Baker Furniture Company Armoire Wardrobe with Hand Painted Asian Scenes
Since 1903 the Baker Furniture Company has been producing high quality furniture in West Michigan. This is an exceptional example of their work. It is an armoire or wardrobe. It is all 1 solid piece. Behind the two doors on the top portion are 4 drawers and 2 shelves. They are a teal color. The bottom portion has 3 larger drawers. The front and both sides are decorated with beautiful hand painted Asian inspired scenes. There are also hand painted scrolls and flowers throughout the design. The corners and edges are adorned with gold accents. As I stated. This is all one piece. It measures 42" wide, 82" high and 20" deep. The top portion which is 43.5" tall, is slightly set back and only measures about 18" deep. It comes with the original hardware. Purchased new in the early 2000s, this piece is still manufactured today by Baker Furniture and retails for $45,845. I imagine a few people pay this retail price, but as an interior designer, the best sale price I can obtain on a new piece directly from Baker is still just over $25,000. Offered here as a"buy-it-now" at $15,000, this represents an amazing bargain, especially considering the piece is crafted in America and requires incredible hours of painstaking labor to accomplish the extensive interior fittings(pigeonholes, drawers, secret compartments, inlaid stringing) Notice pictures five and six demonstrate multiple document holders and secret hidden compartments. As a used piece. This secretary does have minor nicks and ... moredings, most noticeably around the bracket feet from occasional bumps with the vacuum cleaner over the years. Circa 1959- Superior Construction Mahogany- American Vintage Modern 68" wide. 19" deep and 32" high Superior construction. Exquisite detail and uncompromising form in a Credenza Sideboard assumed produced April 1959. We had an experienced wood worker look at this and he was fairly certain it was Mahogany. We have no firm attribution on this but have noted that Charak made sideboards using identical components that are featured on this. And even similar use of break fronts with lines for Tommi Parzinger. Drexel& Baker made styles like this. We have failed to ID it. The lengths that the maker went to on this sideboard is quite indicative of the best of the era and we have been unable to ascertain the maker. Piano hinges for the middle swing doors. Brass rods to prevent the doors from over-swing. Smoothest movement of the ... moremiddle drawer. Solid shelving and flawless drawer movement. Boasts 8 drawers and a large central area with sliding hidden drawer with extreme construction designed to take very large amounts of weight. All produced from solid wood. Note the use of banded wood on the top that travels around the breakfront. Based on the brass/bronze pulls used we are fairly certain this is the work of either Charak Modern or Baker Furniture however Dunbar and Johnsons furniture both produced similar sideboards with handle pulls that very closely resemble this one. 100% vintage condition with the mildest signs of use. RARE Primavera Dresser Tallboy Brown Saltman Baker Johnsons Furniture vintage
Rare& uncommon Primavera Circa 1940's 46" tall. 20" deep, 37" wide. Primavera is virtually unused in furniture these days because of it's rarity and expense. Of the hardest to manage is unstained Primavera(you will see Drexel Baughman Primavera which looks dark but it is actually stained) Referred to as white mahogany and prized. This dresser is exceptional and of the highest quality but has defied identification primarily because of the retailer. Woodrums of Charleston. WV was one of the top 3 retailers in the United States in it's hay day and was a prime importer of goods from Grand Rapids. As a major retailer(like John Stuart) it had the right to remove manufacturer labels and replace it with it's own- which it did on all pieces sold. Much like how Raymor also did not allow Botossi and other producers ... moreto maintain their labels for import. The quality of the piece is not in dispute and is rare. Robsjohn-Gibbings is also a possible maker of this item. Note the use of slanted and curved plinth base; the use of edging on the sides of the main body where the drawers slide to. The use of cornering and custom fitted brass and wedges for the drawers; the purposeful added line of wood between the top two and bottom drawers and the creation of every drawer being a different size. Only the best did this. Possibly this is a forerunner to the praised Edward Wormley for Drexel lines. Rago sold a dresser produced by Frank Lloyd Wright with the same style and pulls but also Robsjohn Gibbings designed a near identical model for Widdicomb. We have seen these club style slipper chairs attributed to Edward Wormley for Dunbar. However research shows that these chairs are likely the production of Baker Furniture.
