2.25 Inch Ancient Egyptian GOLD Hathor Mummy Amulet / 1075-712 BC w Provenance
You are bidding on a 100% authentic and quite rare. Sheet gold Amulet of the goddess Hat-hor from approximately 1075-712 BC(3rd Intermediate Period) fashioned using the repousse technique where detailed ornaments were shaped by hammering malleable materials from the reverse side to fashion designs in low relief. Resin or other material would be inserted between the two halfs and then joined together with solder. Here. The Goddess stands wearing a long tight and close fitted dress. Her hands are held closely to her sides. On her head she has an elaborate headdress, that includes the divine Sun-disk and uraeus. The sun-disk is flanked on either side by the deity's long bovine horns. Together the grouping identifies her as the goddess Hathor. Under her crown, she wears the heavy tripartite wig of fashion. Although her face is human and feminine, ... moreher ears prominently extend from the sides of her face, and are that of a cows. For the ancient Egyptians, this reminded them, symbolically, of her maternal and nurturing aspects. The amulet was likely one several similar pieces, that were fastened and fixed to the mummy wrappings, of the deceased. All serving to protect. We can see, this piece was cut from the original wrappings, where a small area of cloth still remains. Although complete, and with little evidence of losses, signs of it's age are evident and expected. When we look closely we can also see, there are some areas where the foil was lightly pressed or split. But, none of it detracting from it's rarity. Within and on the sheets of foil, black bitumen traces remain. A large and rare ancient Egyptian bronze figure of Osiris. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664-323 B.C. The bronze is solid cast and depicts Osiris. God of the afterlife, bearded, mummiform and holding the crook and flail. He wears plumed crown with uraeus at the front, the snake's tail rising atop the crown. The tenon on the underside would have attached the piece to an original wooden base. Now lost. The statue was likely dedicated in ancient times at a temple or shrine to the God in thanks for, or in anticipation of, a favor. Height of bronze. Including tenon: 4 inches. Condition: Very good. A series of cones once were originally placed in one or two rows above the tombs entrance. They represented rafters or ceiling beams/logs that held up the roof of a dwelling. Huy was a very high official in the court of Amon-hotep III(18th dynasty. Circa 1350 BC) His given and full name was Amon-hotep, son of Hapu. He familiar name was'Huy. He led a stellar life filled with honors and notability. His titles were many. He is known as Royal Architect, Overseer of Works, Royal Scribe, Steward to pharaohs daughter. He was granted special permission to have a mortuary temple built in the vicinity of those of pharaohs and it was granted a perpetual endowment of servants and offerings for his Ka. Huy was remembered a thousand years after his death, and well into the Ptolemaic Period, as a Sage his accomplishments(Colossi of Menmon was built under Huy's direction) and for his writings. When most of us think of ancient Egypt. Or the Egyptians themselves, many things may come to mind. But, one of the first things people will think of are mummies. It is well known by most people. The Egyptians did not simply bury their dead. They mummified, perfumed, adorned them with jewelry and protective amulets. The body was preserved for the true essence of the person. The Ba. The soul. By preserving the human form, the soul could identify and visit the body in it's tomb. It could partake of the offerings left for it, and hear the prayers and petitions ... moresent to it in the Duat(The Netherworld, Heaven) by friends and family. Less known is the fact that. The Egyptians also mummified animals. Indeed nearly every animal imaginable was mummified; bulls, dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, lizards and fish to name a few! Pets were also mummified for the obvious reasons. They were a part of the family. But the others? A bull? A crocodile? A snake or fish? Why them? For the Egyptians. The reason and logic was simple. The gods were often associated with animals. Distinguishing attributes of an animal helped priests and teachers convey ideas to the people about the nature of God. Strong as a bull, as mighty as a lion. So, for instance. We will often read, the god or pharaoh is'as a bull. Especially strong& especially virile. In this way, animals became associated with the'gods. In fact actually became an aspect of God by association. Slightly convex-in section, faience tile, bluish-green glazed; on the reverse undercut projection with longitudinal hole. Through which would have been strung a cord of some vegetal matter. Probably papyrus. Using the cords for the alignment. The tiles were embedded in plaster on the limestone chamber walls. In their arrangement these tiles imitate reed matting. A common Egyptian motif, the blue-green colour is also associated with water and regeneration. Thus the tiles not only evoke the earthly and afterlife home of the king. It is widely known that the scarab beetle was revered in ancient Egypt. This beetle. Found in the arid regions of North Africa, had a peculiar habit of depositing its eggs in camel dung(from which it feeds) and rolling it around with its hind legs into a ball until the ball of dung became hard. To the Egyptian this thought provoking achievement reminded them of the sun's rise across the sky every morning marking the beginning a new day(of life) The ancient Egyptian learned to make amulets of the scarab beetle from stone or faience to be worn for protection and good luck. Heart scarabs were larger than the average scarab and were meant to be sewn into the mummy wrappings near the deceased one's heart. The mask constructed of cartonnage(ancient Egyptian plaster) and decorated throughout with black and green paint. Taking the form of the deceased woman. Her arms crossed below her breasts, right hand clenched tightly and pierced, dark black hair framing the face and falling just above her chest, held tight by a vivid green seshed headband. Her rounded chin and pursed mouth sit below her short. Straight nose, the eyes with cosmetic lines, the dark pupils returning the viewers gaze, highlighted by bushy black eyebrows. The mask is decorated with three scenes. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be.
