This is a fantastic example of a early pantry box and would make a great addition to your collection or shop inventory. Displays nicely. No matter how technologically advanced Americans have become in the years since the Mayflower first dropped anchor, one thing has consistently plagued housekeepers, critters in the pantry. Colonial women kept dairy products and grains well away from the cooking hearth, in small rooms called butteries. Like todays homemakers, they fought an ongoing battle to keep bugs and mice away from flour, sugar, and other dry comestibles whose storage posed a problem until the introduction of covered stoneware crocks and their even more expedient successor, the pantry box. Food storage boxes were imported from Europe until American factories began producing them during the late 18th century. Some were varnished plain wood, but many were painted in pretty colors that brightened a plain corner when stacked floor-to-ceiling. Even the Shakers, who shunned worldly excess, often finished their immaculately constructed by boxes in cheerful shades of blue, red, yellow, and green. Typically, pantry boxes and dry measures were issued in nesting sets of graduated size, with the largest meant for storing slabs of cheese or butter, the smallest for pills or spices, and the in-between sizes for everything else. The bentwood handle is attached by wooden pegs(one of the pegs was broken long ago but still functions perfectly) There is some loss around the rim of the lid. But does not interrupt the natural patina of this beautiful piece. Square head copper nails were used. Along with a few others, it almost looks like the others may have been added later, for strength i am guessing. Nice Old Country Bentwood Storage Box We're please to offer for your consideration this wonderful antique country primitive pantry box. These were used for storage of dry goods/staples in the 1800s. This came from a country estate auction in Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Condition is pretty good for its age and use. With some damage and separation at the bottom, as shown in the pictures. There is a split in the lid that has an early repair on the inside-a strip of leather tacked on to stabilize the lid. Up for auction is a 6" large round tin covered tea caddy storage container recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It is a great size storing dry items such as tea. This piece has a base diameter if approximately 4 1/4" and an opening diameter of approximately 2 3/4" in size. The interior is very clean. About as clean as as one gets. This old portable pantry spice cabinet/ coffee grinder is marked Patented 1887 on bottom of spice cans which are brass. Good working coffee grinder which has a large coffee storage tank. Also tanks for water. All tank caps are included and in good shape and screw off and on fine. Considerable wear to print on front which is butterflies on one side and a stork or flamingo on the other. This was used in chuck wagons out in the pasture or right at the ranch. There is a hole in the bottom which is not part of any of the 3 holding tanks. It is in the lower cupboard area and can be seen in the 10th photo on the far right edge. It is 36" tall and 26" wide and 14" deep. Bottom doors are not closing properly. Left door closes but right side is to tight and will not close. Primitive Old Cupboard with(3) Shelves. Nicely darkened with age, measuring 19" high x 12-1/4" wide x 5-3/4" deep. Notice the shelves extend about 1" beyond the sides- nice. When I purchased this, it had(3) screws sticking out the back to attach to a wall. I have removed them, but the holes are there for you if you choose to hang on the wall. I've added a small Red Drawer at the bottom, made from an Old Pint Measure and added a Porcelain like knob to the front. Inside the drawer is an Old Pyrex Bottle, possibly a baby bottle with the ounces embossed on the side. Also inside the drawer are(2) wooden utensils- 1 spoon and 1 fork. Vintage set of 4 tin canisters. 1970's lime green. Vivid patterns. made by Pantry Queen and on the side of the large on it says Joan Stevens. They range in height from 8" 7 1/2" 7" and 6 1/2" The tops are all in good condition and are made of plastic. The tins are all in good condition, except for some scratches from the lids on the top of the canisters and inside the large one there was some light rust and pitting. 19C Stack Of 3 Oval Pantry Boxes Swallow Tail Finger Laps In Old Blue Paint!
Here is a wonderful stack of three 19C pantry boxes! Found together. Oval shaped in their original blue paint, swallow tail finger lapping& copper tacks& wooden pegs. The smallest pantry box measures 7-1/2" x 3-1/2" h. There is damage with pieces broken off the lid. The pieces were found inside the box& could be re-attached. There are no other issues with the box. The second medium size box measures 10" x 4-1/4"h. The paint is most worn on this box& there is an area on the lid about 1" of wood break.Some marks inside on the base& remnants of glue repair on the top of the swallow tail lap of the box. The largest& bottom of the stack pantry measures 11-1/4" x 5"h. The base of the pantry is missing approx. 3" of wood& is pictured.There is a strip of wood on the top of the pantry ... moreabout 8" that is loose& could be glued for repair. Small Early Antique Wood and Tin Pantry Box White Milk Paint Shaker Label
I painted and distressed this 1860s pantry box with milk paint and sealed it with matte varnish. Giving it a reproduction Shaker label that looks very authentic. 4" diameter and 3-3/4" tall, the base has a spot that is coming away from the steel band, it is sturdy still. This 1800s pantry jar is about 5-1/2" diameter and 7" tall. The top rim is worn with age. There is a small crack on the bottom edge. The lid was painted white, but done badly, so I repainted and distressed it, very pretty now. The rag balls and the other items shown are being sold separately-I can often ship several items for just a bit more than one alone, so do have a look! Primitive Old Pantry Bin / Large Round Box - Brownstone - Farmhouse Drieds
Primitive"Farmhouse Pantry Drieds" Container. This was an old Soap container- never used- I got it from the factory in Pa. where the Soap was made. It is very thick Cardboard and is very sturdy. I've painted this one in Brownstone on both the base and the lid and added a stained Muslin Label"Farmhouse Pantry Drieds" 1861. And wrapped around the cylinder about 6 times with twine. Also added is a metal"make do" handle, wrapped with muslin and twine. This awesome container is clean in the inside and measures 13"in diameter x 21" tall, plus 2-1/2" for the handle. Great storage container. NOTE: On the back side, there is a dent approx. 4" x 4" x approx. 1/2" deep. I tried to get a picture of it, but didn't do so good.
