Vintage 1940s DEKALB SEED FLYING CORN WEATHERVANE Die-Cut Tin 2-Sided Farm Sign
For your consideration is this vintage 1940s metal weathervane sign for Dekalb Corn. Back in the day these signs were attached to fence posts alongside corn test plots. The bottom of the sign's steel rod has a pointed end that was driven into the wood fence post. The winged corn cob rotates freely on the rod. Grabbing the attention of passers-by and showing wind direction. The sign is die-cut tin with ribs for rigidity. It measures 18" from one end of the cob to the other, and 8.5" from the tip of the far wing to the bottom of the cob. From the tip of that wing to the bottom of the rod measures 22.5" See photos for condition. INTERESTINGLY, when I came across this sign, it came with a steel-rod metal clip shown in the last photo. I suspect these were used to fasten the sign in a fixed, non-rotating fashion, but that's ... morejust my theory. If a DeKalb expert can answer this riddle I will revise this listing with the answer. 19 TH C. PAINTED SHEET IRON RUNNING HORSE WEATHERVANE, 48" LONG
Most silhouete weathervanes are suspect as to age. But not this one. It is definitely early{pre 1900} and probably home made judging from the multiple piecing. Profuse strapping on one side, and the rough outline that looks like it was cut out with a chisel. The original black paint shows much age and in a few very small spots near where the support rod goes are traces of an old yellow. White, and an early red paint. There is much wear to the pieces that the support rod goes through and the original longer rod wore a groove into the side of the body. The rear foot has been reattached with an old repair. All this is to be expected on a bullet ridden antique vane that was outside for many years. The total length is 48" and the heigth to the top of the head is 28" from the bottom of the base. Antique Firewagon Weathervane
Early American.sheet iron horse drawn fire pumper weather vane. When purchased we were told it was found in the attic of a home in Gilmanton NH and was produced 1880-1890. The vane was created by a very talented blacksmith working in an old fire barn or stable and displays fine attention to every detail. It is made of hand cut sheet iron with great care given to displaying a sense of speed with two firemen with old fire helmets clinging to the pumper as a plume of smoke escapes from the boiler. The high stepping horse is at full gallop. The measurements of the vane are as follows: from the beginning of the horse to the end of the wagon is 32"The tip of the arrow to the end of the arrow feathers measures 36" The height at the highest point of the vane is 14 1/4" Thickness is approx 1/16" gauge sheet iron. The back of the ... morevane is reinforced with hand cut bands forming a frame and 23 hand made rivets which add strength and durability to the entire vane. There are two heavy loops for placing the vane on a pole. The surface patina on the front of the vane shows traces of black paint and has darkened with age. There is some pitting with some surface rust. But incredibly the vane is intact with no missing pieces.The back also displays rust and pitting. The creator of this vane was truly an American folk artist. The vane would be a one of a kind addition to the serious collector of Americana or antique fire memorabilia. Usually I have to look at a piece like this several times, over a period ranging from days to weeks to decide how I feel, but just one look was enough for this beautiful old weathervane to captivate me. The craftsman who formed and shaped this unusual piece was truly an artist. Each new detail that you notice seems to add more life to this great old copper sculpture and what I find to be most astounding is how the stains and patina formed as the sculpture aged have themselves somehow contributed even more amazingly lifelike details. I look at this pig and swear I am able to see faint traces of veins and muscles beneath the texture of this animal's hide. At times I am almost convinced this pig is alive. Not only is this weathervane a gorgeous work of art, it is large and heavy piece that remains as solid as the day it was created. A great looking Antique Weathervane Arrow and Sun Colored Milk Glass Lightning Ball set up on a display base and mounted on a copper Lightning Rod. Large Antique Copper and Zinc Trotting Horse Weathervane - Unique & well aged
You are bidding on a rare antique copper running horse weathervane with a solid cast metal( lead/zinc)head. The heavy weight of the attached head gives the piece perfect balance with the bottom attachment shaft being off center well to the anterior end. Fine Patina is evidence of years in the weather. No idea of age but 100 years would not be out of line. This beautiful piece was taken from a barn roof in southern PA recently I'm told by a man cleaning out a farm house for auction. The Auctioneer. Who I know well, could find no more specific information on origin. The horse does not appear to have been cleaned or polished and shows the work of nature. I have left it in tact as found at the auction. The horse's head is made of zinc/lead I'm told and the body is hand formed from heavy copper and hot lead soldered together into this ... morefine looking horse. The piece is 19" from bottom of attachment stub to top of ear, 33" long and weighs 8 1/2 lbs. Midsection girth is 15" What I find amazing is the detail in proper horse anatomy with muscles and veins showing and one photo makes clear this is a Stud. Head, eyes and mouth are so realistic. The creator was obviously atuned to horses and labored meticulously to create this work of art. I have seen others similar on e-bay in recent months, and while I may be prejudice, this piece is as good as I have seen and in marvelous condition with no cracks, dents or other distractions, anatomically correct and has a finish one would expect for age. A great piece for the barn or house roof or used inside mounted as a classic primitive. I've debated how to market this piece. Auction style or buy it now on E-Bay, live auction house, etc. I've settled on E-Bay auction style(starting at my customary low $9.99) which will give the most folks a chance to bid and take this good ole horse home. Featuring a straight arrow with lovely curled embellishments. Decorative piercings, a round. Double mount bra cket and a n oblong frame for inserting a glass panel. Condition is worn with lots of patina from weather. And fine pitting from expos ure with surface rust(does not bite) no cr acks. Bends, or missing pieces(amazingly enough) only thing o f note is the very end of the arrow has a bit of a flatten ed spot and the frame would have had two tiny clamps. One on each ... moreend. To hold the glass in p lace. There is only one clamp as shown and no indication the other is missing. So guessing glass would have been inserted and a tiny bra cket added. Antique Weathervane Horse.I believe to be the early 1900's or maybe later 1800's? I am not a weathervane expert so I am trying to present the best information I can.The entire weathervane is made of cast iron, since a magnet sticks to all pieces. This weathervane has a great finish from decades of exposure to the elements. Rain, sleet, snow, lightning, and birds. It measures 34" from the top of the horses head to the bottom of the base. The horse is 8"wide by 7"high, and the arrow is 12" wide. There is a makers mark on the bottom of the base but after a month of research, I still don't know who it belongs to. Vintage Copper Cherub Angel Weathervane for Table or Desk - Beautiful!
This is a vintage- NOT antique- decorative weathervane for your desk or table. It is crafted out of copper with a brass base. I bought it at an estate sale so I cannot attest to its age. But I think its not very old. That being said, it looks great! No defects, save that the previous owner polished the piece and there may be some polish residue that you wish to clean more thoroughly. The piece disassembles from the base fairly easily and will arrive for you to stack. Measures 15.5 high by about 9.75 wide.
