Ancient Greek Large and Weighty Bronze Ring 332–58 BC
About The Greek Jewelry Greek jewelry. Etruscan jewelry and other Italian jewelry made in the time between about 850 BC and about 500 BC(called the archaic period, was inspired and greatly influenced by Egyptian and Assyrian examples brought by Phoenician merchants who were crisscrossing the Mediterranean Sea by this time. The techniques remained basically the same as the earlier Egyptian and Assyrian styles though embossed or stamped plates of gold and silver became a predominant basic element. Granulation in gold continued and was developed in Etruria to a remarkable degree of delicate refinement. In the Classical Greek period. 5th and 4th centuries BC(480 BC– 338 BC) granulation went out of fashion. Enameling was re-introduced and filigree became predominant. Classic Greek jewelry was delicate and very refined. In the Classical period ... moreof ancient Greek jewelry manufacture there was little jewelry actually made in Greece itself but so splendid is its quality and technical prowess that it is considered to be miniature sculpting. And a fine expression of the breadth of the artistic creations of this `Golden Age' Flowers and tassels were a common motif for gold chain necklaces, and hoop earrings held delicate filigree discs and rosettes. Such pieces are available to the modern day collector. During the Hellenistic Age(330-27 BC) After the conquests of Alexander the Great, rather opulent gold pieces with precious and semi-precious stones became popular. Greek jewellery design and manufacture was influenced by the"new" of Oriental influences of the conquered lands as well as a revival of interest in Egyptian themes and styles. Greek jewelry of the Hellenistic Age saw small gold workings fashioned into pendant vases. Little delicate winged victories, cupids, and doves becoming common motifs. At the same time, an important innovation into Greek jewelry manufacture was the introduction of quite large colored stones, especially garnets, as a center-piece of designs. This style was copied by the Romans, who

Ancient Greek Bronze Bell with Egyptian Osiris Statue Figure
A very rare ancient Greek bronze bell. With an ancient Egyptian bronze votive statue of Osiris used as the clapper! The unlikely pastiche is of ancient manufacture, rather than modern and shows that the ancient Greeks were quite prepared to recycle an Egyptian-made bronze effigy for use in a completely functional context. Whether the bell was intended for religious. Funerary or other functional reasons is not known. An early 20th century collectors card originally affixed to the piece records that it was recovered from the Greek south Italian colony of Cumae during excavations. The Osiris figure can be dated stylistically and would have been made in Egypt during the Late Period. Approximately 664-323- a date consistent with the one presumably established from the excavations and recorded on the collector's card. The statue would originally ... morehave been made as a votive gift to the god Osiris; gifted to the god in thanks for, or in anticipation of, a favor. The god is shown mummiform, holding the crook and flail with beard and atef crown. The suspension loop at the back would have enabled the figure to have been worn as an amulet in ancient times. For protection. The tang at the bottom would have enabled the piece to have been inserted into a wooden base where it would have stood upright. How this votive depiction of Osiris came to be found in south Italy is quite remarkable. However. It is most unlikely that the Osiris could have been used in its current form by an ancient Egyptian, who would have seen the use of the statue as a clapper as a sacrilegious act. Height: 3 1/8 inches. Width: 3 7/8 inches. Height of Osiris alone: 2 3/4 inches. Condition: Unrestored. The top of the bell was either constructed in two sections or has been subject to an ancient repair. The bronze loop attachment. Upper bell as well as the handle are all heavily patinated and have not been the subject of modern interference. A small hole on one side of the bell consistent with earlier attack of"bronze disease" Provenance: Ex. Co

ANCIENT GREEK ROMAN & OTHER WOMEN IN SCULPTURE PAINTING CERAMIC ART ANTIQUE
Greek Beauty” By Berenice Geoffroy-Schneiter. Published in New York by Assouline in 2003. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Goddess. Nymph, muse, or merely mortal, women never ceased to inspire Greek sculptors and painters. Far from representing an ideal beauty of young athletes with exultant bodies, these sensuous feminine models recount to us the ambiguous notions the Greeks had toward women. From a Pompeian fresco of Sappho to a terracotta bust of Aphrodite, and from a pure gold wreath to a bronze mirror fashioned in the 16th century BC, the art of the ancient Greeks seems as elegant and profound as ever. Many of the color plates seen here reveal the fascination that the female form held for Greek sculptors. Showing both the fascination and repulsion, eroticism and damnation, this small work in pictures offers a synthesis ... moreof art and beauty through what is perhaps the most inspired period of all times: ancient Greece. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 6.5"x9" 79 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. Clean condition.
