Not cheap silver electroplate! These are heavy. High-quality solid sterling silver 32mm post type hoop earrings. Other sizes and styles available, please see my store. DETAIL: The ancient Egyptians believed that the skin of their gods was composed of gold. And their bones were thought to be of silver. When silver was introduced into Egypt, it probably was more valuable than gold(silver was rarer and more valuable than gold in many Mesoamerican cultures as well) In surviving inventories of valuables, items of silver were listed above those of gold during the Old Kingdom. Jewelry made of silver was almost always thinner than gold pieces, as indicated by the bracelets of the 4th Dynasty(about 2,500 B.C. When the price of silver finally did fall due to more readily available supplies, for at least another thousand years the price of silver was fixed at half that of gold. Several royal mummies attributable to about 1.000 B.C. were even entombed in solid silver coffins. Around 1,000 B.C. Greek Athenians began producing massive amounts silver from the Laurium mines, and would supply much of the ancient Mediterranean world with its silver for almost 1,000 years. In celebration of that heritage here are two gorgeous, high quality solid sterling silver post type hoop earrings. Please do not confuse these with cheap silver electroplate. These are high-quality solid sterling silver earrings made right here in the USA, crafted to last a lifetime. HISTORY OF SILVER: After gold. Silver is the metal most widely used in jewelry and the most malleable. The oldest silver artifacts found by archaeologists date from ancient Sumeria about 4,000 B.C. At many points in the ancient world, it was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Silver is found in native form(i.e. in nuggets) as an alloy with gold(electr

Ancient Egyptian Late Period Faience Shabti / Ushabti Statue Figure - 664 BC
A well provenanced ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to the Late Period, 664- 323 BC. Modelled in dazzling blue faience. The figure is shown mummiform, with back pillar, wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. The ancient Egyptians believed that the eternal soul of the deceased resided in a paradise known as the'Field of Reeds' With its calm waters and lush vegetation. This fertile environment was similar to their own earthly world at the banks of the river Nile. Unfortunately however, the dead were also expected to undertake agricultural labour on behalf of the gods; ploughing, sowing, and reaping the crops. For those who wished to avoid this physical strain, shabti figures were placed in their burial chambers as alternative workers, imbued with a powerful magic so ... morethat they would rise and take the deceased’s place working in the fields. A spell was often written on the shabti so that it would awaken. Known as the'shabti spell' from Chapter Six of the Book of the Dead, it reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis, Even as the man is bounden. Namely to cultivate the fields, To flood the river-banks or to carry the sand of the East to the West, And back again. Then'Here am I! you shall say. Height: 4 ¼ inches. Condition: Excellent. ZURQIEH- RARE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FAIENCE USHABTI - 21st dynasty , 1075 B.C
BEAUTIFULL& RARE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FAIENCE USHABTI- 21st dynasty. 1075 B.C Ushabtis Ancient Egyptian religion held that when a soul passed from the realm of the living to that of the dead it could be called upon to tend the fields of Osiris—the divine ruler of the Egyptian underworld. Of course. After spending a full lifetime of toil, most Egyptians hoped that they would be able to relax and enjoy themselves once they were dead. Therefore, to avoid undue work in the afterlife, Egyptian kings and commoners alike normally had themselves buried with numerous ushabtis(called shabtis before the 21 st Dynasty. C. 1077-943 BC) figurines that were intended to answer the summons of Osiris in place of the deceased. It has been suggested that these figures may have served to replace the sacrifice of living servants to attend the dead in the afterlife. ... moreUshabtis were usually mummiform. But their intention to work was made clear by the hoe usually carried over their shoulders and the basket on their backs. They were commonly inscribed with the name of the deceased inserted into the sixth chapter of the Book of the Dead. Which reads: Illumine the Osiris[name of the deceased] Whose word is truth. Hail, Shabti Figure! If the Osiris[name of the deceased] be decreed to do any of the work which is to be done in Khert-Neter(the Egyptian underworld) let everything which standeth in the way be removed from him- whether it be to plough the fields, or to fill the channels with water, or to carry sand from the East to the West. The Shabti Figure replieth: I will do it. Verily I am here when thou callest. Such inscribed ushabtis are known from Egyptian burials as early as the 11 th Dynasty(c. 2134-1991 BC) but they became ubiquitous during the 21 st Dynasty and later. They continued to be used to buy the dead leisure time in the underworld until the ascendency of Christianity abolished traditional Egyptian religion in the sixth century AD. The figurines were made in many different sizes and materials. Including wax, clay, wo

Ancient Egyptian Late Period Faience Baboon Amulet Of Thoth - 664 BC
A well provenanced and very fine ancient Egyptian faience amulet of a baboon. Representative of Thoth. Dating to the Late Period, 664– 332 BC. Modelled in deep green faience. Thoth is shown as a baboon, seated with hands resting on knees, long snout and shaggy mane. With a loop at the back for attachment to a necklace. Made from the sand of the desert but possessing the allure of gold. Faience was considered by the ancient Egyptians to be a material imbued with strong magic. Worn by the wealthy, especially royalty and members of the court, it was known to the ancient Egyptians themselves as tjehnet(dazzling) It is little wonder then that the ancients chose to model their protective amulets in this beautiful. Magical substance. Figures such as this were used to activate heka(magic) through spells. The supernatural world was an ever present ... morereality in the earthly lives of the Egyptians and heka was often called upon to protect and guide them. From the very earliest periods of Egyptian history. The baboon was prominent in religion and ritual. Initially, the animal was also associated with the sun god Ra, as baboons screech at sunrise. Subsequently it came to be linked with a deity known as the"Great White One" the moon) eventually the Great White One was conflated with Thoth, the better known ibis-headed god of writing and recording. As a representative of the deity who recorded Osiris' judgment, the baboon amulet was worn in the hope of his protection. Height: ¾ of an inch. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. NY and Ex. collection of Mrs. M. Higgins(nee Lamont-Havers) CT. This piece. Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom Faience Palace Rosette - 1186 BC
An ancient Egyptian faience rosette. Dating to the New Kingdom, likely the reign of Ramesses III, 1186–1155 BC. Depicting a flowering daisy. With eight white petals against a grey background, the central boss in vibrant yellow, intended to imitate the gold of the nails securing these rosettes to palace walls. The rosette has a long history in Egyptian decorative borders and ornamental bands. It was popular at most palace sites. Indeed they give us a vivid idea of Egyptian palace décor, and what it might have been like to walk those corridors more than three thousand years ago. Based on its style, this particular piece is most likely to have adorned the walls of the palace of Pharaoh Ramesses III at Tell el-Yahudiya. For further discussion of these rosettes and their meaning. Including published examples, please see: Friedman. F. ed. ... more1997. Gifts of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Faience. Large Ancient Egyptian Faience Papyrus Sceptre Wadj Amulet - 664 BC
A stunning. Very large ancient Egyptian faience papyrus column( wadj) amulet. Dating to the Late Period, around 664- 323 B.C. Though the wadj was a widely popular style throughout ancient Egypt. This piece is beautifully preserved and is the largest of its type that we have seen. The amulet of an attractive pale blue-green colour and smooth. Linear form. The bottom of the column and top of the shaft with incised decoration in the shape of abstracted basal leaves. The flared finial is surmounted by a ridged stud, reflecting the contemporary architecture of the temples and shrines of the period. This piece is without an upper incision, as is often the case with the largest, finest examples, which were often reserved for special contexts rather than everyday wear. Ancient Egyptians were highly superstitious. And amulets such as this were worn ... moreand treasured as conduits to sympathetic magic, used to attract power and protection from their chosen deity. The magic contained in an amulet could be understood not only from its shape, but by the words said or ingredients rubbed over the surface in ceremonies intended to boost their protective power. These symbols generally conferred the powers they represented. The wadj. One of the most ancient of all Egyptian symbols, embodied and conveyed freshness, youth, vigour, and the continuance of life to its wearer. A fascinating remnant of ancient Egyptian beliefs and a beautiful piece of faience sculpture. Truly one of the finest examples of its type. For a similarly sized. But comparatively poorly preserved papyrus amulet currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum, It is highly unusual for prominent examples such as this to appear on the private market and they remain highly sought after. For a similar. Published example and further discussion on faience papyrus sceptre amulets and their meaning, please see: Petrie. F.W.M. 1994(2nd ed. Amulets. London: Martin Press. Condition: Unrestored. A beautiful example. Height: 4 ¾ inches. Provenance: Ex. Gantner collection. Ber

Elsewhere in the ancient ... moreworld mankind has used garnet as ornamentation for many thousands of years. In the ancient Roman world, it was not only popular with the Romans themselves(particularly for the carving of intaglios for signet rings) but also with the Germanic(barbarian” tribes in Northern Europe bordering the Roman Empire. Garnet was also prominently featured in the magnificent cloisonné inlay jewelry found in sixth and seventh century burials in England at the Anglo-Saxon site of Sutto Hoo, and was also popular with the other peoples of ancient Britannia, including the Celts, Franks, and Normans. Victorian Europe was so enthusiastic about the raspberry red color of Rhodolite Garnet that they were called“Bohemian Rubies” In Africa this remarkable red semi-precious gemstone was known as a“Cape Ruby” during the Victorian era. Here is a gorgeously colored dark raspberry red rhodolite garnet faceted gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. This is a very pretty semi-precious gemstone. Ancient Egyptian Third Intermediate Period Nefertum & Sekhmet Faience - 1070 BC
A large and extremely rare ancient Egyptian faience statuette of Nefertum and Sekhmet. Dating to the Third Intermediate Period, 1070- 664 BC. Shown striding forward. Nefertum is depicted with a sense of statuesque glory, indeed his form best recalls the monumental sculpture encountered in Egyptian temple architecture. Wearing a lotus headdress with dual menats falling from the side. A shendyet kilt. Long wig and divine beard. On the reverse is the mother of Nefertum; Sekhmet, she is shown standing in her lion headed form, face turned to her left, holding an ankh and wearing the solar disk of Aten upon her head. As a representation of Sekhmet and Nefertum. This evocative piece would likely have been deposited somewhere in the area of Memphis, where the cult of those deities was located. Though rare, the heavy set modelling and size of this ... morefigure draws comparisons with other large faience statuettes produced during the Third Intermediate Period, such as Height: 4 ¾ inches. Ancient Egyptian Wood Cosmetic Spoon New Kingdom Reproduction?
Measures 7.5 X 1.8 inches(19 cm X 4.6 cm) This is an ancient Egyptian wood cosmetic spoon in a female form. But it may also be a very good reproduction. The spoon head has two fish carved on the bottom side and has triangular, geometric decoration on the spoon rim. The stand on the back of the female form has geometric carvings. There are traces of paint and/or plaster in various locations as can be seen in the pictures. The arms seem to have been carved separately and attached. There are three letters or decoration below the breasts, perhaps the initials of a previous owner or some sort of ancient decoration that I am unfamiliar with. This comes from the collections of a great aunt who recently died at 106 years of age who formed her collections in the 1930s and 40s. There is the possibility that this is a 19th century reproduction, but ... moreI have no way to determine this; most things in her collections were not reproductions. All sales are final, so please review the pictures very closely for further details. Please feel free to make offers as well. An example of more cosmetic spoons may be found at Bonhams, such as: Thanks for your interest. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d72f%2Bf7%60%3E-146cd537e42-0x113-

* Replica * Ancient Egyptian Sekhmet Amulet
Amulet of the goddess Sekhmet I purchased this amulet of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet in Cairo. In the mid 1980's, with a group of similar amulets. At that time it was still legal to purchase Egyptian antiquities. From government licensed antiquity dealers. When I asked the dealer, I was told the group came from a recently found site. The site of an ancient amulet maker. Later. Once home, I realized something was wrong. Although it's details are correct, and the amulet represented a good quality Period piece. There were problems with it. As it turned out. The story told to me was likely only half true. That is. The amulet was likely made in an ancient mold true, but not in antiquity. Made perhaps 30 years ago today, not 3,000. True. The style is consistent with Third Intermediate Period amulets. Here, representing the goddess Sekhmet ... moreseated on her throne, with hands resting on her thighs. She wears a tripartite wig, and the double-crown of upper and lower Egypt. All appearing fine. But. As I researched further, I came to realized something was wrong. The colors and glazes are'off. Plus one additional, now obvious, problem. The amulet lacks a suspension hole in the back pillar. A small detail that my'dealer friend, or his supplier, missed when re-casting the pieces. And one that I missed myself when buying it. So. Although this amulet is not ancient. It does serve a good purpose today. First, it is a better than usual study piece. For two reasons. Likely made in an ancient mold. It expresses the correct form and fine details for which to watch, when buying a Period piece. While at the same time, acting as a guide for faux colors and glazes. Both of which a new. And seasoned, collector should beware and learn. Height approximately 1 5/8 inches/ 4.2 cm. Beautiful. Clear, clean color, and even glaze over it's sides and front Intact as seen in photos. With a tiny chip to the base. 0fe.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d70f%2B%3E0fe-146d59ae6a0-0x10d-
