Iron tsuba with gourd motif and rippled surface
Purchased in 2003 from a seller in Hawaii. But beyond that I don't know much about this tsuba. The tsuba has a dramatic rippled design. Making it more like a three-dimensional sculpture than a flat tsuba. The surface has a nice patina with some faint loops and spirals. Some inlaid with light metal(maybe brass? I had this tsuba mounted on an iaito(for iaido) for several years. So there are a few small abrasions on the back from where my seppa touched the tsuba(see detail photo) There is also a faint wearing away of the patina in a small area above the nakago-ana. Tsuba Dia-Sho Soten Late Edo Handcrafted Katana & Wakizashi Fuchi kashira menuki
This Soten style Tsuba set is called Dia-Sho, meaning both Katana ande wakizashi size tsuba. These two pieces were produced at the end of the Edo period around the late 1800's after the war in the 16th century. Many tsuba and swords were baned. Forcing many of the fine Tsuba Craftsmen to resort to reoproductions of the Tsuba and totally banning the Katana, leaving some clever townsfolk to gathere many of the used, distroyed and broken sword pieces, and turning the useless fragments into still effective kitchen knives still used by some towns folks today. This particular set is of the Soten persuation as a decorative piece as it had to be called Edo Kinko. And were sold as is, and now are considered decorative antique Souvenirs. This may also have been Kenjo, meaning gift or presentation peice. The Tsuba/s offered here have not yet attained their desired patina or color. They have just been sitting in it's presentation box all these years. From this time on until the Haitto-rei( the banning of the wearing of swords in the ninth year of Meiji- 1876) tsuba took all shapes and forms. From the plain to the elaborate, the simple to the audacious. As time went on, it is thought that generally, just as in Nihonto, the quality of Tsuba waned as we raced towards the present day. There are of course many schools that excelled in the Edo period. Including Akasaka, Higo, Yagyu, Goto etc. It is believed by some lovers of Iron tsuba that if the Yagyu and Akasaka schools had thrived in the Kôtô period and not the Edô period, then their status would have been elevated dramatically. TSUBA w/kanji for Japanese Sword Katana or Wakizashi
For your consideration is this Iron TSUBA for a Japanese Sword. Katana or wakizashi. I aquired this tsuba in a lot with other Japanese military antiques and do not know how old it is but it has patina& wear consistant with age. There are two Japanese kanji characters on the tsuba which may be the makers name or some good luck motto- I really don't know since I can't read Japanese kanji.
