Here is a Mayan eccentric or exotic from the Yucatan Peninsula of South America. These items were thought to have been used as an offering to the underworld ... moregods asking their premission to enter their underworld domain(a cave) The Maya could then ask a blessing or maybe advice on some delima they were facing. It's 3 1/4 inch long and 1 in. wide x 1/4 in thk. at max. made of a light white or tan Chalcedony or Colha chert patinated with white over the ages. A really nice piece worthy of anyones collection! Three varieties of polychrome pottery is a characteristic of this culture: Pinto Polychrome, Gila Polychrome, Tonto Polychrome. However Salado pottery can be divided into 32 known types ... moreand variants. Under picture, card reads"Excavated from private property near Safford, Arizona. Card contains picture of an example of intact pottery and"Gila Polychrome 1300-1600 A.D. Nice presentation of some very nice, very old fragments.
