Provenance: Collected by Gustave Jéquier(1868-1946) Galleria Delvecchio. is pleased to present a collection of Egyptian antiquities assembled by the celebrated Swiss Egyptologist Gustave Jéquier. Jéquier was born in 1868 in Neuchatel. He first studied in Paris under Gaston Maspero(1846-1916) and later went to Berlin before joining the de Morgan expedition to Persia. During which time he contributed to the discovery and decipherment of the code of Hammurabi. Gustave Jéquier was a giant in the field of Egyptology ... morewhose contributions are far too numerous to list here. He is best know for his association with the French Institute in Cairo which enabled him to engage in seminal research at the pyramid site of the Old Kingdom. He also completed the work begun at Abydos by his Swiss compatriot, Henri] Eduard Naville(1844-1926) The two are considered to be Switzerland’s most preeminent Egyptologists. One of Jéquier’s most important discoveries was the 13th Dynasty pyramid of Khendjer. He wrote extensively on his history of Egyptian architecture, and published on philology and religion as well. Gustave Jéquier died in 1946 in the city in which he was born, and most of his collection was acquired by the University of Basel. The works of art presented here were given to a sibling who emigrated to the US in the late 1940’s; the collection later passed to their daughter, Jéquier’s niece. It could have originated from upper Thebes as other similar glazed items have been found here. The intaglio design to the underside features Anubis lord of the place of embalming/ god of the dead and a block of hieroglyphic text. It is probably 26th to 30th dynasty circa 664- 332 BC but very hard to date exactly, i have seen limestone and composite examples from 28th dynasty some with loops through the handle. A fragment of an ancient Egyptian New Kingdom limestone stele. Late 19th- 20th Dynasty, 1200– 1077 BC. This beautifully balanced composition reflects the ordered clarity of Egyptian art. The man on the right is shown in a formalised stance offering a gift of incense. He raises one hand in worship while the other lifts the burning cup, a plume of smoke rising lazily from its surface. Though the carving is sensitive and thoughtful, the face betrays no emotion, Egyptian art was intended to replicate the rigid order of the world, and emotion was therefore rejected as a fleeting, not permanent feature. The hieroglyphics in the top left of the panel read: The Scribe of Letters[of the Lord of the Two Lands] Nesbanebdjed. Identifying this mysterious figure as. Mounted atop a circular stone scole. Hapi. The baboon-headed son of Horus, was guardian of the lungs and was protected by Nephthys, goddess of the air. Possibly Earlier) Finely carved of basalt(or black serpentine) the rectangular shaped block with two pairs of feet along the back edge, each broken off below the ankle, the front carved in low relief with offerings including loaves of bread and jars resting on an offering mat, the basin with channel at the base leading into a spout at the front of the table for the drainage of offering liquids. This is a GENUINE ancient artifact from the Roman Empire. It probably dates to the 1st-2nd century AD. It's made of metal(probably bronze) and measures 1.5" long. It appears to have been a piece of a larger item. Perhaps a finial or some kind of decoration. I'm not sure what it's original purpose was, but it's very interesting in that it's a Roman artifact, but features the Egyptian god Anubis.
