Ancient Roman Imperial Silver Denarius VITELLIUS - Concordia
Ancient Silver | Roman Imperial Coinage VITELLIUS Denarius RIC 90 69 AD Rome Silver 19mm An intro to Roman Imperial Coins. It is difficult to put into a paragraph or two the scope and sweep of types and denominations that make up what we call Roman Imperial Coinage. The corpus spans enormous social. Political and economic changes over a period of half a milennium. It was built upon the traditions of the late Republican and Imperatorial period. Beginning with Augustus’ continuation of, mainly, the denominations already in circulation in 27 B.C. it quickly developed its own suite of standardized denominations that would continue to be recognizable until the beginning of the 3rd century A.D. Ah. But the types and style– these grew in number and evolved in sophistication quickly from stereotypical“S– C’s” and“Seated Livias” into a veritable smorgasboard ... moreof deities, personifications, depictions, and downright propaganda– always with the all-important Imperial portrait to make sure you never forgot“The Golden Rule” He who issues the gold, rules! This tradition of portrait and widely varying reverses was one that managed to survive the absolute demolition of the centuries-old Aureus, Denarius, Sestertius, As system, carried on through the chaos of the single-denomination Antoninianus period, through the reforms of Diocletian, and, with some diminution of variety, right up to the reforms of Anastasius and the end of Roman coinage as we know it at the beginning of the Byzantine age. So if all you know of the art and history of coins is what George Washington or Thomas Jefferson looked like in profile. Prepare yourself for an adventure. Abandon your preconceptions, open your mind, and above all dig those beautiful coins, man! Contributed by Mark Lehman) VITELLIVS Reigned: 69 A.D. Authentic Ancient Roman Coin CONSTANS TWIN VICTORIES Siscia Mint 31-40 known C2
Up for auction is an Authentic Ancient Roman Coin. CONSTANS TWIN VICTORIES. Coin measures about 16mm. FRONT/ CONSTAN- S PF AVG. Rosette diadem, draped and cuirassed. BACK/ VICTORIAE DD AVGGQ NN, two Victories facing each other holding wreaths and palm branches, in lower center: palm branch upright. Mintmark: BSIS. Siscia Mint. Struck 347- 348. Ref: RIC VIII Siscia 195, page 363, rated C2. C2 = 31- 40 examples known. 16mm. Constans 337- 350 AD. The middle child of Constantine's three surviving sons, Constans inherited the domains of Italy and the Roman provinces in Africa after the death of his father in 337. No sooner than this happened Constans and Constantine II began squabbling over who got what and the latter meant to settle the issue with his army. However, luck remained with Constans who easily appropriated all of Constantine II's ... moreformer territories when Constantine died in battle; thus becoming the de facto ruler of the West. He held onto power for another 10 years until the embattled Constantius II raised eyebrows within his own army and his top general, Magnentius, proclaimed himself the emperor. Bereft of an army, Constans had no real power and escaped as best he could. His former soldiers found him hiding in a temple, dragged him out of it and killed him. NOTES: Resizing is available. 14kt solid white gold setting is also available. DETAIL: In ancient Mediterranean cultures(including the Greeks. Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) sapphire was regarded as an antidote to black magic and effects of evil spirits, and provided protection against sorcery. It was believed to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references ... moreto the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. The oldest sapphire jewelry unearthed by archaeologists has been of Etruscan origin, about sixth century B.C. The Greeks and Romans are known to have worn sapphires from Ceylon, as described by writers from those times. A handsome, richly colored natural bright blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is a very handsome precious gemstone, with very rich texture and a medium royal blue color. Though in the 19th century this would have been considered a very nice quality gemstone(and priced accordingly) by today’s standards it is rather average. It is by and large near eye clean, though certainly not flawless, and of higher value transparent character as opposed to lower value translucent and opaque sapphires. Though merely average by today’s standards, it is nonetheless exceptional given its history. Of course most sapphire gemstones are anywhere from lightly

Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ... morering was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. AUREUS OF Roman Empire. Carinus 282, AV 4.76g. gold roman coin
The Roman Empire. Carinus caesar. 282–283. Aureus 282, AV 4.83g. M AVR CARINVS NOB CAES Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust r. Rev. PAX A–ETERNA Pax walking l. holding olive branch and sceptre. Very rare. Struck on a very large flan, lustrous and extremely fine. Carinus(Latin: Marcus Aurelius Carinus Augustus; died 285) was Roman Emperor from 282 to 285. The elder son of emperor Carus. He was appointed Caesar and co-emperor of the western portion of the empire upon his father's accession. Official accounts of his character and career have been filtered through the propaganda of his successful opponent, Diocletian. He fought with success against the Germanic Quadi tribes. But soon left the defence of the Upper Rhine to his legates and returned to Rome, where the surviving accounts, which demonize him, assert that he abandoned himself to ... moreall kinds of debauchery and excess. More certainly, he celebrated the annual ludi Romani on a scale of unexampled magnificence. After the death of Carus. The army in the east demanded to return to Europe, and Numerian, the younger son of Carus, was forced to comply. During a halt at Chalcedon, Numerian was found dead. Diocletian, commander of the body-guards, claimed that Numerian had been assassinated, and he was proclaimed emperor by the soldiers. Carinus left Rome at once and set out for the east to meet Diocletian. On his way through Pannonia he put down the usurper Sabinus Iulianus and encountered the army of Diocletian in Moesia. Death in 285 Carinus was successful in several engagements. At the Battle of the Margus River(Morava) According to one account, the valour of his troops had gained the day, but Carinus was assassinated by a tribune whose wife he had seduced. Another account represents the battle as resulting in a complete victory for Diocletian, and Carinus' army deserted him. This account is confirmed by the fact that Diocletian kept in service Carinus' Praetorian Guard commander, Titus Claudius Aurelius Aristobulus. Character Carinus has the reputation

Augustus initially allowed the rulers of the conquered peoples(often called subject kings) to remain in power and deal with their own lands. Eventually local squabbles, often over royal succession, would lead to the rulers to be replaced by Roman governors, and the countries then incorporated into Rome's provinces. To replenish this loss, Augustus contributed large amounts of his own income to the treasury, aided and abetted expansively by the newly received wealth of Egypt(This public-spirited"generosity" of course being carefully recorded in his public memoirs. For all the propaganda value that it was worth- but he did finally manage to balance Rome's budget. Among other benefits. As a result and a necessity for a secure royal income, Augustus kept Egypt
