Steatite Scarab Life. Stability_ 100% Genuine Here is a nice example of a scarab from ancient Egypt's Hyksos period(the time of Joseph in the Bible? with nicely inscribed hieroglyphs. The ankh symbol for"life" is used here three times(slight damage to the loop on one of the ankh symbols) and the djed symbol(bottom center) for"stability" is used once. The wearer of this scarab was obviously wishing these blessings for him/herself. On the top side at first it appeared that there was a chip on the side of the scarab's head but I am not sure if that is a chip or just part of the design. The scarab was recently stamped into some reddish putty to see what kind of image it would leave. Steatite Scarab Scroll Design_ 100% Genuine Here is a nice example of a"scroll motif" scarab from ancient Egypt's Hyksos Period. 1660- 1570 BC. The pictures do not do it justice. It is finely cut with a mixture of real hieroglyphs and pseudo-hieroglyphs in the center bordered by a peripheral scroll boundary. Many of the Hyksos people. Being Asiatics, had only a limited knowledge of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Sometimes their inscriptions are a hodgepodge of meaningless characters mixed in with some good hieroglyphs. There are three readable hieroglyphs here and all three are the ubiquitous nefer sign for"good. Beautiful. One at the top of the scarab and two at the bottom. Made of polished steatite. Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom Blue Faience Scarab Pectoral - 1550 BC
An ancient Egyptian two-tone blue and turquoise heart scarab faience pectoral. Dating to the New Kingdom(circa 1550-1069 B.C. In the form of a bxnt(the monumental gateway of an Egyptian temple) This beautifully crafted piece depicts a sacred reed-boat carrying a now lost heart scarab across the river Nile. The scene is flanked by standing figures of the goddesses Isis and Nephthys, both with their arms extended forward with hands upraised in a traditional gesture of worship. Framed on all four sides with decorative borders including a pillared motif above, which once again invokes contemporary architectural styles. The piece is perforated along the top edge by six holes, running from behind the cornice to emerge along the top of the rim. These were designed to stitch the artefact to the mummy wrappings in antiquity, remnants of the original ... morestitching remain. Pectoral necklaces such as this were a vital component in ancient Egyptian funerary ritual. The pectoral would have lain on the chest of a mummy. Enmeshed in the layers of linen. Each bore a motif associated with the wish for protection and a successful passing into the next world. This piece displays clear funerary symbology; as transportation to the afterlife was believed to be accomplished by way of solar barques which sailed the celestial ocean. The figures of the goddesses Isis and Nephthys were often seen accompanying the dead on this final journey. As dieties they served as guardians of both life and death, growth and decay. The priests presiding over the embalming process would have handled this pectoral with great care. Inscribing the heart scarab with sacred prayers intended to protect the soul of the deceased and placing the artefact over the heart. Within the Book of the Dead. The objective of the scarab was to prevent the heart from giving evidence against the individual in judgment before Osiris. One side contains the"sema motif" consisting of two lotus flowers and the papyrus representing the union of Upper and Lower Egypt. The reverse side. Though damaged by a chip missing, still contains enough hieroglyphs to translate the entire inscription. It reads,Praise the Goodness of Amun-Ra. This type of"sema motif" dates to the Middle Kingdom(2160-1788 BC) but predates the 12th dynasty(2000-1788 BC) Therefore. Using J. H. You are bidding on a very detailed scarab that I am selling as a top-quality REPRODUCTION. The scarab's elytra(wing-case) is double line divided with humeral callosity. The beetle's head. Eyes, clypeus and side plates are accurately represented. Front and hind legs are ladder scored. The base is inscribed with a cartouche that attempts to reproduce the name of the pharaoh Sheshi. The text before and after calls him, Son of Re' and concludes, asking he may'live forever. The scarab was bought as authentic but certain aspects don't appear"correct" it is accurately carved as a New Kingdom scarab. But, the base is inscribed and designed as a Second Intermediate/Hyksos scarab, referencing the pharaoh Sheshi! I had thought it might be a later'commemorative. The glyphs are blundered(improperly written and executed) ... moreOriginally, I thought they were nothing more than scribal errors, when coping older texts.
