Solid Cherry.....English Antique Furniture Eastlake dresser commode...circa 1810
This is a charming English made solid cherry antique dresser circa 1810. I acquired this from a couple who came to the United States from England. This piece is consistent with English cabinetmaking.This is made from solid cherry planks. The candle stands which flank the mirror are wonderful.The carvings and hand turned finials are beautiful. The hardware is all original except for the 2 small upper drawers which is new. All of the lower drawers have locks which work excellently with a new key. The hand cut dovetail joinery and hand chamfered drawer bottoms are beautiful. The drawer fronts are 1" thick solid cherry, there is no veneer on this entire piece.The secondary wood is poplar. The mirror glass is new.The mirror is on tilting mounts(it does not stay fixed when tilted. Just let in hang vertically) This piece has lots of battle ... morescars(nicks, dings etc) and some repairs earned over its lifetime such as dings in both side panels about the size of a"pea" The top(across the full width.left to right) has an age separation shrinkage crack which I repaired(you can still tell there was a crack despite the repair(see photo) some drawer bottoms have age shrinkage separations,there are some age shrinkage separations(cracks) in the side panels, worn edges, small stains in the top and character marks consistent with any fine antique.I refinished the top and the mirror frame, after repairing a missing piece of wood around the mirror thumb screw. The inlaid brass keyhole escutcheons are all in place. Most of the dresser has the original finish with a gorgeous patina as you can easily see in the mirror support photos etc. This wonderful piece will look beautiful wherever you decide to place it whether an entryway. Bedroom or living room.I restored all of the drawers and reinforced some internally with wood blocking.The drawers are strong, stable and they slide excellently.I t has such delicate graceful lines which sets it apart from the crowd. all the best. It is possibly a salesman sample but it's size suggest that it was a child's dish cabinet. Birds, fans, and flowers show the Japanese influence in the design. When a pattern has two names, it usually means there were two venues for selling it, like jewelry stores and mail order houses. The dies were also owned by more than one maker, so this pattern appears with a variety of marks, including Rogers, Holmes& Edwards, James Tufts, and Montgomery Ward. The latter was ... morea mark used for sale exclusively through the department store chain. One of the forks offered here is marked Wm Rogers& Son, and the other is marked Holmes& Edwards. When entertaining, there is always the problem of what to use with the dessert course. Taking everyone's salad fork to wash up and returning them for dessert is difficult to do very gracefully. The pastry fork is designed for eating the dessert and can be laid on the table with the regular silver. Pastry forks are used for eating just about any kind of baked dessert, which to upgrade the food offerings get to travel under the heading of pastry even if they are just pies. The pastry fork has one tine thicker than the rest that is used for cutting the food into bite sized pieces. This tine also tends to taper to a point, so it can be used as a probe to check for things like cherry pits. Biting a cherry pit is a memorable experience. This auction is for 1 set only. Each will have to be bid on separately. Today you will find some great Eastlake Victorian Hardware. This is in as found condition to protect the patina. Some paint maybe found on them. There is only one knob set screw with the set. The set appears to be brass or bronze and would be a great find for your project. A magnet does stick so they appear to be just plated. It is a great fancy pattern on knob. Faceplate and lockset. The lock set has the letters BLW on the side. I have found no other markings but have seen this pattern listed before. Magnificent antique American carved walnut free-standing cheval mirror circa 1875. The mirror is beautifully carved with a shell motif to the top of the mirror. The cheval has the original bevelled mirror and is housed in a harp shaped base. The mirror has the original gilded bronze handles that can be turned to adjust the angle of the mirror, the base having four legs both the harp and legs have corresponding carving to the crest.
