Ancient Egyptian"Sema Tawy Motif" Scarab and a Primitive Wadjet Eye and Bes Amulet_ 100% Genuine I have a steatite scarab with some of the blue/green glaze remaing on the face. The rounded back of the scarab has some smoothing of details due to wind and sand erosion. The flat base has the early style of the Sema Tawy unification of Upper and Lower Egypt motif showing the intertwining of a lotus plant and a papyrus plant. This motif was popular at the end of the Middle Kingdom Period ca. 1900 BC. There is a small hole on ne of the plants that occured when the craftsman was doing his engraving. A very rare and attractive. Ancient Egyptian steatite bull headed Scarab beetle, dating to the 19th- 20th Dynasty, approximately 1350- 1090 B.C. A beautiful dark green scarab. Likely constructed from steatite or schist, with delicately detailed wing cases, head, thorax and legs. Pierced longitudinally for attachment. Inscribed on the base are the hieroglyphs for: Nefer-rt-maet-re The scarab( kheper) beetle was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt because the insect was a symbol of both rebirth and the sun god Ra. The base inscribed with various hieroglyphic motifs and a central cartouche bearing the signs'Men kheper re' the throne name of the pharaoh Thutmosis III. Attractively framed for display. The artifacts were acquired from two very reliable Egyptian antiquity suppliers; one based in New Jersey and the other in the United Kingdom. The center piece is from the supplier in the UK, and is a 3 ½ inch(9 cm) tall“Shabti” or“Ushabti” totem statue in turquoise glazed faience. It is thought that the Ushabti represented a servant who would aid the deceased in the after-life. This Ushabti most likely dates from the Late Period(ca. 7th to 3rd C. BC) It has a true turquoise color and the remains of an Eye-of-Horus(Wedjat” symbol of ... moredivine protection on the chest and stomach. Faience is very delicate and this piece shows some wear at the left shoulder. Otherwise, the piece is in excellent condition. Most faience Ushabti show breaks, cracks, eroded glaze, or other defects. This is not unusual for authentic ancient pieces. Three ancient Egyptian faience bead necklaces, from the supplier in New Jersey, surround the Ushabti and date from the 1st millennium BC to the time of the Christian era. The center necklace has a scarab-shaped pendant with hieroglyphs, but what also appears to be a Christian cross on the reverse side. Consequently, this appears to be a very early, and rare, Christian artifact. The necklaces are on average 21 inches(apx. 53 cm) long. Dating to the 2nd Intermediate Period(c. 1786- 1567 BC) It is a handsome example, with bold features and a nice patina. The Scarab is carved in the form of a beetle with simple details, the underside carved with a device acting as a seal for the original owner. The device takes the form of two Wedjat(Eyes of Horus) flanking a lotus flower. Such an amulet would have been worn suspended from a cord, or possibly acted as the bezel for a ring(only if the original owner was wealthy enough!
