They contribute to the control of the arm(the right index of the fighter typically touches the tsuba) and to the protection of the hand. The tsuba was mostly meant to be used to prevent the hand from sliding onto the blade during thrusts as opposed to protecting from an opponent's blade. 17th Century Antique Japanese Wakizashi / Katana sword in fittings, fine tsuba
My pride and joy- A fine late 17th century Japanese wakizashi. Completely original late 1600's/ early 1700's blade in great polish with no fatal flaws. The blade is in a quite rare/ uncommon shobu zukuri style. This is not a cut down Katana. Instead it was in my opinion forged as a wakizashi and would have been part of a pair of daisho(katana and wakizashi) worn by the samurai of yore. The blade has cutting edge of about 14 inches. Blade is about 1.5 inches wide at the widest point. and the tang measures approx 4.2 inches. In its saya, the total length is 23.5 inches long. It has an irregular hamon that covers the length of the blade with no flaws and shows nice activity. Which could enhanced with just a basic touch up polish done by a professional(something i neither have the money or contacts here in the UK to arrange myself) The ... moreis in very good condition for a 300+ year old blade. There are some minor openings along the spine of the blade but they are minimal, look worse in the pictures than they do in the flesh, and are not fatal flaws. The blade is not'tired' and could take another polish. The edge is razor sharp and has no nicks/ chips that i can see with the naked eye. There is no rust/ pitting. The nakago has not been tampered with and has a nice even oxidization. The koshirae are nice but kind of a mixed bag. The tsuba is very nice. With nice carving and gold embellishments and certainly has much age(1800's? though dating tsuba is beyond a novice like me. The tsuka is rock solid, the whole blade has no movement within its mounts. The tsuka has a tight and well done green ito wrap with fully intact same showing some nice nodes. This obviously again has age. The copper menuki, and the horn kashira(spellings? are obviously later additions however. The habaki is a quality one, nicely done in thick gold foil(which is starting to crack slightly along the edge on one side) The saya is in good condition with black laquer(that has suffered some minor paint chips over its life. not many and aga
