Emil J. Paidar 1929 Podiatry Chair - Different Than most Doctor Barber Chairs
Up for sale is working non-referb Emil J. Paidar Company chair. I was told this chair was used in a Podiatrists office and was purchased in an estate sale in 1989. I cannot confirm this. I got the chair from gentleman which made the purchase from the estate. To my knowledge I am the 3rd owner. I have maintained the chair. Cleaning, polish the metal, added oil to the pump and other items over the years. This chair has been my baby since 1993. The chair used to have a sticker under the seat which listed the manufacture info but this is also long gone. I used this chair everyday in my studio for over 10yrs. I did take a pic of the serial number, please see the pics. The arms are what make this chair different than most you see on the net. If you look at the pics you will see there is no way to attach the arms to the chair body at the front underside. ... moreThe arms lower swivel or completely remove from the chair body. Most of the barber chair arms attach and do not move. I am unsure as to why this chair is different. It works. It pumps and does not leak off. I have 6 chairs of this type and this one is by far my favorite. My hope is that it will find someone able to restore it and make it shine again. It has some rips and tears but no rust, dents. I am unsure if this chair had a headrest as there is no mount for one but if it did the rest is long gone. The chair doers have somwe tears but no one has attempted to restore it. The arms, foot rest, swivel and pump all work great. The back also tilts and holds in place. This is a very nice chair. 3mths ago I seen a brother to this chair in an antique store in New Orleans for sale at $18000.00. Yea. I about crapped kittens on the spot! While I do not expect the sale price to be even close to this I do feel whoever gets this chair will get a bargain. Origins In the 1890's. Ernest Koken had already began working on his hydraulic lift barber chair design. RETRO Chrome Vinyl Child Baby Convertible Rocking Reclining Booster Barber Chair
This is a great"Blast from the Past" Retro 1950's Chrome& Aqua/ Turquoise Vinyl Child/ Baby Chair We call it the Transformer of children's chairs It is a rocking chair. Yet the rocking platform can be removed so that it becomes a regular chair or booster seat. It reclines and can be set at 2 different angles. The leg rest can be set at different angles. Or removed if you like. The chrome foot rest can be flipped up, or also removed. The padded arm rests can be set at different lengths, or removed. The padded sides can be removed. We thought that it would have made a great child's barber chair. I fear that I have missed something that this transforming chair is capable of doing. The chrome is still nice and shiny with very little surface rust on the bottom of the legs- nothing major and it's mostly on the bottom ... morethat sits on the floor. The aqua/ turquoise vinyl that was so popular in the 1950's is in great condition with the only real issue that I can see is the small tear at the very top(see pic 12) Chair measures 25" tall on the rocking platform& 22 1/2" without the rocker. At first I did not like it, but with some great taste you can add a really neat vintage nob to it and make it look cleaner. The Handle is used to lock or unlock the chair from spinning. It works perfectly. Head Rest- Twin Prongs. Push Button Release, Rollers. Decorative Sides and Koken name on Mounting Hardware(very nice) Foot Rest- Double Plates w/ Original Brackets. Flips up and down one side sho wing the green upholstery. The other Metal. Stylish Design w/ Koken Name on Both Sections(need to be cleaned and and polished) Cool Vintage Leather Sharpening Strop- Reads: Broncho with a picture of a Cowboy on a Horse- not a vital part of the chair. These were considered the premiere barber chair of the day. This particularly interesting chair was named simply#40. It was made of oak and covered in velour plush fabric and fringed extensively. The back of the chair was enameled and then upholstered. Other sources suggest that there may have been varied uses for this chair which gave cause for different coverings. Cloth for hotel use or traveling summer barber. Leather or Canvas for soldiers use. One additional use of the chair was for dentistry. The unique design of this rare chair took up very little space and weighed less than 25lbs. Ideal for traveling. BUT THERE'S A REALLY INTERESTING STORY BEHIND THIS CHAIR. THE OLD MAN THAT HAD THIS WAS FUSSY. SOME WOULD SAY OVERLY PICKY. AS SOON AS THE BASE GOT A FEW CHIPS IN IT, HE GOT UPSET, AND HAD THE CHAIR PAINTED FROM THE BASE OF THE HORSE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE VERY BOTTOM TO PROTECT IT(INCLUDING ALL THE CHROME) HE APPARENTLY SPARED NO EXPENSE ON THE PAINT. BECAUSE THERE WAS AROUND 3 GALLONS OF IT SPREAD ON EVERYWHERE WITH A MOP BRUSH IN BRIGHT SILVER. THINGS WERE OK THEN. UNTIL THE HORSE GOT A LITTLE WEAR. AFTER THAT HE GOT REAL UPSET, PUT THE CHAIR UP, AND WOULDN'T LET ANYONE USE IT ANYMORE. IT FINALLY WENT TO THE KIDS, AND THEY SOLD ... moreIT TO ME. I FULLY DISMANTLED IT. AND CLEANED EVERY BIT OF THE PAINT OFF. WHAT YOU SEE NOW IS WHAT WAS UNDERNEATH. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. IT TOOK ME ABOUT A STRAIGHT WEEK. AND 10 ROLLS OF PAPER TOWELS TO GET ALL THE SILVER OFF EVERYTHING. I USED A PAINT STRIPPER TO REMOVE IT ALL. BUT HAD TO WORK VERY FAST, AND IN SMALL PATCHES TO GET TO THE SILVER, YET NOT DAMAGE THE ORIGINAL PAINT UNDERNEATH. I CLEANED. POLISHED, AND BUFFED OUT THE HORSE. THERE'S A COUPLE TOUCH UP SPOTS ON THE FEET. THEY LOOK GOOD. IT HAS A FEW KNICKS, AND A COUPLE SPOTS WHERE THE CLEAR COAT FLAKED OFF, BUT OVERALL LOOKS GREAT, AND IS VERY SHINY WITH RICH FULL GRAPHICS. THE CHAIR WORKS PERFECT, AND LIFTS, AND LOWERS AS IT SHOULD. THE BASE IS OFF WHITE, CREAMISH. IT HAS A FEW SMALL KNICKS, AND A FEW VERY SMALL DINGS IN THE LEG. I ASSUME FROM FEET MISSING THE PUMP LEVER. OTHER THAN THAT, IT'S PERFECT. I CLEANED, POLISHED, AND BUFFED IT ALL OUT. I POLISHED ALL THE ATTACHING BOLTS. THE STEP UP PLATE WAS COMPLETELY CLEANED. POLISHED, AND BUFFED OUT. THE ADHESIVE FOR THE RUBBER STEP UP PADS HAD ALL COME LOOSE, SO I USED A VERY THIN 2 SIDED CLEAR ADHESIVE TO RE-SECURE THEM BACK AFTERWARDS. I TOOK MEASURE
