Superb Pre-Columbian Chorrera stamp seal/sello
This listing is for the best Pre-Columbian stamp seal I have ever owned. I obtained this one in a collection of a local collector who had a penchant for stamp seals. He had 10 in his Pre-Columbian collection and this was the best. This piece has a lot going for it. Most importantly the iconography. The stamp seal contains 3 panels,each showing a stylized pregnant female in the birthing position.very rare to find depictions like that. I could see this stamp being used for a Pre-Columbian version of our baby shower or birth celebration. Also quite unusual, the handle is a rattle too(not very loud today though) From the Chorrera culture of Ecuador, it is intact save a chip on top front. Also has correct patination, manganese deposits and remnants of ancient pigment, all great indicators of it's authenticity. Fine Patina- Museum Quality Condition: Very Good 10 1/2" height The Tairona ceramic chronologies range from 200 BCE to 1650 CE. And the Caribbean coast of Colombia has evidence of ceramics from at least 2500 BCE. Recent investigations in Chengue, Parque Tairona by the Colombian archaeologist Alejandro Dever show significant variations in the ceramic that allow for a chronological division of sequence into at least five phases. The first phase, called Nahuange 1, appears to start at around 200 BCE and ends at around 500 CE when there appears to be a peak in the population. A second phase spans from 500 CE to about 900 CE; it can be called Nehuange 2, and was called Buritaca after detailed ... moreexcavations by Jack Wynn in the 1970s. From c. 900 CE began what is commonly called the Tairona period, characterized by an impressive increase in the variation, size and number of ceramic forms, many conserving the styles from the Nehuange or Buritaca phases. Recently acquired at a Bucks County PA estate auction is an interesting hand carved stone figure. The estate had other artifacts that appeared said to be made by North American Indian(probably eastern PA) Not certain as to its age or where it is from. My uneducated guess is that it is from central or South America. About 4 lbs and 7 1/4 inches long Figural carving is of a man that is holding cistern which has a similar man's face carved in it. Again I'm not certain what. If anything, that this signifies or not. Or to the dating of this item. So my opinion is that this is a later reproduction. You be the judge. This piece is an authentic excavated figural fragments made of ceramic terracotta and likely a Post Classic period in Central Mexico. The figural looks Aztec to our uneducated eye. A wonderful and very high quality ancient Nayarit earthenware figure. Dating to approximately 100 B.C. 100 A.D. from Mexico. An enchanting female figure. She sits on a stylized chair. Leaning forwards at the viewer, a suckling infant under her right arm. Each ear decorated with three spools, the nose pierced with ring, the tall mass of incised hair unpainted. A thick collar or choker around her neck. Beautiful and fascinating dendrite formations lie all over the figure. Formed over the millennia and testament to this object's extreme age. Ancient Mexicans left no written records. Thus their material remains are the only existing link to this long gone and intriguing peoples. A wonderful Ancient Phase 6 Nazca Earthenware beaker. Dating to approximately 250- 540 A.D. A charming. Tall cylindrical vessel with rounded base and subtly everted mouth. Profusely decorated with painted images in five horizontal bands. Showing a series of conjoined female heads with oval/rectangular mouths, almond shaped eyes and braided sections of hair. The rest of the vase is adorned with colourful geometric patterns. Painted in red, grey, orange, brown and white. The ancient Nazca culture. A superb. Well provenanced, published ancient Pre-Columbian ritual libation vessel, from the Chimu culture, dating to 700- 1470 A.D. A fascinating ancient vessel of ovoid form. Surmounted by two tapered spouts. The piece decorated on its shoulders with moulded depictions of animals and whorls on a dotted or stippled ground. Plant forms, perhaps maize or pacae leaves lie around the neck. This piece was once thought to be a product of the Patavilca. However similar shaped vessels with designs of this type have been excavated in the Moche River Valley and are now known to date to the Middle Chimu period. The Chimú are perhaps best known for their distinctive black glazed pottery. Strongly influenced by their predecessors, the Moche. Provenance: This beautiful deep blue celt. Was found by my 14 year old son about 1:00 pm on 6/14/13. I believe it to be a Caddoan Indian artifact, since we live in the Saline river valley, the middle fork, near Jessieville, Arkansas. This implement, is one of the finest examples of a weighted hide scraper thatI have ever seen, anywhere. It is also one of the sharpest, I have ever touched. The celt is eight& 7/8's inches long and weighs 13.5 ounces. A sharp and hefty tool for skinning whitetail deer. We have found many artifacts here, because the Saline river runs through our farm. Except for the poll, which is classic Mayan style. There is one ancient chip on the corner of the bit, which has the same mineral deposits and age as the rest of the celt.
