Fresh out of an up state New York estate a samurai era sword guard. Tsuba for a Tanto, knife length sword. It is made of forged iron with a sea wave modified engraved over the entire surface. Wave crests are highlighted in gold dots with some missing and sea shells in gold foil, with some wear as to be expected from an used item this old. There is no other damage and the guard retains its deep chocolate patina, see pictures. This sword has been mounted as evidenced by the copper shim placed in the opening for the tang of a sword. This is a Japanese army officer`s sword in mountings. The blade is signed"Shoshinshi Fukumoto Kanemune saku 正真子福本兼宗作" With 昭 arsenal inspection stamp on the tang. Kanmune is son of Amahide. Made swords at his father's factory in Seki city, Gifu prefectuer during WWll time period, listed in John Slough's book page 50. The blade is in old polish, shows aged stain on surface but no deep rust and in good condition. The temper line is wavy gunome temper pattern throughout the blade and has o-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaws at all. There is no bend. No nicks, no crack and cutting edge is very sharp. The scabbard is wood scabbard, shows minor lacquer loss but no crack, no bend and leather cover is not presented. The handle is tight fit, tsuka-ito wrapping is no loose. Very nice flowers and vines etc. It is the copper type that is usually used on Army(and sometimes Navy) officer's swords. It is in decent condition. Good detail, nice dark patina, the gold highlights are still there. There may be some dirt but i did not clean it. Genuine item used for a WWII Japanese sword. Maybe you have a sword and this would complete it. Or great to have a spare. Original parts are getting hard to find. These are quite often missing as i read that officer's removed them to keep them from rattling or making noise. *EXCELLENT* WWII Japanese Army Officer Sword SHIN GUNTO Original World War 2
Item Description: This is an original Japanese army officers sword in Shin Gunto mountings from World War 2. The blade is in Excellent condition and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. It is a healthy sword and has a blade length of 26inches(66cm) The hada is a tight and visible ko-itame. The hamon is a straight suguha hamon that is present the length of the blade ending.The blade is hand made around 1943 with unsigned tang. The mountings are Type 98 Shin Gunto and in Near MINT condition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. The nice original company commander tassel is mint condition. The tsuba is classic WW2 with eight accompanying metal seppa. The saya(scabbard) is painted green and shows only one small dent described in the picture with retaining roughly 95-97% original finish. There is a locking mechanism ... moreand it works perfectly and tightly. The blade is in Excellent condition. There are no nicks along the edge. There is no either surface rust ir scratches along the blades length. Overall. I think this piece would be a superb addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords. WWII Japanese Army Officers Dress Parade Sword w/Scabbard & Bag
WWII Japanese Army Officers Dress Parade Sword with Scabbard and Sword Bag. The grip spine has a silver disc representing a family crest. Unmarked ricasso. The black grip has twisted wire wrap that is incomplete and slightly loose. The grip is also loose with a chip missing. Blade is unsharpened but is scratched. Scabbard is dented and bent towards the drag, also the throat piece is on backwards. Leather washer intact. Blade measures 31" sword is 36 1/2" and in the scabbard it measures 37 7/8" Check out my other War Swords!
