So if you are knowledgeable perhaps you can look through these photos and help us determine ... morewhen. And specifically what style this tapestry is. I have read a lot online, and still find it difficult to assess how old and from where this originates. I can tell you that we purchased it from an Estate Sale in Chandler, Arizona and the family was rich with items dating back to the late 1800s and many photos from that period in Virginia. From what little I know. It appears to be a French Tapestry, possibly Flemish style? Please feel free to comment on what you think. Other specifics I can relay are that the actual tapestry measures 12" by 19" with an extra inch added for the gold painted wooden frame on each side. The back of the frame has a paper covering which is slightly coming off. Consequently I thought that I would take a few photos of what's under the paper in the hopes it might help figure out more about this beautiful piece of art. It is obviously vintage by the look and feel of the wood. Paper, and discoloration over time of the materials used, which only adds to the rich quality of the aesthetic. in my opinion. Tapestry Dancer/Nice Polychrome Antique Cast Iron Bookends/Circa 1925
Up for purchase is a set of antique cast iron polychrome bookends that depict a female dancer holding a tapestry. They were manufactured circa 1925 and have no manufacturer's mark. The semi-circle base measures(at the widest points) 5 x 2.75-inches and the height is 7.25-inches. One bookend weighs 45 ounces and the other one weighs 45.4 ounces. This set is in very good condition. There is no damage to the metal surfaces such as dings. Cracks, or chips. One base has a 1/8-inch casting pit and there are tiny pits elsewhere. The gold painted surfaces have been rubbed on the bases and darkened around one face. The red dress surface has a small loss of paint around the folded area on one bookend. Overall a nice set. 1893 Columbian Exposition tapestry
This is a woven tapestry from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. According to a note attached to it from my late father, who was an American History professor and a collector of World's Fair memorabilia. There is no label on the fabric. It is almost 5' square, being 5'2 inches by 4'10" including the fringe. You can see the one hole in the second photo. The artwork shows Christopher Columbus coming ashore in the New World carrying the flag, with two of his ships, and several native people hiding in the vegetation apparently startled by his presence. The fabric feels like cotton, is tightly woven, and has absolutely no discoloration or damage other than the one hole I mentioned. I have little doubt that this is from the 1893 world's fair. Navajo Tapestry Quality Handwoven Wool 38x24" Rug Blanket Native American Indian
Hi, Thanks for looking! Up for sale is a Navajo handwoven wool rug. It has a very tight weave and measures 38 inches wide by 24 inches tall. The design is very intricate with a triple diamond bordered by eye dazzler detailing. The colors I see in this piece include dark brown. Light brown, cream, gray, orange and in some places pink mixed in with the orange. It is in near mint condition with the only flaw being a break along one edge in the middle. As a result of the break the ends are not perfectly symmetrical but as you can see from the images it is still a very nice piece! The side selvedge cords are there helping to identify it as true Navajo work. The knot count on this rug is tapestry quality. I will add an image tomorrow of a ruler next to the weave.
