Istros, Thrace, Eagle Grabbing Dolphin Dioscuri Silver 1/4 Drachm ANCIENT GREEK
The Eagle Is Coming In For A Landing. Or Maybe It's Fishing I Think! Obverse: Two male heads facing. The right inverted Reverse: ISTPIH above sea eagle flying left. Grasping dolphin in talons, Q below Ex. VAuctions Cf. SNG BMC 250 BMC 14 SNG Cop 200(all var. theta below) Silver 1/4 Drachm 4th Century BC IstrosMint 11mm 1.31g Up for auction is a sweet sweet coin from Istros. In Thrace. Istros was a Melesian colony on the edge of the Black Sea. Settled in 657 B.C. Colonists began making some of the earliest forms of ancient money, which included cast arrowhead money, and the four-spoked cast IST city coins which followed. This is right about 500 B.C. almost the beginning of time in numismatics. We have arrived at a special place in history. This beautiful and ANCIENT silver 1/4 drachm has an unusual obverse portrait which to this day continues ... moreto stimulate conversation and fascinate collectors and archaeologists alike. Two faces, one right side up, the other upside down. Some feel this might represent the sunrise and sunset. Others lay claim to the notion this image actually represents the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux. Two sides of an individual entity? The faces of mystery, one up.one down. You decide. The reverse of this authentic ancient relic is a design that speaks directly to the seafaring residents of Istros. An eagle plunging down out of the sky and grasping a dolphin with it's talons. Really spectacular! Look fror a Q just below the dolphin. While unusual, and seemingly unique to this city, this reverse design is also featured on coins issued from Sinope, across the Black Sea from Istros and also a colony of Miletos. I love Sinope. This coin was issued during the 4th Century B.C. I got it from VAuctions. The edge is nicely toned and interestingly worn by time, a sure giveaway to this beauty's authenticity. For me at least. It's a nice enough coin! This coin is ancient. Authentic, guaranteed, will be delivered quickly and will be accepted as a return gladly. You can't go wrong here! Step

ANCIENT GOLD JEWELRY ROMAN GREEK ETRUSCAN -MORETTI COLLECTION - Dallas Museum
Ancient Gold Jewelry at the Dallas Museum of Art” By Barbara Depper-Lippitz. Published by the Dallas Museum of Art in 1996. DISCUSSION: Prized for its beauty. Its workability, and its resistance to corrosion or decay, gold in the ancient world was, as Pindar put it, Zeus's child. Nothing erodes or consumes it. It conquers the mind of man and is the most powerful of possessions. Indeed, this lack of erosion means the 105 art objects shown in color photographs in this catalog are little changed from when they were created some two millennia ago. The Dallas Museum of Art acquired the Moretti collection of Mediterranean gold jewelry in the 1990s—one of the last significant collections in private hands. Among the superbly crafted gold and jeweled ornaments here are 4th-century BC Greek ear pendants with delicate figures of Eros dangling, Etruscan ... morefiligreed bracelets from the 7th century BC, and a pair of abstracted twist bracelets from 1st-century AD Rome that look contemporary” DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 8”x10” 150 pages, color illustrations. FEMALE BEAUTY & FASHIONS IN ANCIENT GREEK SCULKPTURE & ART -BEAUTIFUL WOMEN
Greek Beauty” By Berenice Geoffroy-Schneiter. Published in New York by Assouline in 2003. DISCUSSION: From a Pompeian fresco of Sappho to a terracotta bust of Aphrodite. And from a pure gold wreath to an ivory and bronze mirror fashioned in the 16th century BC, the art of the ancient Greeks seems as elegant and profound as ever. Many of the color plates seen here reveal the fascination that the female form held for Greek sculptors” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 6.5”x9” 79 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. Antique 18thC 1½ct Yellow Tourmaline Ancient Greek Roman “Emerald” Rainbow Gem
Antique Eighteenth Century Genuine Natural Russian One and One-Half Carat Yellow Oval Cut Tourmaline Cabochon. CLASSIFICATION: Tourmaline Oval Cabochon. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 18th Century. SIZE: Length: 8mm. Width: 6mm. Depth: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 1.57 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Tourmaline occurred in many of the ancient mines that yielded precious gemstones in the ancient Roman world 2.000 years ago, however it was mistaken for(and thus called) emerald or topaz. Tourmaline was correctly identified and described in the ancient world by Theophrastus of Ancient Greece(student and successor of Plato and Aristotle) in 314 B.C. The name“tourmaline” came from the Celanese word"turmali, which means"mixed" ... moreBright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties were called"turmali" parcels. In ancient mythology, tourmaline was found in all colors because it traveled along a rainbow and gathered all the rainbow's colors. Here’s a beautiful. Pastel yellow tourmaline gemstone from Siberia, the Ural Mountains of Russia. Brightly and delicately hued, this gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by an 18th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a light and bright, almost“citrus” character. Though by contemporary standards it would not be considered a high-quality gemstone, by eighteenth century standards it is a very nice gemstone, quite typical of antique, handcrafted Siberian tourmaline of the era. Despite its shortcomings, it is nonetheless very beautiful. The gemstone is clearly not even remotely near flawless. It possesses quite a lot of colorless crystalline material scattered through the gemstone. Principally in the form of widely dispersed particles. These crystalline blemishes are not obnoxi
