Here is a wonderful hand painted vintage or antique Satsuma pottery vase. It has green bamboo accented with gold. There is also gold on the rim and a ... moreband near the base. It stands about 6" tall and is in overall excellent condition. There is a rust colored hand painted mark on the bottom. The only mark I could really determine was the top mark which I understand is the Shimazu family crest mark. I believe this vase to date to the first part of the 1900's. ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED with MAGNIFICENT GILDING JAPANESE SATSUMA SMALL VASE
Vibrantly and painstakingly crafted. Meiji Satsuma earthenware literally reflects Japanese artistry, history and culture, from the featured themes and motifs to the art form’s minute liquid gold embellishments and ivory to yellow fine-crackled glazes. Although created expressly for export, Satsuma are richly hand-painted works with stylized Japanese themes that reflect how their creators believed Westerners perceived their country— or how they wanted it to be perceived. The Satsuma art form was created during the Meiji Dynasty(1868-1912) in Kyushu, a historic ceramics center in southern Japan. By the late 19th century, Japan’s artists began participating in the Great International Fairs, for the first time promoting contact with the outside world. Their Satsuma vases, bowls and jardinières, meticulously detailed and featuring subjects ... moreforeign to western taste, caused an immediate sensation through both America and Europe. To satisfy this craze, the Satsuma techniques spread from Kyushu studios to those in Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, Yokohama and elsewhere. Many master painters, eager for business and fame, signed the bases of their creations with Japanese Kanji marks, often in cartouche. Noted for their dense ornamentation, Satsuma can be embellished with borders of varying types and patterns, including enamel, geometric, brocade, scroll, lattice work and lush floral. Many Satsuma wares reflect the Japanese love of nature by including flocks of birds, sprays of wisteria, flowering trees and winding streams. Others display picnics, market scenes, holidays, celebrations, processions and the many festivals that enrich Japanese life. Dressed in brocaded kimonos, the human subjects include geishas, Noh actors, musicians and wise men, who are shown leisurely strolling, flying kites, conversing, playing flutes, offering gifts, reading scrolls, bestowing blessings or observing the moon. Satsuma vases may be divided into two or four panels. A single vase commonly depicts contrasting themes. Although rendered with miniat

IMPRESSIVE ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD(1868-1912) SATSUMA Search Origin: Japan Age: C1868-1912. Weight: 544 grams IMPRESSIVE ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD(1868-1912) SATSUMA VASE Description: A genuine 19 th Century Japanese Meiji period ovoid vase with shallow flared rim. The side panels decorated with exotic birds amongst blossoming foliage and figures approaching a nobleman, raised on a circular foot. Painstakingly hand painted with beautifully detailed period decoration in gilt and various polychrome enamels(moriage) The crackling(Kannyu) of the soft. Creamy glaze is typical and makes the vase look more antique in appearance, however this effect was used more to give richness and depth to the colours. The enamel and gilding is applied on top of the glaze so that it stands proud of the surface. The vase dates ... morecirca 1890. Basic information: Satsuma pottery dates back to the 16th century and is still produced today. This region in southern Japan is around the Kagoshima region. The distinguishing features of Satsuma ceramics are they have an ivory. Creamy or off-white and sometime beige appearance. The pottery is then hand painted with brightly coloured enamels, gold and silver, in fine, intricate designs with careful attention to detail. The finest details were painted using a single rat’s hair. This allowed the painter to create lifelike expressions on faces and exquisite detailing on robes. Most Satsuma artists brought glazed blanks from potters and decorated them freehand with traditional Japanese motifs and patterns such as foliage and flowers, landscapes, real and mythical birds and human figures engaged in ceremonial, military, or domestic activities. The thin translucent glaze with its applied design decoration deliberately ends up with a crackled finish. PAIR OF ANTIQUE JAPANESE SATSUMA VASES WITH MEIJI PERIOD MARKS
Japanese Satsuma earthenware is somewhere between porcelain and pottery. It originated in the late 16th century.During the Azuchi-Momoyama period. And is still produced today. Although the term can be used to describe a variety of types of pottery, the best known type of Satsuma ware has a soft, ivory-colored,crackled glaze with thick enamels and gold leaf. Often in elaborate decoration and depicting themes directly from the Japanese ethos of legends, court life, and artistic values. The Meiji Period runs from 1868 to 1912 and during this time there were many events that shaped Japan and also the pottery and porcelain that was being made. The Satsuma Clan who were based on the same southern island of Japan and from the area responsible for creating the exquisite pottery began a revolt against the government as they were not happy with the ... moredirection they were taking. The Satsuma Samurai rose up against the army of the Meiji government. Swords against guns. The uprising was swiftly crushed by the government army but the tales of the rebellion and uprising live on in the pottery and art from that period. Images of war. Of the Samurai- notably Saigo Takamori or Kido Koin both important figures in this era appear on the sides of the Satsuma Vases and bowls, fighting for their beliefs. Satsuma Pottery from the Meiji Period is a apopular choice amongst collectors and antique buyers due to the historic time when it was created as well as the fine craftsmanship and quality. For your consideration a pair of an outstanding quality antique Japanese Satsuma Vases with Meiji period mark(1868-1912) The enamel work and relief dragon on both vases are done very well. They both decorated with a battle scenes. Samurai in suits of armour atop their horses wrestle on shore of a river. The scene is very interesting and has a lot of images. Vases are very heavy and in good condition. There is a small chip on top of one vase. Dimensions: 7 inches high and about 3 inches wide; 1.4 lb.weight(together) Thank you for looking. If you

Vintage/Antique Japanese Satsuma Pottery Hand Painted Bamboo Vase Shimazu Mark

It stands about 6" tall and is in overall excellent condition. There is a rust colored hand painted mark on the bottom. The only mark I could really determine was the top mark which I understand is the Shimazu family crest mark. I believe this vase to date to the first part of the 1900's. KOSHIDA Shimazu Japanese Satsuma Miniature Covered Ginger Jar Vase Exotic Bird
VINTAGE KOSHIDA SHIMAZU JAPANESE SATSUMA MINIATURE COVERED GINGER JAR SIGNED I SHIP WORLDWIDE IMPORTANT BIDDING AND PAYMENT INFORMATION: IF YOU PLAN TO BID ON THIS ITEM AND ARE THE HIGH BIDDER I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THAT YOU DO NOT PAY ME UNTIL YOU RECEIVE MY INVOICE NOT THE INVOICE THAT IS GENERATED IMMEDIATELY AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE SALE BY EBAY. Ebay now has rules that all sellers MUST ship items for which they have been paid within one business day without exception. Those who follow my sales and have bought from me over the years know that I have always had a policy of shipping within 24 hours of a sale(see my feedback) However, there are times when I am out of town unexpectedly for a house call, an auction or an estate call and it simply is not possible to get to the post office in time. Also, if you find that there is more than one ... moreitem you are interested in bidding on over a given time period and would like to take advantage of combined shipping, please again, DO NOT pay me until the last of those items you're watching has finished. I will then send you an invoice with an adjusted shipping fee which saves on postage. I never charge a"handling fee" I would rather wait a few days on a payment and extend you the advantage of lower shipping fees than to be paid immediately- not ship- and then be scored negatively by eBay for not shipping soon enough. Offered in this sale is an adorable Japanese Satsuma covered miniature ginger jar decorated with a finely painted and gold gilt exotic bird- perhaps pheasant. It is marked on the underside of the base which you can see illustrated in the 2nd image. I actually found an on-line reference site for Satsuma marks which describes this mark as"Koshida under the Shimazu family crest" It dates to the early 1900s. It measures 5 1/2" tall x 3" wide at its widest. The condition is mint. There are no chips. Cracks, flakes, hairlines or restoration of any kind. In addition, there is no wear to the original gold gilt. A really sweat piece that i
