A netsuke is a form of small sculpture which developed in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years. Netsuke served both functional and aesthetic purposes. The kimono. The traditional form of Japanese dress, had no pockets. Women would tuck small personal items into their sleeves, but men suspended their tobacco pouches, pipes, purses or writing implements, on a silk cord, from their obi(sash) These hanging objects are called sagemono. To stop the cord from slipping through the obi, a small toggle was attached. This toggle is called a netsuke. The most popular pronunciation is net-ski. While the actual Japanese is closer to netskeh) A sliding bead(ojime) was strung on the cord between the netsuke and the sagemono to tighten or loosen the opening of the sagemono. The entire ensemble was then worn, at the waist, and functioned as a sort of removable hip pocket. It is dark in colour but some of the photos are taken in brighter light so you can see the detail. Shishi-guchi means lion's mouth. Face of the mythical barking lion-dog. The Shishi-guchi mask is used for the lion spirit in Scene II of Shakkyo from the play that all Kabuki lion dances are derived. Beads have forever been a part of history. Covering virtually every culture. Although most beads are used to embellish and adorn. They also serve a number of other functions, which covers political events, social circumstances, religious beliefs, symbolism of curative powers, and have even been used as currency. Many of the ojime beads made from ivory were first carved in China’s Heibei province. However. During the mid-1980s, ivory was banned at which time ojime beads were made from boxwood. Many master carvers can create up to five to ten designs and while some will vary in color. The density and fine grain are what makes them unique. ORIGINAL ANTIQUE AUTHENTIC japanese netsuke in a gourd flask form decorated with fishes. Seaweed and wonderful calligraphic poem. Netsuke made circa 1860-1880 in Kyoto School of Netsuke. Real material(word star ts from I ends with Y. That I shouldn't write because of ebay restrictions) NOT a fake. Bone, mammoth or something like that and beautifully carved with good etching of all details and has a wonderful patina. Superb wear. All elements of the image are tiny, the size of each hieroglyph is less then 1 mm. The small crack was on the material before the artist started to work and you could see how he use this defect in his work and had created a beautiful long seaweed along this flaw. I believe there is a sign on the bottom of the netsuke(see the last photo) It looks like"Setsu" but I'm not sure about it.
