There is an extensive number of stunning pieces displayed, and the photography is simply incredible. I have never seen such a visual feast of these amazing items before in my life. Have a look an the images below. My poor digital camera cannot come close to capturing the vivid detail of the book. There is an English essay about Kiseruzutsu contained in the book. The second feature is on Yatate. Or, Portable Japanese Writing Brush and Inkwell Utensil. This again is a visual cornucopia of these beautifully made accessories. This feature is not quite as extensive as the Kiseruzutsu section, but it is nonetheless and important work on these items. Generally speaking, good ... morevisual reference material on Yatate is quite rare, so this book represents an important reference for those interested in them. The third feature is a VERY extensive display of Jutte. These are special sword-snagging batons used by Edo Era police officers. Many of these Jutte had exquisite tsuka(handles) and tsuba(hand guards) Similar to swords. Although the section on Jutte is really a bonus feature of this book, as a stand alone piece, it's probably one of the nicest photographic collection of Jutte available, even when compared to rather well known books dedicated to the subject; so, this book is a must for Jutte and/or Japanese Sword aficionados. Although tobacco cases. Brush holders, and sword snagging batons may seem like strange bed fellows for an art book, they were rendered with nearly unbelievable craftsmanship, and we can see the essence of Japanese design esthetics in all three. Wooden Crafted Stands& Shelves What's a netsuke: Netsuke is a miniature sculptures that were invented in 17th century Japan to serve a practical function(the two Japanese characters ne+tsuke mean"root" and"to attach" Traditional Japanese garment—robes called kosode and kimono—had no pockets. However men who wore them needed a place to store their personal belongings such as pipes, tobacco, money, seals, or medicines. Their solution was to place such objects in containers(called ... moresagemono) hung by cords from the robes' sash( obi) The containers may be a pouch or a small woven basket. But the most popular were beautifully crafted boxes( inro) Which were held shut by an ojime. Which were sliding beads on cords. Whatever the form of the container, the fastener that secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke. Netsuke. Like the inro and ojime, evolved over time from being strictly utilitarian into objects of great artistic merit and an expression of extraordinary craftsmanship. Such objects have a long history reflecting the important aspects of Japanese folklore and life. Netsuke production was most popular during the Edo period in Japan. Around 1615-1868. Today, the art lives on and some modern works can command high prices in the UK, Europe, the USA, Japan and elsewhere.
