Antique Chinese or Japanese Hand Painted Porcelain Ceramic Tile Painting
Tile is approx. 4 5/8(four and 5 eights) x 4 5/8 x 3/8 inch thick. And weighs 11 oz. As you can see in the pictures. The edges are slightly slanted In the picture showing the back of the tile you see brown spots. At first glance one may think that these are adhesive residue and that the tile was glued onto something at one time. At close examination. These spots appear to have been made at the time the tile was made. These spots appear to be fine sand particles which are now permanently fused to the tile. The tile glazing appears to stop at the outline of each of these spots. In the pictures you see that the upper corners are broken off. There is a very shallow chip along the upper edge. In the shape of a 1/8 inch radius semicircle located about 1 1/2 inch from the left corner. On the bottom edge there is a tiny chip 3/4 inch from the right ... morecorner, I felt when running my nail along the tile edge. It is about 1/16 of an inch, and so shallow that I felt it because the glazing is missing on that spot. Along the left edge, in a few tiny areas the glazing is dull. At the bottom left corner there is a spot of about 1/16 radius where the glazing is dull. The metal stand seen in the pictures is not included to avoid possible damage to the tile in transit. This auction is for a 4" x 8" Rookwood Faience pottery tile featuring a left-facing griffin. I also have the paired right-facing griffin in my other auction lots. The tile is in great condition. No major chipping on the front. On the back on the bottom the tile has a chip in the non-glazed section, not visible from the front. This is vintage wall lamp that has a cute red Donkey pulling a cart of flowers. The wagon is red and green checked. That is on a white tile. There is black metal holding it in place and a bigger black metal frame around that. The shade is a beige. There is a push button to turn on the light. The shade fits over the light bulb. IT WORKS! The plug in is good. The tile measures approx just over 4" square almost 4 1/2" You can see a little rust on the black metal. The shade does have some darker brown spots. Condition is good for age. Catalina Island Pottery Large Tile Top Table w/16" Tile!
This is an offering for a very rare find indeed! A Catalina Island Pottery tile top table measuring 17" high and 24" wide. The single tile is 16" wide. Which is very rare for Catalina Island! The wood looks to be in original condition. The same table with a variation of the skirting is seen in the fine Coates Catalina Island Pottery And Tile book on page 148, while a 4-tile 16" wide design is shown on the same page. No doubt 16" pieces were much harder to produce. The tile surface is odd in that it was probably sanded, as I doubt it was never glazed. In the last picture you can see the color better in the tile as I wet it down. The tan spots on the tile are the remnants of shellac-type finish somebody put on for a gloss surface then was mostly removed.
