I'm not exactly sure what purpose this beautifully colored Mayan bead served! It was sourced in the Highlands of Guatemala. It likely had some function related to they tie off at the back of a necklace. Or was used to separate the strands in a multiple strand necklace. It's impossible to say for sure. It's remarkable for its color. It was crafted, not from jadeite, but from some other very green stone material. This measures 18 inches and this is what I know about it: it was given to me in 1988 as a wedding present. The woman who gave it to me was from Cali. Colombia and she bought a lot of pre-columbian jewelry with the intent to sell it in the US. She was not allowed to export it and only kept a few of the pieces for herself. When she gave it to me she said it was over 500 years old. She was a woman I trusted but I can't confirm any of this. As soon as I got it, I had it restrung with a new clasp. Last week we took it to a prestigious Denver jewelry appraiser. All he could confirm is that it's jade, quartz and either gold-plated brass or plain brass. I've worn it twice.

May be some candle wax residue in bowl. There was a fair amount of dust on this item when it was photographed and shows especially on the jagged rim of the bowl. ADDED DETAILS: This is an unusual piece depicting a 4-legged figure with a bowl/vessel on its back. The face is typical for the region-slit eyes. Beaked nose and broad spool ears. The high headress becomes part of the razor-jagged-edge of the bowl. The bowl is broad and deep and is dark. Possibly from incense or small ceremonial burnings. Ancient Pre-Columbian Narino Olla/Pot C.1200 AD Pre-Columbian Narino Olla/Pot C.1200 AD This is an ancient Pre-Columbian Narino Indian olla(a type of pot) from the area of modern Columbia/Ecuador. And dating to around 1000-1400 A.D. There is some black painted decoration remaining to the exterior, consisting of vertical stripes and diamond shapes, and it is a delightful example of typical Narino redware. Black dendrites. Or manganese deposits, which take several centuries to develop) are evident throughout the surface and clearly authenticate the age of this wonderful artefact, which(apart from the visible surface losses) is in excellent condition with no cracks or restoration, just several small, shallow chips to the rim.
