AAFA - Northeast Native American, Painted Gathering Basket, c. 1850-1860, N.R.
Up for sale without reserve is a beautiful Northeast Native American single-handle gathering basket from c. 1850-1860. The color is natural with red and green dyed or painted on one side alternating weft splints. It is an unusual oblong shape with a high handle and warm patina. The condition is excellent and solid with only minor corner breaks. And a small section of lashing that is missing. The overall height including handle is: 7-1/2" high, and the basket is 4" high. We are pleased to offer this wonderful example of blacksmith made American Folk Art. From its great patina, to the nice riveting. The profile as you can see is a running fox hound. Excellent attention to detail. The original maker wrought this piece with various pieces of metal, not sparing and details of the hound, including a punched out eye form, and even the tip of the dogs tongue. Great support bars and riveting to the body of the piece. Again. The enlargements help ... moreto showcase the original construction. Has multiple layers of paint present. The piece looks to have been originally a red with possibly some yellow areas(perhaps the remains of old lettering from the estate in which it was used) And later a darker brown. From exposure to the elements the paint has chipped in areas leaving a great patina, and truly wonderful old folk art character. Some slight areas of pitting from age. Weathering to the paint, but all in all a very good example of period folk art, and one that's sure to make a commanding presentation in any collection or decorum. This unique piece of maritime folk art is one of a kind. It is a oil painting of the ship Thomas W. Lawson inside of a large clam shell. There is a vast amount of information on the internet regarding the Larson. Including the following: The Thomas W. Lawson was a seven-masted. Steel-hulled schooner originally planned for the Pacific trade, but then used primarily to haul coal and oil along the East Coast of the United States. Built in 1902, the ship holds the distinction of being the largest schooner and the largest pure sailing vessel(without an auxiliary engine) ever built. Designed by naval architect Bowdoin B. Crowninshield(famous for his fast yachts) for Captain John G. Crowley of the Coastwise Transportation Company of Boston at the approximately $250,000. The Thomas W. This week I'm listing part of my collection of antique/vintage Black Americana folk art Mammy dolls. This one is designed as a toaster cover. With a fabric-covered cardboard rectangle attached to the torso beneath the skirt& no legs. She's wearing a black checked gingham ensemble, dress& bandanna, with a full nylon apron that has stains& tearing on one side. The bandanna is safety-pinned at the top. Rare Antique 19th Century Christian and Heathen Pictorial Woven Coverlet AAFA
15.00 Offered here is this spectacular 1830 to 1850 woven jacquard coverlet in the Christian and Heathen Pattern. They called this pattern Christian Heathen because of the Boston style houses mixed with the oriental buildings. This is an especially desirable example of this rare pattern due to the combination of the birds feeding their young. Along with the Boston Town borders. The coverlet is two panels, joined by a center seam. The main body of the coverlet is birds of paradise feeding their young upon a nest, alternating with urns filled with Pineapple and florals. Two Borders are Boston Town, while the other two are floral. Three edges are fringed. Overall the coverlet is in very good antique condition with minor indiscretions consistent with the age of the piece, such as very minor discoloration and a few shallow moth bites. AMAZING RARE Antique Salesman Sample Chest of Drawers AAFA Old Furniture BEST
I don't usually list that many items on Ebay in the summer because it's too busy. But. When I find stuff that I know the Ebay community will go wild for, I list it. And I have 4 such lots up right now so be sure to check them out for some great American folk art pieces. This auction is for a stunning antique salesman sample chest of drawers. It's got just about everything going for it in both a folky and country way. Definitely one of the best of I've seen or had the pleasure to sell. It measures approx. 9" tall to the chest top. With the addition of a 2" splashboard. Approx. 10" wide and 6" deep. FRESH, FRESH, FRESH from a Northern NH estate and quite likely NH made. The cut out base is just awesome! Country elegance with folky charm. 3 drawers, with the top 2 being slightly graduated in size over the ... morebottom drawer. Original finish and just the way you'd like to find a piece like this. And the drawer pulls are incredible! Definitely original to the piece. Definitely brass hardware with what I think is inset sculpted and painted tin encased in a clear cover. Not quite sure if the cover over the insets is a thin piece of glass or not. Nice square-head nails all around, including the drawer sides. The splashboard is definitely original to the piece, but it has been reattached at some point as evident by different nails(not recently though) Wonderful early backboard, although I do believe there are a couple backboard pieces missing. Don't believe it's been cut down at all because the height of the feet is proportionate to the height of the cut outs on the base. There are 2 early screws on the backside of the front cut out and a couple small cracks. This is not visible when the piece is sitting and not certain whether the cracks and screws occured during making or after. Piece is solid as ever, great patina, just the right amount of dust on the edge of the inset panels on each side, stunning! With a smattering of silk and wool employed. The colors are so warm and rich in much sought after favorites of brown’s blues and red and more. It has 2 wide parts towards one end; they measure 3 1/4" in diameter. I don't know what this item was used for-my best guess is that it was used for some kind of yarn/wool spinning but I'm not sure on that. Anyway, this item is all wood; the two wider pieces are on one half and the other half ends in a long, narrow rod. Up for sale without reserve is a great looking miniature red ware still bank jug. It has a single solid handle and a slot for coins. And dates from either the late 19th c. or early 20th c. It is nicely painted an ochre color and one side has a decorative branch, leaves and flowers. The condition is excellent and solid, with no hairlines, cracks or repairs. I am selling without reserve a rare FAMILY RECORD needlework sampler from 1809. Found in Redding. CT over 40 years ago, it lists the birth dates of eleven members of the Small and Patch families. The earliest stitched date is 1769 to the latest date 1809. The 4 lines at the bottom read: When memory oer this scene shall wake- And retrospective pleasures take- How shall I wish in vain- To enjoy youths careless hours again. This verse. From 1806, is listed in: American Samplers by Ethel Stanwood Botton and Eva Johnston Coe, The Pine Press, Princeton, 1973. The condition is very good, but there is thread loss in the center probably from being folded at one time. The stitching is pale and dark green on what appears to be natural cotton or linen. This auction is for an Original Vintage AAFA Antique Wood Dough Bowl measuring 14 1/2" across in one direction and 14" across in the other direction and stands 3 1/2" on one side and 4" on the other. The lip is 1 1/4" wide. As you can see in the photos, there are several cracks and a repair on the outside rim. I do not know the age, there is a lot of original use marks and cracks in the wood.
