Book is complete. Purchased by my husband years ago from a German Fancier's Library(notated"Im besitstz von P. Schonenberger1983" and has ALL 14 full size plates intact, of which 13 are in full color. All other B&W dramings also intact and page edges are not damaged in any way. End papers have obviously been replaced years ago. And maybe the spine was reglued at that time( I know little or nothing about book-binding) but apart from the stains on the Giant Pouter frontispiece picture(clearly shown) the book spine is tight and the overall condition of cover and pages is almost mint, except for yellowing of script with age.

Hi there once again eBayers! Here I have a wonderful antique book. European Ferns" by botanist James Britten F.L.S. Illustrated by D. Blair F.L.S. Published by Cassell. Petter, Galpin& Co, London, Paris and New York, c1881. Probably a first edition. The book has 30 chromolithographic plates and numerous illustrations in the text. Half calf hardcover with cloth boards slightly rubbed to corners. Gilt filleted raised bands decorative gilt motifs and leather title label. The hardcover is in good condition. As can be seen on the photos of the front and back. There is some fading from the light. The external spine is worn but intact. Inside the front is a pasted Prize, Awarded to Leslie Robertson for Botany, signed by the teacher, East Leigh, Melbourne and dated 1881. The internal spine/binding is fair, but the pages are good to very ... moregood, with some pages coming away towards the middle of the book, but there are no pages missing. There is minimal foxing throughout. The colour illustrations are bright and clean and each retains the separation page from the regular pages. 196 pages in total. A truly unique book documenting the ferns of Europe. 225 x 280 x 30mm thick Enlarge the photographs for the best visual description of condition! Where I’ve used the flash. This shows detail. Early Japanese Photo / Postcard Book. Pre WWI. Wooden Covers
This is quite an extraordinary collection of colourised photos/ cards housed between wooden covers. The cover depicts two figures flying a kite in front of a village and Mount Fuji. I am unsure but the faces of the figures could either be an early plastic( somewhat doubtful) or. More likely, parts of a pachyderm. There are 48 pictures represented. Of many different facets of late 1800's, early 1900's Japanese life. There are village scenes, shops and markets, fishermen and farmers. There are the rich and the poor; quite a few seem to be of Geisha. Temples and places of natural beauty. Quite a collection. The pictures are mounted on thick card, one on each side. Once, the card pages would have concertinaed out, all joined together. Now most are separate. Many have a piece of tissue between the pictures. There is some foxing to the ... morecard, and some blemishes as can be seen in the photos. None are mint- all are supremely interesting though. Please use pictures as part of description. Please see photos. The book was produced from original artwork by the children of Professor Franz Cizek's Juvenile Art Classes in Vienna in the early 1920s. It is extremely rare. This book. Which contains all 14 colour lithographs plus the end papers. Was rebound by a library many years ago as the cover was not in good condition. These illustrations are original lithographs. A medium the child artists had never used before. The children drew their pictures on the lithographic stone ... morethemselves, and the lithographer Herr Berger did the rest of the printing process, faithfully reproducing the colours of the children's original paintings. The artworks are colourful, bold, beautifully designed and drawn, and incredibly mature for the work of children. About Franz Cizek: Born in Bohemia in 1865. Franz Cizek was one of the founders of modern art education. Trained as an artist in Vienna. In 1897, he set up his children"s art classes, working with children from 6 to 14. In 1904. His classes were incorporated into the Secessionist-dominated School of Applied Arts, where Cizek also taught teenagers. The juvenile classes continued until 1938. Cizek was closely associated with members of the Secessionist Movement including the architect Joseph Maria Olbrich and the painter Gustav Klimt. After WW1. Cizek established an international reputation by lecturing at art education conferences in England, Germany and the U.S. He said: The child comes into the world as creator and creates everything out of his imagination"
