impresses itself strongly upon ours, socially and culturally. The exhibition spans more than a thousand years, extending from the archaic period in Greece and Etruria through the rich style of Sicily and South Italy to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This epoch witnessed the shift in power from Athens to Rome and the final triumph of the East with the establishment of the new capital in Constantinople. As the exhibition will demonstrate, the ancients converted even their ... moremost prosaic form of wealth- their coinage- into objects of great refinement and artistry. Of the 112 coins selected from the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt- considered now one of the finest in private hands- many are notably for their rarity, condition or historical importance, but almost all exhibit qualities that distinguish them as works of art. It is well-known that Greek vases are among the greatest artistic legacy of antiquity. Their decoration derives from everyday life as well as from the rich tradition of Greek drama and literature. The fifteen examples that comprise the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt. All of which will be exhibited, include both black and red-figured pieces of Corinthian, Attic and South Italian workshops. Bronze enjoyed a great importance in antiquity as the primary medium for"pure" sculpture, though today we can also appreciate the imaginative decoration of utilitarian objects in bronze. Both aspects of bronze artistry are reflected in the thirty-eight pieces of the William Herbert Hunt Collection. Among them are acknowledged masterworks of portraiture and small statuary. At the first public showing of the majority of ancient works
