VERY RARE AND SCARCE SILVER COIN In Greek mythology. Satyrs( Greek: Σάτυροι. Satyroi) are a troop of male companions of Pan and Dionysus— satyresses" were a late invention of poets— that roamed the woods and mountains. In myths they are often associated with pipe-playing. The satyrs' chief was Silenus. A minor deity associated(like Hermes and Priapus) with fertility. These characters can be found in the only complete remaining satyr play. Cyclops, by Euripides. And the fragments of Sophocles' The Tracking Satyrs( Ichneutae) The satyr play was a short. Lighthearted tailpiece performed after each trilogy of ... moretragedies in Athenian festivals honoring Dionysus. There is not enough evidence to determine whether the satyr play regularly drew on the same myths as those dramatized in the tragedies that preceded. The groundbreaking tragic playwright Aeschylus is said to have been especially loved for his satyr plays. But none of them have survived. Attic painted vases depict mature satyrs as being strongly built with flat noses. Large pointed ears, long curly hair, and full beards. With wreaths of vine or ivy circling their balding heads. Satyrs often carry the thyrsus: the rod of Dionysus tipped with a pine cone. Satyrs acquired their goat-like aspect through later Roman. Conflation with Faunus. A carefree Italic nature spirit of similar characteristics and identified with the Greek god Pan. Hence satyrs are most commonly described in Latin literature as having the upper half of a man and the lower half of a goat. With a goat's tail in place of the Greek tradition of horse-tailed satyrs; therefore, satyrs became nearly identical with fauns. Mature satyrs are often depicted in Roman art with goat's horns. While juveniles are often shown with bony nubs on their foreheads. Saty

Antique 18thC 1½ct Pink Tourmaline Ancient Greek Roman “Emerald” Gem of Rainbows
Antique Genuine Natural Russian One and One-Half Carat Antique Brightly Colored Oval Cut Tourmaline. CLASSIFICATION: Tourmaline Oval Cabochon. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 18th Century. SIZE: Length: 8mm. Width: 6mm. Depth: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 1.46 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstone as pendant. DETAIL: Tourmaline occurred in many of the ancient mines that yielded precious gemstones in the ancient Roman world 2.000 years ago, however it was mistaken for(and thus called) emerald or topaz. Tourmaline was correctly identified and described in the ancient world by Theophrastus of Ancient Greece(student and successor of Plato and Aristotle) in 314 B.C. The name“tourmaline” came from the Celanese word"turmali, which means"mixed" Bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties were called"turmali" ... moreparcels. In ancient mythology, tourmaline was found in all colors because it traveled along a rainbow and gathered all the rainbow's colors. You’ll likely never. Ever see a gemstone as unique as this. A large brightly colored and textured tourmaline gemstone from Siberia, the Ural Mountains of Russia. Very handsome and quite exceptional in character, this striking gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cut cabochon by an 18th century Russian artisan. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a bright and colorful character. It is a nice quality tourmaline by 18th century standards. The gemstone would be more or less transparent except for the fact that it is so thick. Given the thick cut, it is more toward translucent than transparent. By today’s standards it is not a high quality tourmaline– though its origin makes it nonetheless extraordinary. But by 18th century standards, this was a very desirable and expensive gemstone. To casual observation if seems simply a large, beautiful, extraordinary, brightly colored tourmaline. But of course very close scrutiny, especially under high magnification, will reveal lots of si

Provided with a Certificate of Authenticity and Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. A nymph in Greek mythology is a female minor nature deity typically associated with a particular location or landform. Different from gods. Nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing; their amorous freedom sets them apart from the restricted and chaste wives and daughters of the Greek polis. They are believed to dwell in mountains and groves. By springs ... moreand rivers, and also in trees and in valleys and cool grottoes. Although they would never die of old age nor illness. And could give birth to fully immortal children if mated to a god, they themselves were not necessarily immortal, and could be beholden to death in various forms. Charybdis and Scylla were once nymphs. Other nymphs. Always in the shape of young maidens, were part of the retinue of a god. Such as Dionysus. Hermes. Or Pan. Or a goddess, generally the huntress Artemis. Nymphs were the frequent target of satyrs. They are frequently associated with the superior divinities: the huntress Artemis; the prophetic Apollo; the reveller and god of wine. Dionysus; and rustic gods such as Pan and Hermes. Nymphs are personifications of the creative and fostering activities of nature. Most often identified with the life-giving outflow of springs: as Walter Burkert(Burkert 1985:III.3.3) remarks. The idea that rivers are gods and springs divine nymphs is deeply rooted not only in poetry but in belief and ritual; the worship of these deities is limited only by the fact that they are inseparably identified with a specific locality. History Foundation and earliest history It was the first Greek ... moresettlement on this part of the island and was a strategic outpost just outside the eastern boundary of the Carthaginian-controlled west. Thucydides says it was the only Greek city on this coast of Sicily, 1] which must however be understood with reference only to independent cities; Mylae. Which was also on the north coast, and certainly of Greek origin, being a dependency of Zancle(modern Messina) All authorities agree that Himera was a colony of Zancle. But Thucydides tells us that, with the emigrants from Zancle, who were of Chalcidic origin, were mingled a number of Syracusan exiles. The consequence of which was, that, though the institutions( νόμιμα) of the new city were Chalcidic. Its dialect had a mixture of Doric. The foundation of Himera is placed subsequent to that of Mylae(as. From their relative positions, might naturally have been expected) both by Strabo and Scymnus Chius: its date is not mentioned by Thucydides. But Diodorus tells us that it had existed 240 years at the time of its destruction by the Carthaginians. Which would fix its first settlement in 648 BCE. 2] We have very little information as to its early history: an obscure notice

Ancient Greek hand made amphora (replica)
Greek style hand made ceramic amphora 23cm. Condition-NEW- Color blue-gold 24k.
Vintage Solid 830 European Silver Dish/Tray/Plaque - Ancient Greek Design.
Up for auction is a very unusual vintage plate! The plate is about 5.5 inches in diameter and a 66.8 grams. It's solid 830 silver as marked on the back. Overall it's in good vintage condition. The silver has tarnished over the years. But we don't see any big dents or dings. The motive is probably an ancient 4th-century BCE Greek merchant ship that was found off the coast of Kyrenia. Cyprus in 1967. The engraving along the bottom reads: ΑΡΧΙΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΟΣ ΚΥΠΡΟΥ ΧΡΥΣΟΣΤΟΜΟΣ In Greek. Which translates to ARCHBISHOP OF CYPRUS CHRYSOSTOMOS The archbishop' CHRYSOSTOMOS' was archbishop in the 60's-70's. We're guessing this is a memento plate sold around that time. If you have any questions. Please let us know!
